Wasserman-Schultz Democrat IT Scandal

PittsburghTiger

Recommended Posts

A secret memo marked “URGENT” detailed how the House Democratic Caucus’s server went “missing” soon after it became evidence in a cybersecurity probe. The secret memo also said more than “40 House offices may have been victims of IT security violations.”

In the memo, Congress’s top law enforcement official, Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving, along with Chief Administrative Officer Phil Kiko, wrote, “We have concluded that the employees [Democratic systems administrator Imran Awan and his family] are an ongoing and serious risk to the House of Representatives, possibly threatening the integrity of our information systems and thereby members’ capacity to serve constituents.”

The memo, addressed to the Committee on House Administration (CHA) and dated Feb. 3, 2017, was recently reviewed and transcribed by The Daily Caller News Foundation. The letter bolsters TheDCNF’s previous reporting about the missing server and evidence of fraud on Capitol Hill.

It details how the caucus server, run by then-caucus Chairman Rep. Xavier Becerra, was secretly copied by authorities after the House Inspector General (IG) identified suspicious activity on it, but the Awans’ physical access was not blocked.

Multiple sources connected to the investigation told TheDCNF that shortly after an IG report came out identifying the House Democratic Caucus server as key evidence in a criminal probe, the evidence was stolen.

It seems like evidence shouldn't be stolen, or go missing, right? If you are cool with that just say so.

“These employees accessed user accounts and computers for offices that did not employ them, without the knowledge and permission of the impacted Member’s office,” it said, adding, “4 of the employees accessed the Democratic Caucus computers 5,735 times.” More than 100 office computers were open to access from people not on the office’s staff, it said.

Chris Gowen — a former aide to Hillary Clinton who is now serving as Imran’s attorney — told TheDCNF, “There is no missing server and never was.”

He didn’t provide any support for his claim, which is contrary to evidence Kiko and Irving presented to Congress.

If there's actually anything to this, the scandal is the Trump Justice Department doing nothing about it.  Until they do, I'm going to assume this is just more bullshit for the base to scream about.

Or the Obama justice dept. doing nothing about Hillary. See how that works ?

No, but the Trump DOJ not charging Hillary is another great example, so thanks!   It's just like how it's clear now that there wasn't enough evidence to charge Hillary, because even the Trump DOJ with every incentive to charge her is not doing so.   Same here, so far.

My favorite part in this whole story is that the Sergeant of Arms is leading the investigation.  He's the guy who announces "The President of the United States".  Apparently the FBI was too busy.

But I did learn this about the position:

  Quote

For daily sessions of the House, the Sergeant at Arms carries the silver and ebony Mace of the United States House of Representatives in front of the speaker in procession to the rostrum. When the House is in session, the mace stands on a pedestal to the speaker's own right. When the body resolves itself into a Committee of the Whole House on the State of the Union, the Sergeant at Arms moves the mace to a lowered position, more or less out of sight. In accordance with the Rules of the House, on the rare occasions when a Member becomes unruly, the Sergeant at Arms, on order of the Speaker, lifts the mace from its pedestal and presents it before the offenders, thereby restoring order.

I wonder if there was any other news about this topic that came out in the last hour or so......

  Quote

Federal prosecutors concluded an 18-month investigation into a former congressional technology staffer on Tuesday by publicly debunking allegations — promoted by conservative media and President Trump — suggesting he was a Pakistani operative who stole government secrets with cover from House Democrats.

As part of an agreement with prosecutors, Imran Awan pleaded guilty to a relatively minor offense unrelated to his work on Capitol Hill: making a false statement on a bank loan application. U.S. prosecutors said they would not recommend jail time.

But the agreement included an unusual passage that described the scope of the investigation and cleared Awan of a litany of conspiracy theories promulgated on Internet blogs, picked up by right-leaning news sites, and fanned by President Trump on Twitter.

"The Government has uncovered no evidence that your client violated federal law with respect to the House computer systems," including stealing equipment or illegally accessing or transferring information, prosecutors wrote in the plea agreement dated and signed Tuesday.

Federal prosecutors described in the agreement a "thorough investigation" that included forensic analysis of computer equipment and other devices, log-on and usage data and interviews with about 40 witnesses.

Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney's Office of the District of Columbia did not mention Trump or any media publications by name in the agreement.

But the agreement included an exhaustive list of "public allegations" that prosecutors investigated and shot down.

"Particularly, the Government has found no evidence that your client illegally removed House data from the House network or from House Members' offices, stole the House Democratic Caucus Server, stole or destroyed House information technology equipment, or improperly accessed or transferred government information, including classified or sensitive information."

The office that conducted the investigation is led by Trump-nominated U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu. Awan was released from electronic monitoring and will be free pending his sentencing Aug. 21 U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan ordered in the Tuesday hearing.

People can feel shame about the kind of car they drive, the neighborhood they live in, even the clothes they wear.

But people never feel shame about the types of news websites they visit.

It's too bad. Because, Daily Caller....LOL

More specifically, the Govrnment agrees that the public allegations that your client stole U.S. House of Representatives ("House") equipment and engaged in unauthorized or illegal conduct involving House computer systems do not form the basis of any conduct relevant to the determination of the sentence in this case. The Government conducted a thorough investigation of those allegations, including interviewing approximately 40 witnesses; taking custody of the House Democratic Caucus server, along with other computers, hard drives, and electronic devices; examining those devices, including inspecting their physical condition and analyzing log-in and usage data; reviewing electronic communications between pertinent House employees; consulting with the House Office of General Counsel and House information technology personnel to access and/or collect evidence; and questioning your client during numerous voluntary interviews. The Government has uncovered no evidence that your client violated federal law with respect to the House computer systems. Particularly, the Government has found no evidence that your client illegally removed House data from the House network or from House Members' offices, stole the House Democratic Caucus Server, stole or destroyed House information technology equipment, or improperly accessed or transferred govrnment information, including clas sif,red or sensitive information.

Watching these guys utterly pants themselves....well, it doesn't get old.

Oh, and Wasserman is loathsome.  If you want to start a thread on how much she sucks, go for it, I'll likely agree.  But on this particular topic...yeah, the chuckles are appreciated.

The funny thing is, I bet Luke Rosiak knew full well that the government was about to make an announcement.  He still needed to get the story out there for the clicks.  He knows it won't matter to his readers.  And, sure enough, Pittsburgh will continue to give them clicks, either for this story or the next "scandal" they have the scoop on.

I think you misread that. The "urgent" memo from the Sergeant-at-Arms said that the House Democratic Caucus' server went missing shortly after the investigation began.

Turns out the prosecutors had taken it into their custody.
