For your consideration....

UT RTF alums (close friends of my kids) have a short movie that premiered this year at Sundance, winning the Grand Jury Award, as well as a Special Jury Award at SXSW.  These awards qualified the film for an Academy Award nomination.  They're currently undertaking grassroots efforts to gain publicity and attention among Academy members.

The film is currently available for free viewing on Vimeo (link below).  If you know anyone associated with an Academy member please consider giving them a heads up and encouraging them to watch and consider for nomination.

That's pretty great.

So how does a film get a nomination?

Short films can qualify for a nomination by either receiving a theatrical release or a qualifying award at a competitive film festival (such as the two awards Kayla won at Sundance and SXSW).  Once qualified, then the films get sent to Academy members who vote to advance to the 15 film shortlist stage.  So currently the film is in this stage, where it's been sent to Academy members to be voted on whether to advance to short list.  The announcement of the short list is usually right before Christmas, and from that list the nominees are chosen and announced in late January.

So while the window for votes is closing, there is still an opportunity to reach Academy members to get them to watch it and hopefully vote for it to advance.  However, the cost to promote a film to get the nomination is significant, and they've elected to forego a paid PR campaign and instead focus on developing the short into a feature (the short is a segment of a feature screenplay she has written).  Here's an article that does a very good job of explaining the whole process.

Sadly "When you left me on that Boulevard" didn't make the short list.  They simply didn't have the PR machine behind them, and their grassroots social media efforts just weren't enough.  However, the future looks bright for these filmmakers, and I'm hoping that they are able to complete the feature upon which the short was based.

Here's the list that did make it:

Live Action Short Film

“The After”
“The Anne Frank Gift Shop”
“An Avocado Pit”
“Bienvenidos a Los Angeles”
“Dead Cat”
“Good Boy”
“Invincible”
“Invisible Border”
“Knight of Fortune”
“The One Note Man”
“Red, White and Blue”
“The Shepherd”
“Strange Way of Life”
“The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar”
“Yellow”
