Pretty sure they’re testing during the daytime only, which is totally different conditions to when they qualify and race.

Also, the tires may be different. Basically, it’s hard to compare these times to anything from the race weekend.

Yep. Apparently only Pirelli knows who was on which of the 6 compounds tested. They also controlled tire pressures, stint length and fuel loads each car.

Dumb question but I'll ask anyway: For tires, does Pirelli and/or F1 management deliberately design in a certain level or rate of tire degradation, to force the cars to pit somewhat often? I.e. Is Pirelli capable of making a tire that could last a whole race, but the tires are designed to wear out after a certain time, for competition reasons?

Sometimes pit stops are the only interesting thing going on in a race, but on the other hand I hate to think that the tires are intentionally engineered to wear out faster than necessary.

They could definitely make one that would last the whole race, but I don't think the drivers would like it very much.  F1 wants teams to have to stop at least once though and they do it with tires instead of making them refuel.

They are. That's what F1 wanted and apparently still wants. There's a lot F1 could do even within that m.o. though that could make the racing more variable while reintroducing a 'push, push, push' mentality and getting rid of the ridiculous tire nursing. But I guess F1 is just too lazy for that these days. They'd rather just fuck around with stupid 'fixes' for shit that's not broken than find solutions for the things that are. Even when they do find productive solutions, they just ditch them within a year or so because a big team or two just can't get their heads around how to make it work and be quick at the same time, and then cry 'safety'.

Can Pirelli produce a race tire that performs well over at least half or even all of a race distance the way Michelin, Bridgestone, etc  have done with ease for decades? I don't know, but having owned some myself that were on a new car I bought, I have my doubts. Pirelli tires are ass, my dude. I'll never buy another tire not named Michelin, but if I had to, there are so many brands that are way ahead of Pirelli that they would never even be an option to consider, esp at such high prices.

Fuck cancer. Eddie Jordan says he's fighting an aggressive form of bladder and prostate cancer. https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/eddie-jordan-reveals-aggressive-cancer-diagnosis/10681892/?_ga=2.122877195.1417257564.1732902104-940737110.1610577366

I took a photo of Mrs. Wood (no pics) with Eddie in the Paddock a few years ago. I'll see if I can find it. Very happy, friendly man on that day, as he's always seemed to me whenever I've seen him.

This. Go to Michelin or Bridgestone but then make the tires actually make a difference. I don't care if they still require a stop and two different compounds but you shouldn't be on a soft that is maybe a tenth quicker per lap but lasts 10 laps compared to the hard's 30.... Oh, and next week that hard might be the soft. Fucking stupid. Perelli sucks.

Re: Colapinto, it's Alpine, yall. I was just told today he's signed with them.  Maybe in a reserve role, or maybe Doohan will be reserve. My friend thinks it's for the #2 seat. WeWillSee.

Already seeing a conflicting report, but it's GPBlog, so who knows...

I don't really care about the tires themselves.   I think there should be zero regulation on them.  No forced pit stops for tire change, but a team can pick and choose any tire compound they want and run it the entire race, or change tires every 2 laps if they want.  Also, bring back refueling, with zero sporting regulations about when and how it should be done.

Several steps further would be to eliminate all technical regs completely and let teams develop engines and cars however they like.  Safety regs would of course still apply, but if you want to build a 6-wheeled car with an 11-ft-high rear wing, go for it.

Now get off my lawn.

The racing would be super boring with these rules. It would require crazy BoP (which would be horrific to see adjusted with this FIA crew!).

I disagree.  It would be super-expensive for sure and almost no constructors could afford it, but cars would be custom-tailored to drivers in a way that hasn't been done in the sport for 4 or 5 decades.  I think we'd discover driver preferences and advantages that are currently masked by the standardization of the technical regs.

It would certainly be fun in that sense, but without some kind of regulations, the cars would not be that close in speed without BoP.

I mean, the WEC has to utilize lots of BoP and those cars are mostly only different with their powertrains and weights.

You know something?  You're a real buzzkill this morning.  I recommend you go outside, go for a walk, fly a kite, maybe find yourself a laughing baby or a rainbow to smile at.  Come back later with a better attitude.

Next thing, you're gonna tell me there's no way Texas can beat Clemson because Klubnik has a score to settle in Austin, or something.

Sheesh.

Sheesh.

Nah man, we don’t need any BoP vs Clemson!!!
