Poor Things

This movie is strange, weird, unique and awesome all rolled into one. Emma Stone was so ridiculously good in this one. So was Willem Dafoe (Shocking that he is good, I know.) and Mark Ruffalo as well. Emma Stone killed it though from start to finish and her character seems like a fever dream for most of the guys on this website. This really might’ve been the best role she has had so far in her career.

It also seems like they went straight to @Brisketexan for some of the lines in the movie about where we are at as a world society, but then also Brisket for some of the quotes from her sex scenes, which were many. I would highly recommend seeing this as soon as it comes to your local theater.

How much screen time Mark Ruffalo gets is a big consideration for me.

Fair amount because he and Willem Dafoe are both central to the character development of Emma’s story. Everything stays pretty well centered around Emma Stone overall though. She really turned in a great performance. I set no expectations for movies, but if I had set the bar high for her she still would’ve jumped right over it.

I'm still surprised that so many think Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon are good movies. The former is too wordy for its own good -- Nolan cannot write -- and the latter failed to be immersive; it's the work of an old director and an even older editor, unfortunately. Wouldn't call either one of them bad though. Nor even mediocre; they're both solid.  I agree that Barbie was a good, quality, fun/light movie, though.

This one was okay imo. Lanthimos is hit or miss -- not sure which one this is atm, maybe just somewhere in between.

Not that anyone's asking, but I think May December is the best of the year (worldwide even, though it takes so long to judge that because of the sheer amount of productions now readily available to us). John Wick 4 is up there too.

Saw it tonight.  Weird and really fun.  As mentioned, Emma Stone was naked half the movie it felt like.

The sets, CGI, backdrops, and costumes were a lot of fun too.  A lot of steampunk vibe but then also lots of wild colors.  The "Lisbon" stuff I thought was particularly beautiful.  Lots of fisheye lens that I'm not sure really added much.  Definitely a unique movie.

i ducked out of work early this afternoon and went and caught this.  definitely a very unique movie.  i love emma stone so i definitely enjoyed getting to see her tits so often (even if they were small and relatively unspectacular), but the moments of humor and social commentary were really good.  she's getting all the press (for good reason), but i thought ruffalo was pretty hilarious throughout his character's descent.  not sure i'd call it a best picture winner or anything like that, but i did enjoy it and will likely catch it again whenver it starts streaming.

This was one of the strangest movies I've ever seen and also very good.  Interesting flick and Emma Stone most definitely deserved her Oscar.

Este.  It was easily one of the horniest movies I've ever seen. Not sexy. Just horny. Either way, I'm totally glad I saw it.

Probably the weirdest and most visually striking movie I’ve seen since The Lighthouse. Didn’t think Emma Stone’s character or performance really took off till her character’s maturation into exploring what a person is, especially the final quarter of the movie.

I haven't seen this movie, but I've see about 3 minutes of this movie that pretty much sums the whole thing up. Emma wanted to get nekkid. Mission accomplished.

I absolutely hated and loved this movie, which is exactly what I've come to expect from anything Yorgos.

Poor Things inspired me to watch The Lobster. It had its moments but I probably could’ve lived without it, especially one particular scene that was just an awful thing to put on film. The movie could’ve been fine without that scene so it felt like pure shock value.

I would recommend Poor Things to the right friends. I would not recommend The Lobster.

Probably need to watch The Favourite.

Poor Things is his best IMO.  The Favourite is fine, I liked Killing of a Sacred Deer, but every one of his movies has some cringe.  Go read the plot for Dogtooth on wiki.

The only way Poor Things is better than The Lobster is lots of naked Emma Stone.

In all other aspects, I thought The Lobster was a better film.

I felt like Poor Things was trying too hard to be artsy and clever with it's campy sets and fish eyed lenses.

BTW, can you spoiler the one scene you found so offensive?  Nothing is standing out.

I came across Dogtooth in 2011 and randomly watched it one night knowing nothing about Yorgos or the movie. I couldn't get the movie out of my head for months. Haven't missed any of his stuff since.

Finally saw this.  Funny as fuck when it wanted to be, but I was pretty grossed out/felt dirty on the whole and while intellectual great, pretty challenging flick.   Goddamn Willem was fantastic.

My favorite of his is probably The Favourite.  Again, mostly for the humor that just jumps up at you when you least expect it.

I'd like to thank Disney+ for promoting this at the top of my Disney+ home page.

As a reminder (I didn't scroll through much to see if it's got its own thread), Yorgos Lanthimos has another pic coming out: Kinds of Kindness and the cast once again includes Emma Stone.

Also will have:  William Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie, Hunter Schafer, and Joe Alwyn.

It's going to premiere at Cannes in May and scheduled to be released in the U.S. June 21st.

His films are rather compelling and riveting. I never quite know what to expect but I enjoy them.

Oh wow, that's soon.  Also, growing up I had a thing for Andie McDowell so glad Margaret Qualley is getting some more roles.

^^ Yes, I knew Qualley was her daughter and am hoping she does well.

Lanthimos has one other work (as director) in the pre-production pipeline that's been announced but with little information other than it's a remake project whatever that means. Emma Stone is currently rumored to be attached to that one but no other cast listed. The writers are Joon-Hwan Jang (Save the Green Planet) and Will Tracy (The Menu, Succession, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver). Lanthimos seems to select his projects thoughtfully so I'm keeping that one on my radar for further info when more time passes.
