Maybe we need an Argentina thread too

Perhaps this an “accelerationist” approach to government? Burn it down with a maniac and pray the rebuild is more egalitarian? I dunno, we live in the dumbest of times.

The hell of it is, if there's someplace in the world that would work....Argentina might be it.  Governmentally, he's only going to be setting fire to something that's already rubble.  Put another way: it's going to be hard to govern Argentina MORE shittily.

How does a developing economy like Argentina handle inflation that is always high including over 100% this year? From my understanding, many average workers either immediately spend each paycheck, or they legally and illegally convert it to USD. Do workers receive monthly raises to keep up with inflation?  An employer can't expect workers to keep showing up on Monday morning if they're effectively earning 10% less than last month. And so on.

Heard a blurb on the election on NPR...  They had a reporter in country that was talking to voters.   Turns out the choice voters faced was to elect the economics minister from the status quo party (The status quo really sucks evidently) or some whack job.  The people she spoke with know he's a whack job but at this point they are ready to roll the dice because the idea of chaos was more attractive than reality on the ground.  This was not people choosing Libertarian ideals, he was literally the only other option.

tl/dr shit sucks, why not do something drastic and stupid

This.  Argentina was genuinely faced with a legit question of "how could it get any worse?"  Sadly, they may find out, but truly.....things are so shitty that it will be hard to tell.  Likewise, they're so shitty that even if there are minor improvements....it will be hard to tell.  If the inflation rate goes from 140% to 100%, that's a big improvement.....but you're still fucked.  It's like being on a plane in an 90 degree dive and pulling it up to a 70 degree dive.  Cool, cool...you're still gonna crash and die.

I think this was a stupid choice for Argentina.  But because things are as shitty as they are and have been for some time, I also can't blame them for taking the "we'll try something, ANYTHING, so long as it's different" route.

He's like a libertarian version of James Trafficant, and these are people in the desert who are extremely dehydrated, and they are about to drink from a fire house.

Did we get to the part where his dog Conan is a reincarnation of a Lion this jackass fought when he was a gladiator in the Roman Empire?  Cause that is a lot to unpack.

I remember that. It was always tedious going up against those South American gladiators because you could barely touch them and they'd flop on the ground and scream like they were dying.

Oh, yeah, his "platform" was ripped right out of the campaign for 3rd grade class president: "every class period will be recess, and pizza and ice cream for lunch every day!"  But then, when you've been served shit sandwiches for lunch every day for the past 15 years, why NOT vote for that guy?  What's the worst that can happen -- you keep eating shit sandwiches like you have every day for over a decade?  Okay, so....status quo.

Ok but this is like football at A&M.  A new coach comes in with plans to blow it all up and start over.  The problem...  Aggies are delusional and don't realize that the problem is....   them.   A new coach doesn't solve the problem.  The issues are systemic and can't be fixed without shedding emotional baggage that is their identity and they are not capable of doing it.

I mean....it's like you've actually been to Argentina.

Your analogy falls apart when you compare the female populations, though.

You'd think they'd just get lucky one time but no, they miss the beat every single time.  Amazing really.

Will this guy make it cheaper or more expensive to go dove hunting in Argentina?

They should send troops. The uk is so broke / pussiified, they wont respond

eh, not so sure. England is in a weird place headspace right now. Scotland is trying to leave the UK and was supposed to have a referendum last month about it, but the Surpreme Court of the UK said Scottish Parliament can't call a referendum for independence. So they are currently working at setting one up through the UK Parliament, much to the chagrin of the English across the major parties.
Meanwhile, the Scottish government put out a report last Friday laying out their desire to rejoin the EU as an independent nation. Of course, about 60% of all citizens of the UK would like to rejoin and regret Brexit because it's killing them, but they don't really want back in so much as they want the upside of membership (trade and convenience) without any downsides, and any rate the politics are a nightmare and Scotland wants to go even if the Brits rejoined.
And that's just Scotland. The UK has a whole host of other issues and while many are linked to Brexit and the EU, many are not. They are riven by dissent, barely holding reactionary populism at bay and that's compounded by an intractable cost of living crisis, and still working through a post-empire identity crisis that goes back decades.

So, all that to say, the Brits are pretty down right now, angry at each other and casting about for what to do about it. A territorial dispute with Argentina would be awfully hard to resist.

Reclaiming las Malvinas polls very very high in Argentina

maybe but dead kids + humiliation is usually a loser. My point is that if Milei is just making noise, everything will be OK. But if he thinks that British malaise or restraint will allow him to actually impose Argentine dominion over the Falklands outside of a popular referendum on the islands themselves to surrender their status as a British Overseas Territory, he's going to be in for the shock of his short career.
