Bad teams have always made the playoffs. Every year when I played and then my brother after me we always had to hear about the 10-0 district champion El Paso team (Montwood or Del Valle) that this was their year! And every time we had our starters out before halftime and JV kids starting by the end of 3Q. Rinse and repeat with most panhandle and Valley schools, with the exception for those areas being the smaller classifications.

Lampasas should get the district champion from District 1 in the 2nd round. That’s a majority El Paso schools district. That would mean EP Austin in the 2nd round. That game I am guessing takes place in Midland/Odessa. 550 or so miles separate the two high schools. The travel logistics in the first two rounds can come across as nuts to me when I think that I can drive from NYC to the northern tip of Maine faster than driving entirely within the same state. At least this week Lampasas just has to go to Wall to play Pecos.

Back in the 80, the trips were to the Abilene area but never against El Paso schools from what recall.  That’s a tough haul and seems odd they play at a lower classification school this week.  Kinda crazy.

2003 North Crowley was 4-6 and won state. Back then only 3 teams made it to the playoffs and the biggest school out of 3 went Division 1, which was 1 less round.

They beat Arlington Heights, WF Rider, EP Riverside, Texas High and Bay City to win

I think that team was 6-4, not 4-6.

Texline to Port Isabel is 903 miles...

Anthony to Orange is 878 miles... just for fun.

I tell people that I made a few drives from Dallas to Los Angeles and that half of the drive was just getting out of Texas. I always felt bad for the small Class A far northern panhandle schools who would make it to the state basketball tournament when I used to go to it years ago in Austin. They would put the distance to Austin next to it in the program and one school had to drive 619 miles to lose an 8:30 in the morning game on Thursday. Now the trip would be even further for them having to go to San Antone.

Judson is losing to Steele 49-3 and will fall to 1-5 tonight. They seriously might never be good again. The football team and school are just dying, same for Madison & Roosevelt. Northeast SA just isn’t what it used to be.

Roosevelt freshman team finished undefeated this year and won the district. That hadn’t happened in well over a decade probably. There may be hope for northeast side football yet.

While Texas is large, I'd rather drive from New York to Maine, or New Mexico to California any day. Much of Texas is well, not much to look at.

Canyon West Plains and Clint are playing Thursday night in Artesia, NM.

Canyon Randall and El Paso Ysleta are playing Thursday in Hobbs, NM.

I always enjoy the out of state playoff games
