A Nation built on Immigration

My grandfather was an immigrant from Russia who came to the U.S. and was a garbageman in Milwaukee his whole adult life.  He built America.

Seems to me like he dumped America in a hole and covered it with dirt.

My great-grandmother was born to peasant pig farmers in Eastern Europe.  At 8 years old, she came to America on a boat.  Her family lived in an immigrant neighborhood the townsfolk affectionately dubbed “Shit Town.”  American families looked down on them.  Some didn’t want them here.  She did her best to fit in and profess her patriotism, to the point of overcompensation.

Her sons were star college and pro athletes.  They went on to run small businesses and build respected careers in public education.  At least one served during WWII.  Her grandkids include CEOs, engineers, and scientists.  Her great-grandkids include lawyers, doctors, nurses, and businessmen.

One of those great-grandkids just posted some anti-immigrant shit to Facebook, apparently forgetting that if not for America’s openness to immigration, he’d be slogging through pig shit in Poland today.

God bless the USA.

Mom's side- Grandmother's side got out of shitty Scotland very early in our nation's history. Grandfather had to run away from the British blokes after the Easter rebellion. Dad's side, no idea, just know they were vikings.

And let us remember these dudes.

I’ve yet to hear anyone argue against immigration. The argument is that immigration should be done legally and judiciously. You make up the rest to be outraged. Congrats and Happy Birthday USA!

Legal immigration is a good thing.

Without borders, our independence won't mean much.  A shit-ton of folks would love that premise.

Republicans in Congress disagree. So does Donald Trump.

Trump knows his base can be easily riled over brown people. They took 'er jobs. Cheapest solution would be to go after businesses that hire illegal immigrants but America is really not interested in actual problem solving. Fear/emotion control the conversation.

Somebody should coin the term, "We are a Nation of Immigrants"  I've never heard a politician use it one way or another, so somebody should jump on that.

My dad's grandparents came from Germany and Austria and hauled pianos for a living using horse-drawn carriages in the Chicago area (very niche industry at the time, and very white).

My mother's parents came from Iberia (still not known where in Portugal/Spain he was from), and her mother came from Mexico.

Bragging about being a native born U.S. Citizen always seemed like a curious thing to take credit for to me.  I'm glad I was born here, but I didn't really have much to do with it.

Also, the folks who continually talk about no more nations without borders . . . it's almost like they can see the future. Nation states are not always going to be a thing. National borders are already virtually non-existent for the rich.

The only "legal immigrants" here are the Native Americans who were subsequently slaughtered en masse

Their slaughtering is a crime against humanity we will never be washed clean of.  But there is no such thing as Native Americans.  They were certainly here before Europeans, but they didn't spontaneously appear between the Bering Strait and the Embera once upon a time.  They moved here, same as Europeans did.  And I suspect they laid waste when they did.

Meh, this is about par for the course for this sociopathic shitheap of a "Leader."  He's actually been looking outward for enemies again lately, only a matter of time before he turned back inward to find more U.S. citizens to fuck with.  I just can't figure out if this is coming from a place of low self-esteem because of his small cock or from his over-sized ego.

Do you really want an answer on this? Because you know what kind of answers you are going to get.

It’s not like we didn’t give them a bunch a shit to make up for that.  Land, reservations. And now they got the casinos.

What the fuck we ever get we didn't have to work for? I wouldn't mind sitting around all day smoking mushrooms and collecting government checks.

Dude...I don’t even know where to start with that comment. Impressive.

My father immigrated from Latin America in the late 60s. Got an engineering degree from Texas. My mom came from the south side of San Antonio. Working class Scots Irish. That side got to Texas in 1835.

This is probably a topic for a different thread but I've been saying this for years. I do see the nation state borders dissolving as global commerce and technology will eventually win the fight against nationalism. I work in the tech industry so I might be exposed to globalization more than most people but when you work in virtual offices with people from all over the world, your perspective on things change a lot.

Anyways, as you said, this is the future.

Yep. Like it or not, it’s coming. The first waves of it already exist - like you observed, plenty of industry and jobs flow across borders with zero effort. It’s still a small percentage of things, but it’s going to grow, not shrink.

Y'all are way fucking wrong.

The SEC ain't dissolving anytime soon, nor will La Tech or Troy be joining their unholy union.

The US of A politicians ain't relinquishing their money/power/influence anytime soon either.

If nobody else was here, there are no natives to this place.  No indigenous people.  Only "boat people" and "bridge people"

The problem I see is government.  For better or worse, we let government take an increasing role in our lives.  Government is, by its very nature territorial.  It also gets less efficient and effective and perceived as more necessary as population increases.

Open borders is an interesting idea, but a whole shitload of stuff is going to have to change before it makes any sense.

Or we could get into eschatology.

Other than the fact the whole process is a cluster fuck. If it was judicious and reasonable more people may take that step. I have two employees on work visas that are nearing the end of their consecutive 3 year visas. They are both looking at having to go home even though they have masters degrees and work in a professional field because the green card process is shit at the moment.

The process is shitty. Does that make it okay to break the law when there are tons of people doing it the right way?

I believe the current state of the world is pushback against the path towards globalization. The rise of nationalism and the balkanization of the internet are just speed bumps, in my opinion. Information and money can only be held back for so long. The world will be wealthier and more peaceful as our economies become more interlocked. we just need more freedom of movement, labor, capital, goods and services. I think we will eventually see more freedom of these things because they are so critical to the creation of wealth.

That's not really what's going on.   Trump is doing everything he can to alienate our traditional trading partners and cozy up to Russia.  Between Brexit and what happened today in German (changes to their immigration policy) the right wing is gaining power.  Or are you seeing something else?

As I said, these are speed bumps that will eventually be overcome. Resistance to change is to be expected but no one has ever been able to stop change.
