Bummed about this. Older kid and I watch Friends and she loves MP. I always felt this might be his fate but I hate that she has to experience this type of loss. Guy was on top of the world for a time. We just watched Fools Rush In and will watch Whole Nine Yards pretty soon. He was the glue of that show for a time. Demons are hard to fight. RIP Matt.

I was a senior in HS when Friends came out, and it was a really fun show when you were moving off to college and starting that next phase of your life and trying to figure out what the hell you were doing. It wasn't as clever or funny as Seinfeld and I never understood the constant need to compare/rate them.

We have addiction threads on this board and this is just another big ass reminder as we get old. My other memory of Matthew Perry was from Growing Pains and dying as the drunken boyfriend who just had to drive.

Chandler's death has got me thinking about Jennifer Aniston's cold studio nips. So that's nice.

I know it's popular now to trash the show.  Was it the greatest comedy ever?  Nah?  But it was pretty solid, especially for the first 3-4 seasons and Perry's timing and snark were a reason it was.

i like to rewatch easy sitcoms to go to sleep, full seasons...Seinfeld, Cheers, etc. i had never done a rewatch of Friends at all, not even syndication, but all the Matthew Perry stories the past year or so got me kind of interested in a 'what i know now' kind of way, so i recently wrapped up a full rewatch.

i was surprised it was a lot funnier than i remembered, i found myself chuckling quite a bit. his appearance did change drastically season to season.

Chandler was a great character (initially) and the best part of that show (aside from the previously mentioned nipples). That dude went through a lot, starting early in life. RIP

Chandler openly dating Monica ended the funny in his character.

Give me The One With the Free Porn as Peak Chandler.

He’s also really funny in Fools Rush In. Underrated movie.

Again RIP to a terrific performer.

Loved him in Friends. He made the show. Imo.
Was reading a few articles from reputable sources (most are citing TMZ on this) that said no illegal stuff just anti-anxiety, anti-depressants and a COPD medication. I’m sorry he struggled with demons for so long. It’s a recurring theme for a lot of people. I do wonder if the damage had been done to his body and maybe he just had a heart attack. And subsequently became incapacitated and drowned. None of my speculation matters. My uncle died in May from a heart attack and died within about two minutes of talking to his cousin. Literally. Just finished the call—his cousin said he was coughing a lot. And within two minutes my cousins (his daughters) both got notifications from his iPhone watch that his heart had stopped.

He made Friends. He was my favorite character. His delivery for the laughs was impeccable.

this is my take as well. i was a young adult when this came out. This show hit at the just the right time in my life (and many, many others). It was almost like watching wish fulfillment.

But yeah, re-watchable it is not.

These are some hard words to read. The man had a heart for other people, but could not take care of himself. I will remember him the way he wished to be thought of. Anyone willing to help an addict in need is someone who has my respect. RIP.

I am normally kind of blaise about celebrity deaths and was not a big fan of Friends but his words there are amazing and I hope bring others some solace.

Given how horribly he treated his body for so many years, I’m surprised he lived that long.

And the Friends haters can piss off.

Yea, I scheduled a physical as soon as read about his passing, and also sitting my beers down earlier than usual.

Coming up on 50 this kind of thing is kicking in the back of my mind these days.

First 3-4 seasons of Friends were great. At least to me they were. Hollywood’d up, for sure, it’s network television, but a fairly accurate account of mid-late 90‘s living/relationships for 20 somethings in a big city. I was in my late teens when the show debuted. Last 5-6 seasons kinda just devolved into a romcom, which lost my attention within a couple of years. Chandler Bing was hilarious and a perfect compliment to the other guys on the show. He had his issues, but that happens with us humans.

RIP Ms Chanandler Bong

Easily my favorite character in one of my favorite sitcoms.  Still sucks to think about him really being gone gone. Quoting the show with friends/family won't be the same.

I don't think I would be as upset if any of the other Friends passed.  He seemed like a genuine good dude that just got caught up with the darkside of addiction.  He seemed like the type that is actually like their character in real life.

His book was sold out on Amazon when I checked Sat night.

We watched Fools Rush In on Saturday night after hearing about it.  RIP, buddy.

So I don’t want to stomp on the man’s casket in front of his family in the first row pews, but does it seem like the outpouring of affection and the level of news coverage is just a little bit bigger than his actual notoriety? I guess it’s because of Friends. Will Jason Alexander get this level of coverage and support?

It's a fairly big deal that one of the lead actors on one of the biggest shows in the waning golden age of broadcast television died at a much early age than normal. Was he relevant lately, no. His drug and alcohol use took that away. But it was a pretty big deal when the cast had their reunion a few years ago. Friends also has cross generational appeal due to the 3 different eras that watched the show: Gen X over the air, Gen Y with Netflix, Gen Z with HBO Max.

No. Alexander is not George in Seinfeld, he is an actor who played many roles such as George.

But I really don't think most people know what Alexander has done with his life professionally and personally since Seinfeld.  When he passes, those masses will still grieve because Seinfeld was a beloved show that marked their lives, much like Friends.
