Living in Omaha

Not sure what part of Asia your family descends from.  From Turkey to the Bering Strait, from the Kara Sea to the isle of Papau.  But the history of Omaha's Chinatown is actually really interesting.  And was once told to me while shitfaced drunk by Orel Hershiser of all people.  My neighbor and sometimes business partner is from there, his father designed and built the Omaha Zoo.  He says Old Market and Papillon neighborhoods.  But if you have kids, then it's a different conversation.

i'm definitely Chinese Cantonese.  And the area is where I'm working is Papillion.

I like that area.  Are you not wanting to live so close to work though?  Perfectly understandable, I'm the same way.  Family considerations?  I really like that town and would be happy to put you in touch with Brad.  There isn't much in that city that is off his radar.  Had he stayed there, he'd have ended up Mayor.

So I got a random recruiter call and META is paying me a shit ton of money to work at a data center in Omaha.  What's a good place to live there?  I'm gonna double the Asian population

it sucks, but on the plus side, you will have a lot of us surlyites hitting you up for a place to stay in mid-june most years.

It's a Midwest city, you'll have plenty of fun, people will be nice, winter will suck, there will be a random drunk comment that could be taken sideways, but you will have enough money saved in 5 years to go wherever you truly want to be. There will be comments about nothing to do in Omaha, but those kinds of people who can't find hobbies in a metro area of 1 million people need constant stimulation and probably haven't read a book in years. I've been to Omaha three times and have loved it every time, but that's because college World Series.

I once upon a time, a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, did some consulting for ConAgra. I think this was before they moved to Chicago, or at least their C-Suite was in Omaha.

It was a strange little town with little personality, in my opinion. I mean, the areas that had personality popped with it, but there weren't many. The steak is good as was suggested but for some reason the people always wanted to eat anything but steak. I guess they get tired of it or take it for granted. There was one CxO who always insisted on sushi. In a land locked state. It was about as good as you can imagine and I assume that is what your dim sum options are going to be like.

I spent a really long time learning how to season and cook a steak so that it’s perfect for me.  When I go out to eat I enjoy ordering something that I most likely will never make for myself.

They gave me 2 months of corporate housing so I guess I can figure out where I want to live when I get up there.  As far as steaks.  I can cook a steak like no other, but I do enjoy a good steak cooked at a restaurant.   As far as housing, my goal is 20 acres and a puppy so the first year I'm probably going to look at an apartment, it doesn't have to be nice, but I rather stay away from the methier areas.  My experience with the midwest, the whiter it is the methier.

I was doing a project when I was still in oil and gas and they sent me to bumfuck Kansas.  Our company at the time insisted we take the clients out for the closeout meeting.  We'd figured we would hit up the steak restaurant.  Client insisted we go to to their local sushi joint as it was one of the best sushi places in Kansas.  I've had sushi all over the world and thoroughly enjoy sushi.  I had to bite my tongue and kept saying how good that sushi was.  At that moment in my life, I finally figured out I was no better than a hooker telling the client how good it felt.

Omaha's a fine town, and I say that as a card-carrying Nebraska loather.  Downtown/Old Market is cool, Benson is cool, there's plenty to do.  Summer, at it's worst, will feel similar to Texas.  The difference is the amount of days at that level are far less.  Winter will be much, much harsher than what you're used to.  The zoo is great, CWS is great, and there are plenty of decent music venues, some great breweries and restaurants, and even a few outdoor opportunities.

It's surprisingly hilly, being located along the Missouri River.  The Loess Hills in Iowa, right across the river, are quite striking for the Midwest/Plains.

Bellevue's a standard Midwestern suburb, with the twist of having a large military population due to the Air Force base there.  Pretty easy shot into downtown though.

I've got a buddy in Des Moines originally from Manchuria and he can get good dim sum (don't ask me, I think pretty much anything described as Chinese food is good) there.  Omaha and Des Moines are basically the same town two hours apart (don't tell anyone in either place that), so I'm sure there'll be some acceptable dim sum there.

A friend from UT married a guy from Omaha. He got laid off at Lehman Bros while she was in law school at Columbia. He wanted to go back and work for his parent's restaurant group, and she took a job at a bankruptcy firm. Hiro 88 is the name of their restaurant. Apparently there's a fair number of Chinese families that settled in Omaha while building the railroads. For flyover country, it's downright diverse.

Then you’re in great shape because you can buy USDA prime at the HyVee cheap, and the pork tastes like no other.

All sushi is frozen so you can have a great sushi restaurant anywhere.

I met Oral Hershiser at a blackjack table at the Bellagio. His hot blonde 20 something gf wouldn’t let him bet more than $50/hand. He seemed cool enough.

Your friend sounds like a good candidate to ask about Chinese food

Haha.  I mean that is pretty much true.  Some of the best sushi I've ever had was in Vegas.
