Kid got into both Purdue and cu Boulder aerospace this week. Nice to have options while he’s waiting on TX to get their act together after deferring 95%. Hearing from Michigan Friday. He’s lucky to have some nice options.

Heard from CU Boulder early. Junior Brown was admitted to the engineering school but no word on any merit scholarship. So, she went 13/13 and got merit aid at 12/13.

Same here - she got into CU but no word on merit.

We clicked on a link to see some merit. Not huge but at least something. Pricetag there is nuts.

First, congrats!  I went through this last year with my first kid, and regardless of the ultimate destination, it's fun seeing all the options rolling out for your children.

Second, one of my best friend's daughter is a sophomore at CU.  She absolutely loves it.  But she got a pittance of merit aid.  And, she's in an apartment this year, and I forgot the monthly nut, but it's incredible, even split three ways with roommates, but I guess not surprising given what I've read of the housing costs in Boulder.  So factor that into the budget if your kids go there.

Yeah it’s fun but stressful. I’m on my 3rd (and last) kid! I believe it all works out in the end for most and kids can be happy in lots of different places. Go somewhere you WANT to be and not where you think you SHOULD.

One went to Georgetown and other is currently on the 40 acres and both loved their choices.

Hardest part is forcing yourself to get out and meet people in those first few weeks and months. Sets the tone for your social life in my experience with my first 2.

Good luck all. Fall move ins are just around the corner! Fun stuff.

Actually CU is great for aerospace engineering.  My cousin did his MS & PhD there and has crushed it at Lockheed-Martin.  Senior Fellow & Chief Engineer, pretty much top of the tech track.

Yeah he’s leaning there right now pending Texas.

This feels like a bit of a scam at this point. I wonder if all of them are trying to push as late as possible to force kids to commit and not be subject to the waterfall effect of holding spots as a backup/safety.

Had a great engineering alumni lunch on Saturday and posted this message ...

Another great alumni lunch today. If a bigger school denied you entry into their engineering college, please reach out to me. There are many options out there past am and ut. An engineering degree is for life !

just thought I'd pass along the message here. lots of great people here, with smart kids

An engineer from any accredited program and a years or two experience is valuable to many many companies. i'm talking about upstream and downstream businesses

I gave up any dream of either of my kids attending UT a long time ago.  The admissions standards are one thing, where even for a lot of smart in-state kids UT is becoming a "reach" school.  But my kids were born and have grown up about 15 minutes from campus, and I think a huge part of the college experience is getting some distance and independence from your parents.

I think my daughter probably had a decent shot of getting admitted based on numbers alone and her likely major, but she didn't want to apply to a single school in Texas, and that really opened up my eyes to the possibilities of great schools and exciting college experiences far away from her dad.

So tx 3 putt's message is a good one, whether for aspiring engineers or any other major.

when i was in college / back in my day !!!!

ut and am were easily the two giants for engineering in Texas. well everything has grown by leaps snd bounds. the need for all college grads remain high. when looking at smaller programs look at retention rate and hiring rate / where their last couple of graduating classes ended up.

my first job out of college, it was me, a ut grad and an ou grad on our first day

UGA hilariously waitlisted my daughter after being deferred. Laugh out loud. Fuck you.

She has decided on Tennessee which was secretly my non-UTex choice for her. Walking around there during visits it reminded me of UT back in the day.

Go Vols!

I wonder if Georgia is going down the Texas path of selectivity, in that because of the Hope Scholarship and basically making UGA free for Georgia kids, there are less spots for out of state kids.

UGA is already way down that path. Their out of state acceptance rate has been super low and keeps going lower each class. Honors college acceptance for out of state is even worse. Most of my daughter’s friends are Atlanta kids that are going for free. It drives her nuts when they talk about it because most didn’t want to go there and are going for free while we tote most of the cost of her going.

Definitely. A few of my UGA daughter's HS senior friends got rejected after deferral, and at least two of them were auto-admit to Texas. I guess their essays or test scores knocked them out? FWIW, a college admissions account I still follow on social media says the problem is that everyone (exaggeration, I know) wants to go to the same 10 schools, so as that trend continues, it's just going to get harder.

A frustrating aspect of going to UGA from out-of-state is that you register for classes after the in-state kids register. So yes, not only are we paying tuition when they are going for free, but the non-Georgia residents are getting the leftover course choices too. It hasn't been a big problem yet, but my TEX emotional scars have me a little concerned when she gets to needing those upper level required classes. It's total bullshit.

Isn't that directly within the purview of these state schools, to support in-state kids over all others?

Yes, they are one of the few state schools we looked at that go as far as they do to protect in-state candidates. They also make it incredibly difficult to convert to residency status once you are there. We’re buying a house, moving her residency, moving her to claiming herself, etc and it’s still a crap shoot whether they will change her undergrad status. It should make a difference for law school though so at least there may be some benefit.

Son's a freshman at AR and while they do have reciprocity for Texas kids, he's in ROTC and joining the Guard which will cover most everything else minus a few things.  Not suggesting going that route, but there are options.

Junior Brown picked Colorado State, which is where she's wanted to go since her sophomore year.  I will say, I was pretty impressed with the insane amount of support the engineering department provides students.  We will probably buy a second home in Fort Collins next summer, so that will save some living expenses in the future.

Overall, she went 13 for 13 acceptances and received the max, or near the max, merit scholarship at every school except for CU Boulder, which gave nothing.

One school that was very affordable was Washington State. Their out of state tuition was the cheapest of every school and with the merit aid, it was actually cheaper than the Arkansas or New Mexico in-state rate she was offered.

Her acceptance list:

  • Colorado State
  • Colorado School of Mines
  • Colorado
  • Northeastern
  • UMass
  • Bucknell
  • Penn State
  • Vermont
  • Washington State
  • Oregon State
  • Maine
  • Arkansas
  • New Mexico

Congrats!  One of our friends' daughters has Colorado State very high on her list.  Fort Collins seems like a fantastic town for the college years.

I love Boulder but Ft Collins is missing that snooty atmosphere that many of the residents of Boulder have, not to mention the insane housing prices in Boulder.

Boulder is okay but fuck the traffic is horrific for that size of town.

Fort Collins has an Austin circa '90 vibe.  A friend just accepted a job there and will be moving this summer.  We plan on moving full time in 6 years when my youngest graduates and my wife can retire from the state.  We have 3 other friends that plan on moving there also.

I've been to both towns a few times, and I just have way more fun in Fort Collins.

My wife and I went out in Boulder on a Saturday night with school in session back in 2019 or so and we were the youngest people everywhere we went.  We were like 34 at the time.

Boudler feels more like a place for old wealthy retirees, and Fort Collins feels like an actual college town.  Although the view in Boulder is definitely better.
