Why did Canada change managers just before this tournament and why didn't we?

0 goals in 3 matches under jesse

canadian federation totally fucked up not moneywhipping herdman in to staying

canada were on a trajectory to pass mexico as #2

totally different situation

we should have never rehired gerg to now be in a position to need to fire him but knowing our fed won't do it and we're going to waste hosting a world cup

Stu Holden gets paid by the word. Fuck, man.

I mean, have you seen his wife? Part of Mallorca ownership, good friends with John Legend/Teagen. He’s not wasting his time unless he’s getting paid!

I wonder if this is going to be an issue in the other stadiums that are switching from artificial to natural grass like NRG and Jerry World.

I think we all know the answer to that question already.

Found this in the wee hours of the night.

I have no idea whether there is a difference between a Shot On Goal and a “Big Chance”, because they appear to match up.

Anyway, it was the xG that I found surprising. I can’t believe that with all of those breakaways, Argentina still didn’t have at least a 3.0 xG.

I felt that Canada’s xG would be over 1.0, and it was.  Their setup put them in positions to score, so Marsch’s set should have brought them their first goal, but the finishing by Canada & Emi Martinez’s golden gloves kept Canada out of the goal.

This got me wondering so I looked it up:

Shot on goal is obvious, so I won't state it. A big chance though:

Quote

A situation where a player should reasonably be expected to score, usually in a one on one scenario or from very close range when the ball has a clear path to goal and there is low to moderate pressure on the shooter. Penalties are always considered big chances.

It sounds like big chances and shots on goals can overlap, but not necessarily.

I still don’t think that this would have been a goal if he didn’t sky it. I think that the shot would have been blocked and gone back behind Wondo or out for a corner.

But that does appear to be a Big Chance.

Just got free tickets from the YMCA to Sunday’s USA game for being a coach. Taking the family.

So they are giving the tickets away at this point.

Cheap Seats are $70 from Ticketmaster or whatever the official tickets are, but I think that StubHub tickets are now down to $50 for the cheapest seats.

May want to buy tickets Sunday afternoon.

At least the grass didn’t come up like it did for England vs Denmark.  The goaltender for Argentina said copa would never be better than the euro because of the fields.  Lol

USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie has joined the mounting criticism of the “frustrating” field conditions at Copa America.

The playing surface for the tournament opener between Argentina and Canada at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta was heavily criticized by players and Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni after the game.

The venue has a grass field placed on top of the usual artificial turf used by Atlanta United in Major League Soccer and is one of a number of stadiums changing field conditions for the Copa.

The USMNT play their second game of Copa, against Panama, in Atlanta.

Scaloni said the surface was “not good for spectacle” and “not up to standard for these players” which include Inter Miami star Lionel Messi.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez went further calling the pitch “a disaster” which “jumped up on you as you ran.” He later described the field as “a trampoline.”

McKennie and the USMNT will play at AT&T Stadium for their opening game against Bolivia on Sunday with the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys bringing in newly-planted grass for the tournament.

It will get a first run out when Peru face Chileon Friday night but speaking ahead of that game McKennie explained the difficulties such surfaces present for players.

“I think what Martinez was saying was completely true,” he said. “It’s frustrating, especially as a player. You know, whenever you do come here to America you play in a stadium that can fit 70,000 people but 25,000 show up. You don’t really have an atmosphere. And then you’re playing on a football field, with laid grass that’s all patchy and it breaks up every step you take. It’s frustrating.”

The European Championship, being played simultaneously in Germany, has also been marked by intense debate over the state of pitches with a number of those being used cutting up during play.

McKennie, though, still believes his European counterparts have it better.

“If you look at the Euros, they’re all playing on great fields, great grass, football-specific stadiums, soccer-specific stadiums, and you see the quality of the football,” he said.

“You can play a 1-2 without wondering if the ball is gonna bounce up before you hit it. You can pass the ball back to the keeper not being afraid that it’s going to bounce over his foot. You see a different type of soccer.

“I was just watching Netherlands-France right now and I was joking around — the center back was dribbling and he played it into the midfield, the guy played it back to him and then he played it back again. I’m like ‘that can’t happen here, because that ball, the second one might end up at the head.'”

The hope for the 2024 Copa, a second edition of the tournament in the U.S. after the 2016 edition, is to help grow the sport in the country ahead of it hosting the World Cup in 2026.

McKennie believes improvements in field conditions need to be a priority to help that process.

“It’s obviously frustrating,” he added, “and I think for these tournaments to even grow here and be a sought-after tournaments to watch and follow, that’s one of the first steps that needs to be corrected for sure.

“Everyone knows that football is a big business, it’s all about the dollars and money in pockets but at the end of the day we need the best conditions to be able to do what we love and get the best out of us and the best results.

“Like I said, not having to worry about whether the ball is going to bounce 10ft in the air when it hits the ground or 1ft.”

Because @Buzzrock didn’t move this over ….

This is bad take because the question she was asked was who is the best player in the world was (ie - was it Messi). So don’t tell me who is going to shine, tell me who the best player you think is playing right now.

She shouldn’t put up with abuse, but she should be called out for a bad take.

I was watching when she said this.  When she was asked, I actually thought she was going to name a female player for a second.  It appeared as if she was about to say a name, then thought better of it.

She seems to be having a bad day. I'm willing to volunteer to make it a lot better for her ... or possibly a lot worse. Either way, it'd be a good day for me.
