4th & 5 poor frosted tucker

Ricky savages aggy to break Dorsett's record (my final home game as a student)

VY to Sweed at the shoe at night (my 28th bday and we crashed the game day set after the game and my cellphone subsequently blew up with texts/calls)

Roll left (freshman year at UT)

Victory formation up 10 at BDS

Observations: I'm obviously too heavily biased to student memories and 2005 but IDGAF ;-)

Run Ricky Run vs aggy - Ricky's recruitment is where my Longhorn fandom began and I had moved to Austin the year before.  Loudest and longest cheer I've ever heard in DKR.

VY in the Rose Bowl - the Longhorn Messiah delivers Glory unto his long suffering people.

Roll Left - knocking off the Nebraska dynasty in the most epic of upsets was so unreal.  Literal fever dream.  Bonus that it started the run vs Corn that ended w/ them running away to the B1G.

Shipley's return in 2008 - Spent the night before in the drunk tank and it was a challenge getting to the 11am game.  Walked in and got to my seats probably 5 minutes before that happened.

2004 OKST - Never been around a comeback like that.  Was in the TD Club (??  2nd tier donor club that was a tent below the LBJ Fountain)  for beers at halftime and discussing not going back inside, which I don't think I've ever done at any game in my life.  So glad we went back in.

HonMen: 98 Cotton Bowl - GF got me tix for Xmas, 2nd row in the end zone where Ricky threw the Heisman pose, and literally every other big play in that game happened.  Was on the aisle across from the MSU fan section and all their cowbells, and I talked plenty of shit about how quiet they were after the 1Q.

Might add Earl Campbell's end of game, 80-yd end run against the Miami Dolphins on Mon Night Football. Howard Cosell and Dandy Don going apeshit.

Don't remember the exact game or year, I was a broke-ass student sharing a duplex off Red River with 4 to 10 people depending on weather patterns.

Woke up game day and saw people trying to park. Scratched out a crude "Parking" sign and proceeded to funnel cars into our common area driveway. Acquired dog-choking wad of cash. Kept it all because the other hippies didn't wake up.

Shuffled down to stadium and bought scalped ticket for peanuts, enjoyed game.

No doubt ended up at the Crown and Anchor or a random party, and blotted further memories.

Honorable mention...  Oct. 8, 1977 Red River Rivalry.

Unlikely Hero: Randy McEachern

He was an unlikely hero for the University of Texas and it all began Oct. 8, 1977 in the Red River Rivalry.

———

When Texas backup quarterback John Aune tore ligaments in his knee on UT’s fourth series of the Red River Shootout, as it was called at the time, the TV announcers scrambled to figure out who would be next to lead the Longhorns.

Starter Mark McBath broke his ankle on the third series and Aune lasted just nine plays before he went down. The trio in the booth had no quarterbacks left on their rosters.

The play-by-play man quickly threw the question to sports director Steve Ross of KVUE, channel 24 in Austin. “Steve, who would that bring in? We don’t even have him on the depth chart.”

Ross speculated about a pair of freshmen, but he really had no idea. Everyone was surprised when No. 6 trotted onto the field.

Redshirt junior Randy McEachern entered the game in a situation that was becoming more desperate by the minute, and it was still only the first quarter. He had been an afterthought for two seasons and had only handed the ball off during mop-up time of three games in 1977.

The announcers knew so little about him that Ross actually called him a freshman on the broadcast before finding the correct information.

The story goes that it was Earl Campbell who broke away from the huddle to give McEachern a vote of confidence as he ran onto the field in Dallas. Campbell did take a step or two away from the team and clapped twice, but it was offensive lineman George James who jogged out to meet McEachern.

Campbell did give the wide-eyed quarterback a pep talk when he reached the huddle, in his own way.

“He said, ‘Let’s go, little man,” McEachern recalled for Texassports.com in 2007.

Though they stood the same height, 5-foot-11, Campbell outweighed McEatchern by 60 pounds. But size didn’t matter. They would become a good pair.

Both teams were unbeaten that year and riding high coming into the showdown. No. 2 Oklahoma had survived a massive game in Columbus two weeks earlier when Barry Switzer’s Sooners upset Woody Hayes’ Buckeyes 29-28 on a last-second field goal.

OU had been No. 5 at the time and OSU had been No. 4. The Sooners moved up to No. 3 after the win and then took over No. 1 after beating Kansas the next week.

Texas had crushed Boston College, Virginia and Rice to open the season and had climbed steadily in the ranks until it reached No. 5 at the time of the rivalry matchup.

Darrell Royal was not at the helm of the Longhorns for the first time in 20 years. He retired as the coach and became the full-time athletic director after the 1976 season.

Royal’s offensive coordinator Fred Akers ascended to head coach and was about to get his first real test as chief decision maker.

Texas won 13-6, and solidified Earl Campbell as the front runner for the Heisman Trophy.

The defense stopping Lindale White was my favorite memory of the NC game.  The whole outcome of the game was in in question right then and there.  But as soon as we stopped them you knew we were gonna win. The whole damn stadium knew it.

Ewers to Golden on 4th and 13 in overtime is now on my personal list.

For non-football memories, this one is always near the top for me:

Most all of these. I’ll add Jamal Charles running for 200 yards in th 4th against Corn.

also Garret Gilbert on one of the worst Longhorn teams in life beating corn as well

In attendance:

1970 UCLA - Cotton Speyrer TD catch with ~17 sec left to preserve the win streak that ultimately went 30 games.  My Dad was ready to throw in the towel and leave, but my brother and I said no way.  Met up with a friend at school on Monday who had been at the game and he said they heard the roar of the crowd from outside, big mistake!

All my others have been mentioned many times.

Beating OU 49-0 a few years back was basically a 3-hour orgasm.  The 2005 NC is above it obviously but I'll remember it forever, that washed away so many bad feelings of OU blowouts.  And the weather was as perfect as can be for that game - the perfect day.

I heart this thread.  Attended a shit ton of these games.  Brings back great memories.

Darkhorse for me: 1990 Red River Shootout.  Texas 14, blowu 13.  It was the 1st one I ever attended.  Sneaky Pete Gardere found Keith Cash for the go ahead TD with 2 minutes to go.  R.D. Lashar (dumbass permed mullet MFer) had a game-winning FG lined up and hooked it as time expired.  I was covered in a bourbon and coke shower.  A blowu grandma shot me the bird.  It was glorious!

Had to back in '99 at the Alamo Dome.  I'll never forget,  I am in line surrounded by Nebraska fans. They are taunting me. I am taunting back, still certain that we are going to kick the st out of Nebraska. I decide to challenge a particularly vocal Nebraska fan to play what I now call and will forever be remembered as "Cell-Phone Flop Out." Remember flop out for a dollar? The rules are similar. I tell this Nebraska jacs that if he's so confident in his team, he should "flop out" his cell phone RIGHT NOW and make plane reservations to Phoenix for the Fiesta Bowl. And then I spoke these memorable words: "And not those dang refundable tickets, either! You request those non-refundable, non-transferrable sons-of-bitches!" He backs down. He is unworthy. I call Southwest Airlines and buy two tickets to Phoenix, non-refundable and non-transferrable. Price: $712. He is humbled. He lowers his head in shame. I raise my cell phone in triumph to the cheers of hundreds of Texas fans. I am KING and these are my subjects. I distribute the 11 beers in my pants to the cheering masses. I RULE the pre game kingdom.

Good times.....

True, but does not capture the level of annihilation.

Boston College 44-0

Virginia 68-0

Rice 72-15

-- Texas led Rice 54-0 before the Owls scored the first TD of the season against Texas.

So Texas scored 166 STRAIGHT POINTS.

-- That will never be achieved again by Texas ... at any time in a season.

-- Could be an all-time record ever in college?

The 1916 Cumberland vs. Georgia Tech football game was played on October 7, 1916, between the Cumberland College Bulldogs and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on the Yellow Jackets' home field of Grant Field in Atlanta. Georgia Tech defeated the Bulldogs 222–0 for the most lopsided score in the history of college football.[1][2]
