2024 Texas High School Football

Dickinson gave Atascosita all they wanted and then some. Cita wins 50-45. The Gators will break through one of these years. Single school district, large enrollment, good talent base, nice facilities, they have all the ingredients to be a Houston power.

Another fun one looking over the matchups:
10-0 Sinton vs 0-9 Rio Grande City Grulla Thursday in Falfurrias

Will good ol Bill In Sinton be in attendance with his focusness?

I talked to him one time on the phone years ago. He was a pleasant enough guy. I have another friend in Sinton that knows him as well.

This has been my 3rd straight year watching Dickinson since we moved to Texas City (daughter goes to Dickinson)... they have talent, just are missing a QB.. hopefully by the time my youngest daughter who will be a freshman there next season, graduates.. they will break through.  Two years ago.. they also had North Shore at their field sweating too til very late. #GATA

I think that Aguirre kid will be that guy. He's got the talent, I expect that soph to Jr level jump for him next year.

Unfathomable how they made those poor kids play on real grass...outdoors.

One of the things I really do like about my hometown is that Lampasas still uses the same field they have had that was built during the WPA-era in 1935. Generation after generation play on the same field. They also haven’t put artificial turf down like so many schools have opted to do. I do not believe they will ever leave that field for a new one or go away from natural grass.

I don't have a problem with artificial turf, especially as it alleviates the water usage to keep the grass green in some very, very dry areas in Texas.

I do believe high school football should be an outdoor game, including practice facilities.  I know I am probably in an extreme minority.

Worst part of that game was that it ended in a freaking tie.

There are definitely some areas in Texas that have to have those fields. I always worry about injuries on artificial turf though. I just do not seem to remember such a high incidence rate of ACL tears and similar injuries when more grass fields were in use.

Good thing for Tidehaven penetrations didn't count in the Championship game.  PP had 1 and THS had 0.  2 great defensive teams at the time.

It is not good. Good teams will shut us down, but looks great against bad teams.

This has been the concern since Dodge left.  Would they slowly get worse offensively (but not noticeably affect outcomes at first)?  This is what happened to LT.  The fear with a defensive minded coach is that offensive production is not the priority.  In Texas HS football, offense wins.

The Woodlands College Park beat Westfield yesterday.  Not bad considering how bad TWCP has been since forever.

College Park is the "Rice" of the Conroe schools, while all of those gifted athletes just magically appear in the Woodlands attendance zone.

Is it just me, or does our offense look…not good?

(Westlake Jr QB) Wise has not progressed at all - he's just a big kid with a strong arm who never checks off of the first option.   I thought that Wilhelm was going to be able to use his size to become a go-to receiver, but he's regressed throughout the season.  The only offensive player who has really stepped up is WR/RB Livingood.  We'll see if they can generate enough offense to get past Brennan.

lol. This is the worst Brennan team I’ve seen in the past few years. Their QB is a decent athlete who cannnot pass to save his life. Northside ISD football has gotten tragically bad lately, Brennan/Harlan/Sotomayor are the very last holdouts and beat up on the rest of the district. But it’s coming for them too. I imagine Westlake will be up 4 or 5 TDs at half.

Any info on SA Harlan… they’re 10-1, but I have no idea how good their competition is or what they have going on.

Their whole offense is that Trotter kid at QB. Like Brennan, they beat up on an incredibly weak NISD schedule, and Harlan’s only loss was a blowout to Brennan. Will be a cakewalk victory for Dripping springs

The Brennan feeders are looking great winning district titles. I hear there is some good young talent coming up.

They’ll definitely be the best northside school for a while. They’re capitalizing on the growth out there to a level that Harlan and Soto just aren’t.

The Northside feeder patterns are so scrambled now. Only 3 or 4 of the NISD high schools get 100% of at least one middle school (Brennan is one of them though). It’s a big reason why most of the schools struggle now imo. For example O’Connor draws partially from 4 different middle schools. Tough to build a program like that.

Thanks. It's difficult to compare teams when there's so few regular season comparison points. Drip - Buda Johnson - East Central - Harlan is the closest comparison and we all know the transitive property is unreliable.

I like Drip's chances and think they can probably beat the NB Canyon/Brownsville Vets winner if they get past Harlan.

6A-D2 Region 4 all comes down to Vandy vs. Steele next week.

From what I see in the area it has a large middle class black family base. If we're still living out here our kid would feed into it. But who knows where we will be in 15 years  or what the dynamics of SA will be....hell we might be in the suberb of Comfort, TX lol

Last long region I trip for Lampasas this week. They will meet Dumas in Andrews this Friday. Lampasas will drive 305 miles to get there and Dumas a little over 280. The next round should be in Waco with Brownwood the possible next opponent if they can beat West Plains. If not it’ll be a 3rd long bus ride. At least this year there will be no repeat of the bus driver completely screwing over any chance Lampasas had to win their 2nd round game last year against Alice by taking a route that put them squarely into rush hour traffic and got them to their game late. I think @4thand5 can tell this story better than I can as his father knows all those details.

An aside to this is in early June the entire Andrews High School band visited NYC and I took care of them. Really nice kids and probably the most well mannered group of people I have ever had. It’s rare to hear someone say yes sir and whatnot, especially a teenager. Those young Texans were really nice and so were the adults that came along with. I told them to watch out for Lampasas since they could meet in the playoffs, but they went and did every Badger fan a solid. They beat Burnet 35-21 last week. Any team that beats Burnet is a favorite of mine.

Brownwood in Waco seems odd.  But guess it’s neutral.

What year did you graduate?

Looking forward to Ridge Point vs North Shore this Friday night.  North Shore obviously the favorite and loaded team, but Ridge Point has a team this year that "maybe" gives them a chance. Their QB (UH commit) is a definite dual threat burner with tremendous moxie and accuracy.  Ridge Point will be able to score, question mark is on their defense holding up. I'm just not sure they can stop the North Short run game.

@Helobious  what the heck happened to Judson?     Even after the initial split, they were competitive.  I had someone tell me their game against in Buda against Buda Johnson,  Judson might’ve had 100 people in their stands.  That’s fricken unbelievable.   Reminds me of LaMarque and how they fell, but that’s because the TEA dissolved their ISD and merged it with Texas City.   Now what’s left of LaMarque High School is often on the other end of ass kickings.

School/community just died really. Their enrollment is down to 2500 or so and the area is tougher than it’s ever been. I imagine most of the legacy fanbase has moved away. You could see the cracks even during the mcaulfie runs 10 years ago, they were talented but played stupid and undisciplined. Soto has come in and purged the troublemakers but the talent/size level isn’t what it was. Made worse by the fact that he isn’t a very good coach. They do still have some studs but not like they used to.

Judson lost the continuity of their program roughly two decades ago. DW retired, a long time staff member and close friend of my family (Jeter) retired from coaching and became the JISD AD. Within years after that, the multiple HS additions diluted Judson’s reign on athletes in that area.

Multiple FB HC hires couldn’t bring it back to the “Diamond J” era. Even one of their former alumni is/was coaching (HC) at SA Johnson, instead of there.

As a former HSFB official, I’ve seen their decline firsthand over the previous decade. Having to do sub-varsity weekday games, I’ve witnessed the decline in JISD down to the JR High level.

When I first started officiating, I used to love doing a Judson vs Steele or Schertz Clem JV game on Thursday, as the speed of the game, even at that level, I was going to witness better athletes than my 2-3A game the next night. Hell, either of those JV squads would’ve beat both teams I officiated the next night.

Hook’em!!!

Hopefully none of the "too many teams make the playoffs" militia have seen the youth baseball thread and the 'championship ' rings 9, 10, and 11 year olds get for their valiant efforts in the 2024 Regional Last Chance Double Secret National Qualifier Select Extravaganza...there was technically a three way tie for second based on run differntial but since the rain wasn't stopping and it was 9:30 pm on Sunday the director really had no other choice but to declare everybody the winner. Oh well there's always next weekend in Orlando. Their private hitting coach said with a few extra lessons he'll be a shoo-in to make Jv as a sophomore at least. If not then that coach is an idiot and you and the wife should probably bite the bullet and put him in that private school where his uncle coaches. You can always prioritize the 401k later.

This post makes me simultaneously laugh my ass off at the pure truth dripping from the words.  Then again, I also feel like this guy at what has happened to (some) youth sports.

You forgot too mention the baseball moms who try to out do each other with $100k SUVs and boob jobs.

Say what you will, but there is probably no better business model in America than selling childhood dreams of future success to wealthy parents.
