2024 Texas High School Football

My nephew played varsity baseball there for 3 years so I keep up with their football team during the season. I can remember the shock from him and my BIL when they lost. Was it in the 3rd round? I am thinking we were together at thanksgiving.

Yessir. It was 2021 third round against South Oak Cliff. Aledo was driving to take the lead in the fourth and fumbled a snap on 4th and 1 with less than a minute.

Angleton to the next round

Bay City moving on

Silsbee will advance, barring some type of Devine Intervention from above

Tidehaven rolls on

Poth survives a scare from EB, and gets to fight on next week.

Tidehaven and Poth potentially could be matched up in 2 weeks.  Sumthin' gonna have to give.

How are all those 6’5” Dripping players doing? And that stout #18 at RB. That dude put some bruises on my kid last week.

Not well, Harlan played to stuff the run and pressure the qb and let the dbs match up 1-1. It worked.

Drip qb got hurt and the defense fell apart.

Defense has been the achilles heel all year.

Bay City vs Calallen next week.

Cal won their game 49-28 against Somerset.  It was 49-7 in the fourth before Somerset scored three garbage time TD’s.

PLC upset Davenport which some had winning the Region.   With both LBJ and Davenport gone, the Region is wide open for the team that is the hottest to take it.

West Plains pistol whipped Brownwood 49-14 and Lampasas won 55-21 against Dumas. That game was done again by halftime with a five touchdown second quarter by the Badgers. Stephenville beat the Whitefaces from Hereford on Thursday night 35-7. Stephenville should win handily again next week.

Lampasas is going to have to come out strong from the start next Friday. West Plains opened in 2022 so this is mostly new to them, but they have to be pretty good to put up half a hundred on Brownwood in a playoff game. Believe the game is being played at the Mustang Bowl in Sweetwater. Lampasas hasn’t gone this far in Region 1 since the state semi-final appearance in 3A while a part of district 8 that year. I still can recall listening to the radio broadcast from the playoff game that year against the Crane Golden Cranes. Lampasas kicked a 30 yard field goal as time expired to win 10-8. My parents were not taking us to the games as we were too young for my parents to want to drive my younger brother and I really far. I think that was the 3rd round game that year against Crane, but not entirely sure.

I went to check and it was indeed the 3rd round. If I could remember things that were actually important I’d have it made! 😂 Fun year until the state semis against Jefferson where we lost 26-0. Best season we had until the 2019 Ace Whitehead Experience got us so painfully close to being in the state title game.

The Calhoun game is a bit of a revenge after they lost to Davenport last year. Good on them for getting that win.

Overton 31 Mart 30

2015 is the last year the Panthers bowed out of the playoffs before Round 3. 'Twill be interesting to see if Kevin Hoffman is retained for the 2025 season, with rumblings about the relationship with the school board. He is 131-15-0, with State titles in 2017, 2018, & 2019. In only 3 of those 10 seasons at Mart, did the Panthers NOT go 10-0 in the regular season.  Those are crazy numbers.

Angleton and College Station A&M Cons. will play at Friday at 7 at Shenandoah Woodforest Bank Stadium.

Shooting from the hip here, but since Van Vleck is on one side of the county and Tidehaven sits on the other I'd say Bay City will be the host site.

Cream will start rising to the top after this week.

Haha sounds like the oilers vs bills from the 90’s. How the fuck are you good enough to score 45 points in 2 qtrs but bad enough to give up 42 the next 3 and not score again. Crazy.

Georgetown has junior Lampasas transfer Jett Walker at RB. He had over 2200 yards and 35 TD’s (36 total with a TD catch) going into the game. Can’t imagine how he and his teammates have to feel waking up today from that nightmare.

My buddy has a son on the Reedy team, so he was at the game.  Georgetown got a FG on its opening drive.  Reedy then scored a TD on its opening drive.  So it’s 7-3 Reedy.

Georgetown then scores the next 42 points and is up 45-7 midway through the second quarter, he said.

Then Reedy scores 42 unanswered points and wins.  Holy shit.

Reedy plays Highland Park on Friday night at The Star.

What amazes me is that Georgetown even had that many possessions before the half. I’d really like to know more about this game. Sounds to me like Georgetown landed some haymakers and their defense followed up with either forced turnovers or quick 3’s-and-outs. Sounds like they followed all that with the 1994 John Tyler “take the starters out so they can take off their pads and interact with the spectators” approach to the second half.

We’re all pretty disappointed in the outcome here. My dad and my godfather went to Georgetown and we’ve never played against those motherfuckers in football.

Oh well. In the first round of the playoffs I went to watch my nephew play in his first playoff game for WT White, who lost to Lone Star. Went to the Highland Park game last night against Wakeland and will likely attend the Reedy game. Nothing but Frisco folk on the other side of the stadium in these damn playoff games I attend this year.

Here’s what he said:

Quote

For Georgetown’s big run it was a fumble by us a pick six a long kickoff return.  We didn’t have many spectacular plays just meticulously driving down the field.  Never experienced momentum like that.

Lancaster has a lot of talent year to year but their coaching staff leaves a lot to be desired. They were terrible in situational aspects tonight.

Yeah Longview got extremely lucky. Lancaster gave that game away with some boneheaded plays

I have family at Mart. They called it back in Sept.  This was gonna be a short year for them.

Short year for Mart=/= getting blitzed in a District game and two weeks later losing to a 2nd place District finisher in the playoffs.

Short year for Mart means losing in the semis.

Los Fresnos hanging tough with Buda Johnson. 20-20 in the 4th

Johnson wins 23-20. Frustrating/kind of impressive week for the valley schools, a couple blowouts but then 3 losses by a combined 9 points. Biggest shocker was Weslaco only losing by 7 to a really explosive East Central team. No one is left from down there. SA Southwest is the last team standing to represent the homies.

Notes for Week 3 of the Playoffs, one game of interest per class

6AD1: Katy vs North Shore @ NRG

6AD2: Longview vs Klein Collins @ Abe Martin in Lufkin( That would be like Texas playing IDK, any random school, at Norman.)

5AD1: Aledo vs Amarillo Tascosa @ Snyder.  Might not be a great game, but thought Tiger Stadium was an unusual venue for them

5AD2: Texarkana Texas High vs PNG @ Natchitoches, LA

4AD1: Lampasas vs Canyon West Plains @ Mustang Bowl in Sweetwater.  Weird that Lampasas is Region 1, and the Mustang Bowl is a unique  stadium from before the high dollar monstrosities dotted the landscape of Texas High School football.

4AD2: Region 3 all have 3 losses with Gatesville at 5. Best matchup in that class is likely Wimberly vs Cuero, from Region 4.

3AD1: Malakoff vs Jefferson @ TMF Rose Stadium in Tyler.  Both 12-0.

3AD2: Poth vs Lexington @ Bastrop

2AD1: Ganado vs Refugio @ Port Lavaca

2AD2: Somerville vs Junction @the Pfield.  I just think the Yeguas is a fantastic mascot, and Somerville hasn't won a lot through the years.

1AD1: Newcastle vs Westbrook. Westbrook won their Round 2 game 116-110 over Robert Lee

1AD2: Loraine vs Benjamin@ Hamlin.  The Mustangs are 2 time defending state champs, lose 3time POTY in Grayson Rigdon, and keep on truckin.

In Round 3, there are 15 teams with 4 losses still in play.

There are 4 teams with 4 losses: Klein Collins, Amarillo Tascosa, Daingerfield, & Kerens

There is ONE team with 5 losses remaining:  Van Vleck

Katy with 3,330 students unable to hide in D2, like they sometimes get away with.

@blacklab here is the entire Los Fresnos/Buda Johnson game distilled down to 30 minutes for you to get a preview of what we face this Friday.

Johnson, who earned their second-ever playoff win, has a tough little running back named Hadnot who seems to touch the ball on around 70% of plays. The QB is tall and has a nice arm, but they are definitely a running team. I didn't see any of those nice, soft punt snaps that Westlake loves to turn into our signature blocks.

I like Buda Johnson. They seem to have wrested control away from Hayes HS for the best program in their area. It seems only yesterday (but was probably around 10-15 year ago) that Hayes was running across the field with their Confederate battle flags while playing 'Dixie'. That's one tradition I don't miss.

I think Brennan would have smoked Buda Johnson and don't expect much of a contest, but that's why they play the game!

PNG vs Texas High in Natchitoches (pronounced Nak-ee-tush), Louisiana?  Pretty rare to see a Texas high school football game played in another state.  About a 3 hour drive from each high school, which is actually less than many teams have to travel for the state playoffs in Arlington.

by the way - I couldn't believe how they pronounce the town there - a little different than their Texas cousin...

We played a baseball tournament there during the pandemic when Texas wouldn’t let us. Small university there. A couple of nice mom and pop pizza joints. Only shitty motels.

SFA must not be renting its stadium for some reason this playoff season (they often hoist a ton of games)  so it’s the second best spot since Able Martin is already booked

Legend has it that Natchitoches and Nacogdoches were twin Caddo Indian brothers that settled in those areas to raise their own tribes.

Steel Magnolias , which I've never seen, was filmed in Natchitoches.  Northwestern State is located there also. Had a buddy at UT from there that I learned this Cliff Clavenesque facts from.

I had no idea you guys were that unathletic. I was expecting a dripping springs team like the one a couple years ago, I would’ve altered my prediction some had I known. Still wouldn’t have thought Harlan would utterly dominate like they did.
