Jeppson's Malort.  These Pants Ain't Gonna Shit Themselves.

My in-laws were pretty lax this year.  Only a couple snide comments over the course of a whole week.  My MiL, super sweet lady, had her usual rants about how everything's going to hell.  But looking back on 15-20 years of Thanksgivings across many administrations, I realized with the benefit of hindsight-she's always been convinced everything is the work of Satan.  We talked about it after mass, and it's just her way of coping with her worldview, not overly political actually.  Took me awhile to realize that.  It's not so much Biden or gay rights, it's just that everything outside the kitchen window is the Devil's handiwork.  One of my wife's BiL had on a "Let's Go Brandon" t-shirt when they get got into town.  I like him a lot but he's not political at all.  I finally broke down and asked him about the shirt.  And true to form, "I dunno, it was on a clearance rack and it pisses off people at work."  At least he's honest.  Another of the wife's BiL was going on and on about backing the blue, law and order, a rudderless Biden America, taking a stance against illegality.  He's Black.  So I said nothing.  But all in all, and being sober for it, it was pretty bland politically speaking.  Particularly after the ISIS-Bentley co-jihad of Niagara Falls didn't particularly pan out.

Now, Christmas Eve with my cousins in Dripping Springs.  Three of whom are borderline Qanon with serious drinking problems.  This shit gonna be lit as fuck.  This'll be the year where her husband claims that Biden is putting his company out of business with his tragic economic policies.  He sells high-end paper.  Like paper you'd buy in a stationery store.  You know that thing that nobody has done since Biden was 24 years old.

I mean, I understand the gut reaction of the "stay in your lane" crowd whenever somewhere famous speaks about real-world issues. I think it's incredibly lazy and hypocritical in 2023 when dumb mother fuckers are coming out of the woodwork to use every platform that they can get their hands on to spew bullshit. But I at least understand the simple-mindedness behind "entertainers are only paid to entertain."

But saying, "I disagree with literally everything Taylor Swift stands for" is like saying you disagree with the guy who has World Peace and End Hunger bumper stickers. You may think that they're naive and foolishly idealistic (another default response when anyone younger than dirt gives a political opinion), but what kind of asshole disagrees with the message?

I heard what was effectively a "Taylor Swift is full of shit and doesn't know anything about politics or leadership, but I'll defend her right to the death to say it unlike the other side she supports which wants to limit free speech" diatribe from a guy in the store in Fort Worth over the holiday.  All I could think was, "Dude, nobody's asking you to die...just don't buy her records.  Not a huge deal.  Also, quit showing up to her concerts around a buncha 12yo girls, fucking creepy asshat."

Ah yes... while politics were mostly avoided on Thanksgiving, I did enjoy informing my SIL that the "attack" was a rich dumbass who left the casino in his Bentley on the way to a KISS concert.  Chef's kiss.

We should only listen to accountants on politics. What struggles did pop stars have to overcome besides musicians being the most saturated market in the face of the earth and becoming the top .01% in their craft? No lessons to learn there. Let’s listen to the pool cleaner that eats tablets

Google tells me that Vice President Harris passed the bar exam on her second attempt and that on average the California bar exam has a pass rate of around 50%.

Donald Trump won’t allow his alma mater to release his college transcripts. But he thinks the sound of windmills causes cancer and suggested that maybe injecting disinfectant into your veins would be a good way to fight a virus. He said we took over the airports during the Revolutionary War and once said, “Frederick Douglass is an example of somebody who’s done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more, I notice.” He also thinks Hungary borders Russia. The list goes on and on. Anyone who doesn’t know that Trump is a fucking moron is a fucking moron themselves.

In terms of the people who say, “this country is going to hell” for decades and decades, I give Trump credit that he just spoonfed these people what they want to hear. These voters then assume that Trump is going to turn back the clock. No, he’s just going to feed your outrage even more. He doesn’t really know the next step.

^  this.  You gotta give him credit---uneducated people have been bitching and moaning about the trajectory of America since right after WWII/Korea.  They felt left behind before the race even started.  But every major political figure kept talking and talking about the future of our country.  But Trump harnessed the power of looking backwards.  8 years later, he still doesn't have a plan except that not having a plan is the whole fucking point.  Which is makes him still so dangerous.

Even his most adamant supporters on here don't really know what his vision for the past taking place in the future looks like.  And these are educated people.  Imagine the fucked up, delusional prospects in the heads of his more 'common' base.  I used to laugh at Matt Dowd early on when he'd describe Trump as a canvas on which an ugly part of American could paint its idyllic countryside.  But he was absolutely correct.  That made him a good candidate.  Making people feel good about their vision, backwards though it may be, was the cherry on top.  That's what has made him so unstoppable.  It's one thing to empower people to get a seat at the table and let their hair down.  It's quite another to make them feel greatness for doing it.  In that singular ability, he stands alone.  As we've beaten to death, our prize mistake was a lack of imagination.

I always assumed that the machine was a printer.  The things you learn...

My wife and I spent Thanksgiving with our son and daughter-in-law.  We see eye to eye on politics and most everything else, so it was a nice, pleasant weekend.  My side of the family has its Christmas get-together in two weeks.  That has much more potential for conflict, but we usually leave the politics behind and just concentrate on loving each other, so I think that it will be unrealized potential.  I hope so, anyway.

Yes, and mirroring the words of the 50+ age group is a huge win politically. They vote and many in that group always think the new generations are: lazy, disrespectful, stupid, their new ____ music is smut and sucks, and they don't appreciate our struggles. Lean into their words and you can get their attention. Political conventional wisdom is that you have to offer a solution but Trump has realized that cruelty (to others) is the only solution some want to hear.

I'm in my mid 50s and believe that America has never been greater than today. Today Nov 28th. Even with the craziness of the Trump side of America and the potential he could win.

Looking backwards is a strategy that autocrats use to fan the flames of discord and promote xenophobia and violence under the guise of righteousness.

Things change, societies progress. These morons don’t really understand what it means to go backwards. Just look at Russia whose embraces xenophobia and failed policies from the past. 300,000+ dead for a vanity project.

I avoid talking politics with literally anyone in person like it's my full-time job because I prefer not banging my head against a fence post.

My family is pretty good about it too, but our yearly Thanksgiving ritual is still good for a couple of overheard gems.

The holiday classic, "Well, if 'they' just didn't resist..." is a staple.

But this year I heard a brand new one. "I like Taylor Swift's music, but I'm against literally everything she stands for." Like, what does that even mean? I get that her dipping her toes into politics has painted a target on her back, but I have no fucking clue what "policies" she actually represents other than "inclusion and love are good."

Why does that person hate making money?

Well, I'm on the wrong side of 60 now so I'm the crazy dad, and my approach is just to be "lightly racist".

When anyone says Indian I say "dot or feather?" and if anyone mentions that someone is form one of the lesser Far East countries I say "Are they Japanese or Chinese?"

I told one of the little nephew types that a wolverine lived under the fire pit.  I don't think he knew what a wolverine was put he went to play somewhere else.

That type of thing.

My BIL now just look at each and walk away.

Someone started talking about ‘kids getting operations these days’ after the pumpkin pie.

We both gave each other a look and walked in the other room.

About 10 minutes later we walk in, interrupt and asked about a family friend’s last trip.

I think we did some variation of this like 3 times.

Truly hateful people and conspiracy nuts used to get shamed, or at least were embarrased to express their views openly in polite society. At worst, the ones who weren't capable of shame were limited by their geographic footprint and generally isolated from the rest of us. Maybe they'd find a local clan or drive to Waco, but their reach and ability to pull others who were near the fringes down with them was minimal. Now, these same idiots have a completely unearned global platform to spew hate and have their views validated by others, further amplifying them, and sucking the gullible into worm holes that they're unlikely to ever recover from. Along with their ability to feel shame or recognize social cues. (Seriously, what the fuck happened to people being able to ascertain that someone avoiding eye contact and saying "uh-huh" means "I don't agree with you, but I don't want to talk about it. Kindly shut the fuck up.")

It's not even a red/blue thing. I'm an Aggie from a military family who currently works with the Navy in San Diego and have off-roading, boating, shooting, and camping hobbies...almost all of my friends and family lean right. It's a open hate and negativity thing. We've all observed what 40 years of Rush, Fox, and now the even more extreme sources available to them everytime they touch their phone have done to some in the older generations. My wife's MIL never used to give a fuck about gay people (or at least knew enough to keep her views to herself); now, after a couple decades of insular churches and social media algorithms, if she sees a commerical with two women holding hands, prepare yourself for a 5 minute lecture on how disgusting it is for the people in Hollywood (you know the ones) to prop up and celebrate that kind of thing when there might be kids watching. I've observed dozens of these transformations (maybe they're the same people that they always were, and now they're just comfortable to say the quiet part out loud). You'd be an idiot NOT to at least limit you and your family's exposure to these people.

Obviously, gullibility and internet and source vetting ineptitude isn't limited to the old. Not trying to single them out.

I guess I thought I was unscathed too soon.

Yesterday I got a call from a cousin on the seldom-visited believing-every-damn-thing-on-Facebook branch, instructing me on everything we should do for my elderly mother. See, she talked to her once on the phone earlier that day (hasn't visited her in decades) and pretty much is an expert. I couldn't get a word in edgewise to tell her we already know X, Y, and Z, and do all kinds of things, but blah blah blah.

That whole side can spend an hour on the phone talking about nothing, so I just told her I was working and hung up. By random chance, I was.

Imagine a condescending Hugh Freeze calling up another coach to tell them how to defend against the pass.

Mrs.LL laid down the law months ago that there would be no discussion of politics at Thanksgiving.  And Mrs.LL's edicts are generally followed by anyone who doesn't want to lose a testicle.

There were two minor exceptions:

A brief discussion over the kitchen island between her mildly-racist-but-solidly-anti-Trump father, her similarly situated brother, and her MAGA/Qanon-adjacent cousin about race.  There's kind of the usual arguments against CRT and the denial of systemic racism in America.  And then I bring up redlining.  Blank stares all the way around.  So I quickly give a lesson on what redlining was and its ongoing effects.  And after 20 years around these people, they know I'm not bullshitting or making stuff up, so there's just a general "Huh--I didn't know that."

I don't know that it changed any opinions.  But it ended the conversation.  And perhaps it planted the seeds of further thought.

The other one was with my nephew.  He's young and idealistic.  He says he's voting for RFK Jr.  Oh, and he's in a swing-ish state (Virginia).  I absolutely went off on him.  I told him he might as well vote for Trump, and that would mean among other things that his super-hot girlfriend that he brought to Thanksgiving wouldn't be able to get an abortion if one slipped past the goalie.  And he'd get to explain to her why she had to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term because of his disdain for the two-party system.

I think that one may have had more impact.

Ironically, these people need Jesus (real Jesus, not GOP prosperity gospel / punish the libs Jesus).

This is the part that I can't wrap my head around.  I grew up in the church.  I still consider myself a Christian.  But the hate spewed by others who claim the same faith really makes me sad and/or angry.  Jesus was all about love and serving others and these people are all about hate, and wanting to destroy others who look or act differently than they do.  But they wrap themselves in Christianity.  They go to church every Sunday and apparently do not listen to a word that is preached.  Or, even worse, they go to a church that preaches hate.

Dude. COVID was the worst. All the way into 2022, my dad's religious zealot of wife would start EVERY phone call that I'd make to my dad with some variation of "Have they let you out of your houses yet!?" or "How many people did you see wearing masks in their car??" Hardy har har har. They truly have no idea how California--or really any other state beyond a couple--operate.

I'd love to see the correlation between negativity, hatred, and disregard for social etiquette with that person's lack of travel and number of places lived. But I'd bet they'd be able to list off all the cities and states that are hellholes in no time flat.

One Thanksgiving, my mom’s oldest sister asked me if I was smoking weed. Sure, Aunt Caroline, every day, says 17 year old me. Ain’t it just like a teenager, she says, tell you the truth to your face and expect you not to believe it.

That’s all I got.

This Thanksgiving while we were eating turkey dinner, my sister told us a story about her recently trying a THC gummy she bought at a vape store. Apparently it didn't get her high but had the side effects of being high.

Then my other sister said you have to be careful of the gummies because she took too much in Colorado and ended getting stuck in a repeating circle at a Chik Fil A drive-thru. lol she doesn't know how long she was there but that's when it kicked in then she parked and freaked out for good while.

That story was finished with, "I only smoke weed now." Then told us about her and a cousin smoking joints on Lake Travis the prior week.

My dad just laughed with a "wtf" face.
