Still can't believe Hamilton to Ferrari. That's wild to me.

For those that were fans back then... what was the feeling with he jumped from McLaren to Mercedes?

Fuck it, not worth the drama.

The only real drama about him back then was Nicole Sherzinger bullshit. McLaren could have won the championship in 2012 if they didn't have reliability issues. Awesome car, awesome team. Most McLaren fans were disappointed but also thought he might have been making a mistake. Then the turbo era hit.

The thing about the move was Mercedes persuaded him in their pitch by explaining in minute detail how their car was going to dominate the turbo regulations. Honestly, to me, this feels like a "I want to drive the red car" situation and why not? Every other champion has done it.

Accurate. In hindsight we may have been a bit off.

Yeah like others have said, many people thought it was a mistake because Merc weren't really challenging for championships. In 2013, they were right, but from the outside, most of us couldn't see the domination that was coming with the hybrid pu era. Unlucky for Nico / lucky for Lewis that Michael retired when he did and not a year earlier or later & no other top driver was available. Probably lucky for Lewis too that he was P4 in 2012, or he might have stayed at McLaren. Lucky for Merc that Lewis was available for 2013, but they were gonna win either way with that hybrid PU head start over everyone else.

I've been on this for a while, so it's nice to see some drivers talking about it now. Fernando and George have taken up the cause ...

Alonso: Three days of single-car testing unfair on F1 drivers
Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso says it is "unfair" for Formula 1 drivers to only get one and a half day of winter testing in Bahrain.

https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/alonso-three-days-of-single-car-testing-unfair-on-f1-drivers/10575897/

Quote

"We have very limited testing in Bahrain," Alonso said. "I've been thinking all winter about this, how unfair it is that we only have one day and a half to prepare a world championship.

"There is no other sport in the world, with all the money involved and with all the marketing and the good things that we say about Formula 1 and being closer and closer to the fans, [where that happens].

"I cannot understand why we then go to Bahrain for four days, which could be two and two for the drivers. If you go to three, which is not even, which is an odd number, you cannot divide between the drivers.

"And I don't know why we don't go with two cars? Because we are already in Bahrain and we race the following week."

Alonso is not the only driver who has led calls to open up winter testing to two cars, with Mercedes man and GPDA director George Russell also behind the idea.

"Personally speaking, I don't think three days is enough, because you have got to remember from a driver's perspective, that is one and a half days per driver," Russell said last year.

His appearance on Top Gear right after the decision sorta covers it. In hindsight, obviously a great decision. At the time, seemed a little crazy.

I have no idea if anything in this report is accurate, but it’s pretty insane if true. If Horner really is offering 650k, then there’s some real evidence/legitimacy to the claims. The article makes it sound like Horner would’ve been fired to at least suspended but the Thais who own 51% of Red Bull are in Horner’s corner no matter what and won’t allow it.

F1 always brings the drama.

Apparently Clark County (Las Vegas) doesn’t have a contract with F1. A commissioner out there is asking questions and is not happy with the race.

“It turns out that we never signed a contract — that was all with the LVCVA,” Segerblom said Tuesday in a phone conversation with the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “So everybody keeps saying that we’ve got three years. We never committed to three years, to my knowledge.”

If that was Texas, the County wouldn't have much of a say because it's inside the Las Vegas city limits.  They would be involved, but not in charge of anything.

It doesn't matter. If the big casinos want it, it's happening. If they don't want it, it'll be gone. Not sure how much longer F1 or the casinos will actually want it though.

COTA is in the city limits since it was annexed, and is surrounded by the County. The County's role here is apparently for Margaret Gomez to push through whatever COTA wants, while simultaneously contnuing to ignore her constituents' needs, into perpetuity.

Pro tip,  the strip isn't inside Las Vegas city limits.  It's in unincorporated Clark County and is technically called paradise. So it is completely a county issue there.

Las Vegas mayor is bitching about the new A's stadium going on the site of the trop. County told her tough shit, not in your city so EABOD.

What? Why? My feel was that Vegas F1 was a big hit.

It was a very entertaining race imho, and I actually liked the way the cars looked and ran on the layout ... but the locals were not amused with the way FOM operated there. From FOM's side, there's the expense. It was apparently far more expensive than they anticipated, but future races should be far less expenive for them.

ok, so how real is any/all of this Horner stuff?

if it's as cut and dried as one group makes you think, one would assume he would be toast - if he sent inappropriate pics to another employee / it was a sexual thing they would have absolutely suspended him at the least. the 650k stuff sure seems like absolute bullshit, why would he so clearly say he was innocent "allegations made, which i fully deny" but offer 650k for it to go away?

the whole "independent lawyer did the investigation but went on vacation before rendering the results of said investigation" absolutely sounds like a plant as well. the leaks about the 51/49 split and how the thais are pushing so hard to keep him seem absolutely ridiculous.

i just am assuming at this point it's all bullshit - if it was even kind of legit, any decent sized company in the universe would have suspended him while the investigation was ongoing.

this whole thing reeks of two well known horrible human beings (Marko and Jos) pushing a narrative to try and force someone out.

They also built an entire dedicated F1 facility. F1 leaving Vegas after a race or two would be like Hamilton going to Ferrari. Never going to happen.

Yep. Ferrari?!?!? Never gonna happen!!! (Even though he's hinted at it before)

The Vegas pit facility, much like COTA's pit building for example, is mostly 'flex space', like you'd see at a convention center. IF or when they decide to move on from Vegas years from now, that building will likely go for a nice price in a place like Vegas. I think they'll do at least 1 or 2 more races there, but after that, who knows. And if they get their act together re: how they deal with the locals & not being so heavy-handed, who knows, maybe they can even win them back. If they don't ... at best it will be an acrimonious existence for them in Vegas.

Traffic was a nightmare with the track construction for months and anyone who works in a casino outside of the dealers who made a killing that weekend probably hated how hard it made getting to work.

Yep and it wasn't just that weekend. It was for weeks or even months with road reconstruction, fences & lighting going up and down, the bridge being put up and taken down, etc, etc. The first year was the worst, but they still expect major traffic diruptions for 4 months out of the year due to F1. That temporary bridge is a major sore spot for the locals.

I was in Vegas in August last year.  Traffic was a nightmare due to re-surfacing the streets.  Three months before the race.

And the problem there is,  that in a lot of cities you could pave from like 11 pm or midnight to 5 am and not have a big impact. Not in Vegas. Logistical nightmare.

Besides F1, has another car/driver won 20 straight races in any professional series?

Google is no help.

Watching old F1 videos on dominating cars/teams and no one came close, consecutive or not.

Really hope we don’t get a repeat of last season.

nailed it on the first guess:

In the 2002 outdoor championship, Carmichael won an unprecedented 24 of 24 motos to take his third consecutive 250 outdoor title.

In 2004, Carmichael was injured for the Supercross season, he had a knee injury (torn ligaments/meniscus) but came back for the Motocross season to record his second perfect season; winning 24 of the 24 motos he raced and all 12 overalls on his Honda CRF 450; his first effort on a 4-stroke bike.

Triggered. I wasn't really into Supercross but my buddy convinced me it would be awesome and drug me to the Vegas Supercross at Sam Boyd in 2002. I hated that little shit but no one could hold his jock. He was so fast it was stupid. Honestly the only comparison I know to what max did in the red bull last year.

Even when Schumacher or vetted or Lewis were dominating,  they didn't win every fucking race. I'm worried we are in for a repeat. Lewis doesn't leave if he thinks merc is putting out a real contender. Ferrari could fuck up a wet dream. McLaren and Aston are fun stories but not competition for RBR. Worried we are all going to be watching 2-20 this year. Again.

I was definitely a hater, but I kind of grew to respect him later in his career. I was at Budds Creek for the MXoN in 2007, his last race, and seeing how fast he was in person was staggering. He had to give up his gate to Villopoto in the first moto, got wiped out at the start, then proceeded to pass everyone but two dudes.
