Does Pelosi serve as speaker of the House again if the Dems take back the House ?

Yes, and there is a chance she could serve as President if the Russian stuff ends up being so bad that you can't reward Pence.

Which brings up an interesting Constitutional issue: The Speaker would be allowing the impeachment process to move forward when it may ultimately make the Speaker the President. I'm not sure I like that for either party. Of course, there is no Constitutional requirement that the Speaker be a member, so theoretically, the House could elect anyone as Speaker right before the impeachment of Trump and Pence, make them President, and then go right back to Pelosi or whoever.  All that said, I'm sure before it happens the Repubs would jettison Pence and have Trump appoint a new untarnished VP on the way out.

It could get interesting.

Technically, Hillary could still be president before 2020.

I think the real constitutional question is the fact that the Presidential Succession Act may be unconstitutional.  The Constitution grants Congress the authority to "by Law provide for the Case of Removal, Death, Resignation or Inability, both of the President and Vice President, declaring what Officer shall then act as President . . . ."  U.S. Const. Art. II, sec. 1, cl. 6.

"Officers" are people who are appointed by the President.  Id. at Art. II, sec. 2, cl. 2.  Officers can be removed from office by impeachment and conviction.  Id. at Art. II, sec. 3.  In short, "Officers" are members of the executive branch, not the legislative.  So it's contrary to the plain language of the Constitution to insert members of Congress into the line of presidential succession.

And I really hope that this discussion stays on message boards and never has to be litigated, because that would be a huge fucking mess.

I hope not.  She has overseen the loss of the majority and the Presidency since she's taken the reigns.  Dems need someone closer to center and preferably not from California.

I don’t see impeachment happening with a GOP Senate through 2020.

If the Dems take the house in 18, they will impeach Trump after Mueller's report comes out.

Highly unlikely the Dems take the Senate.  The GOP Senate will not remove him (just like Clinton).

Which is probably good for the Dems, because they'd rather run against Trump in 20.

The speculation a Republican Senate will not remove Trump upon impeachment with a democrat controlled House is a miscalculation IMO for a few reasons.

1. If there really is a blue wave in the house as anticipated, the GOP Senate should take that as a warning shot, “If you don’t do the right thing now and remove Trump, expect more punishment in future elections.”  It could be the GOP’s last opportunity to save the party before the bad dream turns into a nightmare.

2.  If impeached in the House, there will be a trial in the Senate.  It will be televised. It will be nothing like the Clinton trial where he lied about a blow job.  It’s challenging to comprehend how brutal it will go for Trump because there is so much evidence of obstruction of justice, conspiracy to obstruct justice, emoluments violations, campaign finance violations, abusive power, attacks on the free press and that’s before touching the Russia stuff.  It would be naive to think such a humiliating spectacle would have no effect on public opinion.

If Trump is impeached in the House, I imagine he will be strongly urged to resign, essentially Nixon 2.0.

As much as I’d love to see a trial in the Senate, I seriously doubt it ever gets there.

I don't think that you appreciate how the mind of a narcissistic reality television show star is going to weigh the risk/benefit analysis related to an impeachment trial.

The one thing narcissists fear the most is public humiliation/shame.  That’s why he’s so easily blackmailable.

I’m counting on his narcissism when faced with an impeachment trial.

No way Trump resigns.  Not a chance.

Trump is a huge pussy.  Anytime he’s challenged to stand and face the music, he tucks tail and runs.  Just look at the bankruptcies, Trump university settlement, can’t stand up to Putin/Stormy Daniels, or him begging Mexico to pay for the wall.

I can easily see him spinning a resignation for health reason or marriage complications and getting a full pardon from Pence.

Breaking news: Paul Ryan's a dick.

https://www.americamagazine.org/politics-society/2018/04/26/report-house-chaplain-jesuit-priest-was-forced-out-speaker-paul-ryan

Quote

A Jesuit priest who served as chaplain to the U.S. House of Representatives since 2011 was forced to resign by Republican Speaker Paul Ryan earlier this month, The Hill newspaper reported Thursday.

According to the report, Patrick Conroy, S.J., submitted his resignation earlier this month, and it included a reference that it was written at the request of Speaker Ryan, who is Catholic.

“As you have requested, I hereby offer my resignation as the 60th Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives,” the letter reads, according to The Hill.

Members of Congress from both parties expressed shock at the forced resignation, The Hill reports, with one congressional aide telling reporters that the speaker was dismayed by a prayer Father Conroy gave on the House floor that some may have interpreted as being critical of the G.O.P.-backed tax bill that passed last year.

Fun little update for y'all:

Quote
  • Rev. Patrick Conroy, the House chaplain and a Jesuit priest, rescinded his resignation on Thursday after House Speaker Paul Ryan asked him to step down.
  • Conroy has served in the role, an elected position, since 2011.
  • Ryan later released a statement saying that he "accepted" Conroy's letter and would allow him to "remain in his position."

Seen in a comment to that article, and I think it's a pretty spot-on encapsulation of where we are:

Quote

The party of faith and morals assails the House chaplain; the party of law and order targets the FBI, CIA, and Justice Department; the party of family values excuses the President’s payoff of a pornstar. Hell, the party of smaller government and reduced deficits ballooned the national debt!

This is where we are.  Up is down, down is up...and every complaint/accusation is actually a confession.

I truly don't understand how a thinking person can continue to support GOP leadership.  Everything they SAY they stand for, they're against.  Well, except blaming mexicans and such for all of our woes -- on THAT, they follow through.

Patribotics reporting that Ryan is recorded talking w/Russkies on how to funnel money into GOP and his own campaign. I know how Surly feels about Mensch and Patribotics, but his decision not to run was so abrupt, it stinks. Saw it on twitter.

His decision not to run was not abrupt... almost everyone was expecting it.

Patribotics isn’t quite the infowars of the left, but it’s close.

Paul Ryan is either 1) himself guilty of something pretty significant, 2) aware of and covering for something pretty significant, or 3) a gutless sack of shit with no regard for right and wrong or sense of the villain he's going to be described as in the history books.

I think a combo of 2 and 3 is most likely, but his behavior fits #1 as well.

I'm sorry, I was told that the deficit was the greatest crisis our country has ever faced, and only voting for the GOP, the party of fiscal responsibility, would save us.

Was I not correctly informed?

I may need to complain to the management.
