I have one very shitty memory of freezing my ass off there in 1991…

The 1998 game, while good for us... was fucking miserable as well.

I honestly would have thought it was colder than the Miami game, but looked it up and Miami was 38 at kickoff, vs 43 vs MSU.  although there was some fog and drizzle reported in that one.

Not long enough, I'll probably still be alive when it runs out. If Chokelahoma wasnt perpetually broke we could go halfsies on any renovations the city of Dallas is either too poor or inept to make. That aside, the game must be played at the original Cotton Bowl (even if crumbling to dust) while the State Fair is open to the public. Everything else is just minor details.

I was there.  It was not the most pleasant experience I have had as Longhorn fan.  Escalators would not have helped the experience.

Had to drive through a massive ice storm to get to the 1978 Cotton Bowl where I got to see the Domers ruin our undefeated season while freezing my nuts off.  Wouldn’t have missed it for the world

Y’all are insane for ever, ever trying to enter the stadium there…

That's exiting the stadium, not entering. mdleast and I were also in that mess trying to get out. Everything on the east side looked like that.

Part of my artsy-bohemian past was spent living in a old warehouse loft one block from Fair Park. 3 years in 1990s.

-- Cheap rent, daily morning jogs through Fair Park and all that fantastic Art Deco, nearby coffeehouse with the artsy-leftist-intellectualist-bohemian chicks (think "Les Amis" in Austin), a decent cafe, some mostly lame art galleries, and Fletchers corn dogs whenever I want during the Fair, etc. etc etc. Good memories.

The absolute worst day of the year was the Thursday before the UT-OU game. That's when the Okies arrive in the afternoon and proceed to totally clog the streets (and sidewalks) with their crappy RVs, all decked out in Sooner imagery. Thursday nights and most all day Fridays, streets/sidewalks packed with Okies and relatively few Longhorn fans (until Friday night or Saturday.) You could tell that coming to Big D and Fair Park was for Okies like going to New York City or LA. They were in the BIG TIME!!  By sunset, many were drunk and doing Sooner cheers up and down the streets. Boomer! Lulz.

The MSU game was not in the same universe of cold as the Miami game. The Miami game also game with wind.

Hey Grandpa Facebook, that's not the official UT Football. That's a fan group. This is the official one https://www.facebook.com/utfootball/

The SEC most likely will want the game to be the 2:30 Game of the Week. The SEC fans are conditioned to think the 2:30 game is the biggest one since that was the CBS game slot for 20+ years.

My unpopular opinion: $140 mil on this piece of shit is lipstick on a boar hog. It should have been blown up decades ago. And spending that money for basically one game a year plus some Mexican soccer is really stupid financial thinking.

The game should either be home and home or at JerryWorld. If you say we have to maintain tradition and we’ve always played there and it’s culture then look in the mirror when you’re making fun of the Aggies clinging to every fucking whoop shit thing they cling to.

Or play it for real on the red river flipping between the parking lots of Winstar in Thackerville and the porn store in Gainesville.

How much money has Dallas pumped into this stadium since the Jerryworld proposal was voted down? I lived in Dallas at the time and voted for it because the Dallas Cowboys should play in Dallas. They seem to come up with hundreds of millions every few years to keep one game when they could have paid a big chunk and gotten not only this game but the Cowboys and a bunch of big time events. Even more than go to Arlington because Arlington is a shithole.

Strikees me as a move to head off any JerrahWorld encroachment on our State Fair. Our new partners, the SEC, have shown all too much willingness to embrace Jerrah and his stadium, and there is little doubt in my mind that they would move the only true rivalry game we have to that location for a few bucketsful of shekels. On our way out of the XII, it seems pretty reasonable to lock the game in for the foreseeable future.

Well done, well done.

Dallas will have spent more on the cotton bowl and some other bullshit than Arlington’s share of JerryWorld, which was paid off some years ago.
Jerry is doing some upgrades for the World Cup. The new convention center and hotels are going up. The Medal of Honor Museum will be spectacular (got a massive donation from the Jones). AT&T has events every day, plus thousands still go thru for the tour each week. I expect Jerry will be able to get another Super Bowl soon since he won’t have to use that stupid Dallas and Ft Worth split.

If I were to advocate playing this game anywhere but in the Cotton Bowl during the State Fair, I fully would expect to be beat to within an inch of my life by Fletcher's Corn Dogs and waterboarded with beer from waxed-paper cups.

I do not fear change, but I do not support insanity.  This game is too special to mess with the venue or date relative to the State Fair.

Jerruhworld will be 25 years old when this latest deal runs out.

that place shouldn’t be a threat the next time this deal comes up for renewal so that’s nice.

I don't think a move to Jerryworld has ever been a real threat.

I can't imagine that the big money donor/luxury suite owners at both Texas and OU, who have never had the pleasure of watching and hosting our biggest game of the year from their own luxury suites, would be very keen on having to go hat in hand and begging Jerry for the favor of renting one of his suites for the game.

Nope, I expect the game would move to home and home if it ever left the Cotton Bowl.  The big money donors would make sure of it.  And since I don't want that to happen, I'm delighted with this current contract extension and agreement for further stadium improvements.

I think the 2008 renovations were 80 million to add more seats, update the press box, put in more restrooms, upgrade the locker rooms and media center. The economic impact to the city of Dallas is supposedly 36-51 million dollars a year, based on previous reports. Sure, it's one game a year but it's pretty damn important to the economy and the State Fair. The new renovations are being paid through a bond that's being paid back through hotel taxes. So 220 million to renovate a stadium that can and has hosted other big events like the NHL Stars/Predators outdoor game, Coldplay, and the Rolling Stones in the past few years.
But seriously if you want this game to go home and home or to JerryWorld, I mean this in all sincerity, go fuck yourself. The person advocating for it might be the worst poster on the site so it fits.
I don't know if this is true or not, but I read somewhere a few years back that State Fair vendors depend on the inflated crowd numbers that particular weekend and some wouldn't be financially be able to show up if the game goes away from the Cotton Bowl. Of course most of these people have other business ventures the rest of the year, but some of them make the bulk of their yearly money during the state fair weeks.

Yes, that is essentially 100,000 additional customers on gameday. That is a significant number directly paid to the Fair. Then add in the hotel, restaurant, retail, and car rental numbers.
