Definitely no Klubnik, Greathouse, Burke or even Taeaffe on this team.

Looks like we’re back to the Long and Allman days. About 3-4 players going to military academies, Duke and smu types with like 2-3 walking on at Texas.

What happened to little Vasek? Remembering hearing from some Westlake folk he was even better than Colton.

Though Reese Wise seems like an interesting prospect. He’s certainly gotten better in the pocket and the dude can run. If he can learn how to read a defense I can see him at tech or tcu or something.

It was clear this DeSoto team wasn’t as good as the last couple of years, especially defensively. But I’m still surprised to see them lose by this much. Absolute demolishing.

They would win the D2 title this year imo. This is the weakest 6AD2 bracket I’ve seen in a while.

A little early to be pencilling in Duncanville. They’ve got their hands full with NC

Maybe, but I’ll take Duncanville by three scores. North Crowley has a great team but think t they’re getting a lot of hype for beating Desoto who wasn’t as good as many thought this year.

Conner Vasek got injured fairly early in the season and has not seen that much of the field.  He's one of the guys headed to Air Force.

Wise throws a nice ball from a clean pocket to an open receiver.  He rarely looks to the second option and he doesn't have much wiggle or speed as a runner, but he's a decent power runner for a QB.  I've been discouraged by his lack of decision making development through the season.   I expect he'll get some recruiting attention to a second- or third-tier school just based on arm and size.  I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him end up as a TE at the next level.

Fwiw, I don't see any interesting walkons coming out of this WL team.

Lol at Westlake fans complaining about only having 4-5 college players on the roster, even at an academy or walk-on level. The majority of high school teams have one player of that caliber a year if they’re lucky. By my count my old high school (6A mind you) has had 3 guys play college football in the past 5 years combined. 2 D3 players and one current walkon at Texas State

From the time I was in 6th grade through senior year, my school had one guy go play DT for TCU and another go the West Point that never played. A third if you count that there was a freshman my senior year who also played DT for TCU before getting kicked off the team for roids.

In that time span we beat Art Briles Stephenville, Todd Dodge's Carroll and Grapevine the year after they won state

Yeah, I'm sure they regret those back-to-back 6A state titles. `

Desoto has 3 titles since moving to 6A.  I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he meant Division 1, but even then that's a bad statement.

Desoto thumped Duncanville last year and had the best team in the state regardless of class or division.  They will remain very competitive in D1.

You can’t choose what division you play in, that’s determined by final district standings. Desoto was 6A by enrollment until this most recent realignment, where they foolishly opted to stay in 6A. They’ve experienced almost unheard of enrollment loss in recent years (3300 students as recently as 2016 vs 2100 and now). Their days of being a power are over unless they move down to 5A next realignment.

That's what I thought.....I thought this realignment was the 1st time they dipped to 5a enrollment numbers wise but opted up. In the past they've always had 6a numbers, yeah?

How’d they lose so many?

Correct. I imagine it was a country town at some point like the rest of that area but it’s probably been in the highest class since the 90s or early 00s

No idea. Duncanville next door has maintained their 4500 student enrollment for a long time, Cedar Hill also next door has a smaller declining enrollment but has pretty much been the same for a while too. Both those schools have relatively similar demographics as Desoto so it’s not that. I imagine Desoto’s uniquely poor academic performance has a lot to do with it.

It’s hard to nail down a single reason, could be declining birth rates, gentrification, decline in new housing being built, charter schools (this would be my top guess for DeSoto.)

Cedar Hill got hit pretty hard too, but they’ve always been a small 6A school, and they still hung on to 6A numbers this cycle. No one got hit harder than DeSoto.

Duncanville’s district includes a lot of Dallas (always has) and that might be preventing them from the same fate. They’ve had huge demographic shifts, but not student population loss.

The weird thing for me is that Lancaster high school grew, you’d think they’d be in a similar place as DeSoto and Cedar Hill, but they had to move up classifications.

That's actually is surprising. You see players moving around much more these days to the better teams. Guess Westlake needs more affordable housing or apartments....

Red Oak is the missing piece of this puzzle. I worked in the area from 2016-2019. The high school is a fucking palace and new builds were popping up like weeds

Very good point. People are moving further south where there’s plenty of space for affordable housing. Red Oak has exploded and they have to be taking some kids from the DeSoto/Cedar Hill southwest Dallas county area.

Not sure the start of the exact time frame you’re referencing but aren’t you leaving off a MLB who went to Air Force Academy? Edit: he went to West Point. For some reason I thought it was AFA.

The first DT you’re referencing was a great guy. I got to know him pretty well his Freshman/sophomore years at TCU. One night we were working at one of the bars on Exchange and noticed someone couldn’t parallel park a Ford Ranger. He walked over and literally dead lifted the truck one end at a time and placed it correctly in the spot. Also, y’all lost to Castleberry lol. Edited by Fudbelty

Really curious about Duncanville vs North Crowley. Both teams have been on a collision course to meet again. Duncanville blew them out last year in this round. North Crowley beat Desoto in a shootout in the first of the season. Both teams have talent and speed all over the place. Hopefully it's a closer game than last year.

What the hell is Canyon West Plains

The newest high school in the Canyon ISD, situated just south of Amarillo.  West Plains High is actually on the SW side of Amarillo.  They play their home games at Happy State Bank Stadium, AKA Kimbrough Stadium, former home of the West Texas A&M Buffaloes in Canyon.  The City of Canyon is named for Palo Duro Canyon, which is just to the east of town.  FYI- before you start in on the name, it's a lot more canyon related than some of the other "Canyon" named schools in Texas

So Westlake, with 2700 students, plays North Shore (4,600 students) or if we somehow win, maybe Duncanville (4,500). Obviously, Westlake has financial resources that neither school can match, but money can only get you so far when it comes to actual numbers. The system isn't working for us.

Enrollment doesn’t tell the whole story at all. I’d be shocked if Westlake didn’t have the largest football program by number of players out of all 3 schools. Duncanville has a slight majority of Latino students while North Shore is over 70%. Devin Sanchez notwithstanding that’s a demographic that does not really come out for football at those schools.

Westlake does have a huge number of players in their system and we have supporting families w money and can focus on off-season strength programs, private coaching etc, but there is a visible size discrepancy between our players and theirs especially with the lines. We just can't match their physicality just as so many schools can't match ours. For the last two years, they have worn us down in the second half.

Guess I’ll be going to the Longview game. Got bailed last week by the gf’s daughter not performing so I didn’t “have” to go. How good is South Lake Carrol this year? Longview is playing with house money because they should’ve lost to Lancaster 3 weeks ago

I still have Westlake winning this weekend. NS is not as good as last year and still has the same uncreative attack on offense. I have a hard time imagining that working on Westlake for 3 straight years. I do think Duncanville wins it all though.

North Shore has 2 JV teams and 3 9th grade teams.  They have large participation numbers.  Westlake has 2 JV teams and 2 9th grade teams.

Well, to counter this, a lot of people don't recognize Westlake's underrated diversity - they're roughly 50% female.
