Judson used to be the shit.

Final

Duncanville 42

DeSoto 20

Desoto had a little bit of life in the second half down 35-20 and in the redzone looking to score again. Then a high snap sailed over the QBs head and they lost a ton of yards. Ended up 3rd and a mile and the QB threw a desperation heave the next play that got picked off. Game over.

Judson and their “Diamond J,” was the staple in SA for almost three decades. Friends of my family have been on the FB staff from the ‘80s. Some of the staff members worked with/for my Dad’s coaching staff during the ‘70-early ‘80s. I have even travelled from Fort Sill to watch their playoff games in the early ‘90s. So sad what that program has become!

My Dad mimicked their off-season training program for our school in SETX and as a player, I hated him for that! Man time has flown by!

Brenham beat Waco 55-0 tonight.  It was 38-0 at the end of the first quarter and 52-0 at the half.  The TD to make it 38-0 was the 4th TD in 5 offensive plays for Brenham.  Pretty sure the cheerleaders played the whole 4th quarter.  I remember when Waco was a Cen-Tex powerhouse.  Things have really changed over there.

Furk, Harlingen is bad this year.  Losing 40-9 to a Brownsville school?  That’s a shit loss even though Vets had their run last year.  I wonder if Manny has it in him to do another run.

Part of it is the personnel.  Maybe in a couple years we can ride Woolery to greatness but this year the passing game is dead.

In the 1998 championship game, Judson pushed Duncanville's LOS around all day.  I am still trying to figure out how Duncanville won 24-21, and I say that as a Duncanville fan.

1995 Judson-Permian. One of the best state championship games ever.

It's sad. The district is struggling as a whole although it's slowly getting better.  Parents want their kids to go to Midway or China Spring. Connolly has put out the most D1 players over the last 5 years or so.

If I had to guess I'd say the most talented player in the area is London Smith, he's Rodney Smiths son and plays at Rodney's alma mater University. They're improved this year.

Midway hired Joe Gillespie and he seems to have turned things around halfway through his 1st season.  Of course China Spring has had a terrific run recently. La Vega has been good.

When I was a kid Tusa had terrific teams. Losing to Permian one year in the semis I believe. There's not a Louis Fite anymore.  Jay Johnson, Derrick Johnson, Kwame Cavil or Kevin Emmanuel aren't walking through that door anytime soon.

Waco ISD passed a $355 million bond a few years ago to build a new HS and rebuild some elementaries and a middle school. Some are already done and the HS should be finished this summer.  They're giant upgrades. But more is still needed.

I think only around 6k people voted but it got 60% of the vote. So there is some positive momentum.

The superintendent who passed that is retiring. They just hired her replacement . She needs to be a good hire because she will be fighting the normal battles any administrator fights plus dealing with huge budget deficit.

I've long been of the belief that the most important hire outside of mayor in Waco is the Waco ISD superintendent. Families have to be given a good reason to live in Waco and send their kids to Waco High.

Jmo.

My Dad’s DeSoto team scrimmaged against Waco University HS, ‘82 or ‘83. Before it even started there was a small scrum at midfield, where one of the Waco U players shouted, “We Ficking to hit!” I’ll never forget that, as a Jr High kid/manager for the varsity, I later asked Dad what “ficking” meant and he just said don’t worry about that. Enough said.

Woolery got hurt in the 2nd quarter and didn’t come back. The senior QB, bless his heart, might be the worst QB we’ve ever had. The offense is basically just pray Huerta can bust a long run. I don’t know if Woolery stays all 4 years, yeah his dad is the track coach but Bubba can not develop a QB or run a decent offense to save his life. Losing Randy Bermea as WR coach in the offseason hurt too. I think we’re looking at a 5-5 finish, team just isn’t good.

Freshman Hassan Woolery of Harlingen takes the snap and runs 61 yards to the house on his first ever high school play. Sark if you’re reading this offer the kid now.

Cards up on Weslaco 14-3 in the 2nd quarter.

They haven’t been the same since they finally had to divest themselves of the Super high school concept and with that came a lot of political infighting.   They had a few good seasons after they split students to Wagner, but then went down the tubes.    The only program that has seemed to defy the decline of Northeast San Antonio football is Cibolo Steele.   The days of Madison, Schertz Clements, Judson etc being mentioned in the top 10 in the San Antonio Metro might be long forgotten.

Judson and Madison used to be 2 of the biggest schools in the city back in their heyday. Judson close to (over?) 4000 and Madison about 3500 students. They’re both hovering around 2500 kids right now and have reputations as pretty rough schools. East Central area is booming right now but I’ll believe the benefit to their athletics program when I see it. Reminds me of when Del Valle was supposed to be the next big thing in Austin.

Yep.  Both Del Valle and East Central are benefitting from industrial growth in their boundaries but that does necessarily translate to academic or athletic transformation.

The first year of Consolidation of the three high schools was my senior year 1987.  The amount of talent on that team was crazy.  Led by Ted Long (future Sooner) but a really great guy.

Late-season Helo Poll:

1. PSJA North (6-0): They’ve been all business this year, methodically suffocating their opponents. Including a dominant win over Corpus Christi Vets.

2. Edinburg Vela (6-0): No Coach Campbell, no problem for the Sabercats

3. Los Fresnos (5-1): The most electric offense in the valley in my opinion

4. Brownsville St. Joseph (5-1): Perhaps one of the stories of the year in Texas HSFB. A school of only about 500 students, many of whom are Mexican nationals, football participation is lacking some seasons. With a varsity roster of roughly 25 players, and the majority of their starters playing on both sides of the ball, they have beaten teams with double the amount of players at their disposal, including 6A Brownsville Vets.

5. Brownsville Vets (5-2): Have hit their stride after a 2-2 start

Chingon Trophy Leaderboard

Robert Pineda, QB (JR): Los Fresnos - Only player in the valley top 10 in both passing and rushing yards, dude is dynamic with 25 total TDs

Claudio Torres, ATH (SR): St. Joseph - Travis Hunter but make him from Matamoros. Torres has 605 receiving yards, 727 rushing yards, 18 total TDs on offense and 3 INTs and a couple forced fumbles on defense.

Myles Lopez, QB (SR): PSJA - The valley’s leading passer is closing in on 2000 yards and searching for that second FBS offer.

Calvin Harris, QB (JR): Sharyland - Has 19 passing TDs and moonlights as one of the top producers and artists in the music industry today.

I was actually selling Torres short a bit:

Quote

On the ground, Torres slashed his way through the Tarpons’ defense on his way to 255 yards and four touchdowns, his second 200-yard performance of the season.
He added four catches for 77 yards through the air, including a 60-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown in which he weaved through almost the entire Port Isabel defense.
Torres’ big night brings him to 1,664 total yards and 23 total touchdowns on the season. Also, he has added 49 tackles, eight tackles for loss, three interceptions, three forced fumbles and one sack.

Great kid! I still remember when he showed up from Cancun with 2 other WRs. He was the only one to stay and worked his ass off since then, hopefully soon he starts to get some recognition outside of the RGV.

They’ll need to make some noise in the TAPPS playoffs for that to happen, which may be possible because they’re state ranked over there. He does have that teammate committed to UTEP so hopefully that gets him so looks. Not super impressive track times but he’s still a playmaker.

They’ll win district for sure. Last year we played 2nd Baptist outta HTown with a few D1 guys, so hopefully he’ll be able to showcase his talent along with Diego (OL).
His track times are off, he prefers soccer and for the past 2 years they’ll played for the state championship, cutting into track season.

Lampasas gets their big rival in Burnet tonight. Comes in 6-1 and would be 7-0 had QB Reed Jerome not gotten injured in the 2nd quarter against University. They lost that one 28-21 in the last 10 seconds on a TD pass for the Trojans. They would’ve boat raced University with Jerome out there.

Burnet is 5-2 and all I will say for them is it’s about to be 5-3 with another home loss to the Badgers.

I’m not sure the Badgers boat race The U with the QB at full health.  Don’t think London played at all so not sure how impactful that would have been.

When Jerome is out there Lampasas moves the football because of their size up front and ability to get yards on the ground with him. University’s front was getting gashed right up until Jerome got injured. The game plan changes with the WR having to play QB. Defensively Lampasas is still not up to snuff and just won’t be, but they would have gone well north of 40 on offense in that game with how limited the Trojans are in the defensive line. Jerome is a faster version of Stoever for Wimberley. Not amazingly accurate passing, but good enough.

I saw the game. It was even at half with him playing that half.  I’m not saying they don’t win but boat race and over 40.  Not so sure.

Crazy ending for Wakeland v Lone Star

Man when you blow that up full screen on a computer and slow it down sure looks like ball gets ripped out when QB is down on his back, but ain't no HS ref gonna see that and no replay.  That's a wild way to lose. 100 yard return by a DE.

That's reallly close.  The back judge was staring right at it, hopefully he saw it clearly.
