They said a stat during the broadcast that I could hardly believe.  North Crowley only punted 7 times all season.

16 games, 7 punts.

Hopefully if this continues they’ll move it out of there at least every once in a while

ARLINGTON — For the second straight year, attendance fell for the UIL football state championship games at the Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium.

One highlight was that Southlake Carroll’s 24-17 loss to Austin Vandegrift in Saturday’s Class 6A Division II state title game had 26,247 fans and outdrew six of the first eight college bowl games through Friday, not counting Notre Dame vs. Indiana in the College Football Playoff. So did North Crowley’s 50-21 win over Austin Westlake in the 6A Division I final that had a crowd of 36,120, the most of any of the title games.

But the total attendance for the 10 11-man state finals this week was 159,560 after last year’s total was 193,776. Not counting the pandemic season in 2020, when the UIL limited crowd sizes, the 11-man state title games had drawn more than 200,000 fans every year since 2016 until 2023.

Tell Jerry, even though the discount he gives the UIL, he needs to reduce prices on concessions and parking for the weekend. He should also let people that purchase Saturday game tickets or the previous days to leave and come back in for a later game.

Being a “hostage” and feeding a family of four for three games is worse $$$ wise than attending a Cowboys game!

Fat chance that happens.  The UIL has their lips so attached to Jerry’s ass on this.

This has been the case for three seasons now.  Three years ago, Duncanville dominated them at the LOS in the state championship game.  That was the first time in forever I saw NS get whooped in the trenches.

They went from being big, strong and athletic at the LOS to fat and slow.  That's not a good direction to be heading.

Said it earlier in the thread but they are done once the last of Kay’s players are out of the program. Which I believe was this season if not next

uil state finals up against 4 college playoffs and 2 nfl games is going to need a reckoning......

they are going to have to finish a week earlier so the finals are only up against army-navy

hs games are not money-makers for 95% of schools so they need to cut a game from the regular season so the finals get maximum viewers

deathstar parking needs to be free and cut the price of concessions by half at least

otherwise go to a 3-year rotation with the alamodome and nrg

Y’all have this debate every year. The last time NRG had the state championships they charged more than triple the amount to host than Jerryworld did. Until that changes, NRG is not getting the games again. It’s a simple money issue.

I agree that concessions suck, I assume that’s how Jerry makes some of his money back after offering a discount to host. The bill gets passed down to us.

Having the 1A-3A games there was always stupid. The atmosphere would be so much more better in a smaller stadium for those small school teams.

Expand

The atmosphere isn't better when you're in games that are 30 degrees, rainy, etc.

Having controlled environment and replay capabilities in the biggest games of their season is far superior than watching Muenster and Shiner playing at Waco ISD or McLane Stadium or having Malakoff/Columbus playing at Kyle Field or Cy-Fair ISD stadium.

Technically it's next year, but really it is this year. They lose the standout talent this year. "Recruiting" hasn't kept up, especially when they got sloppy under the new coach and got caught this past year.

big news from down the coast ....

BREAKING: Calhoun Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Richard Whitaker has turned in his retirement paperwork after 20 years with the district. Whitaker said he plans to finish the spring semester. The district has posted the job and will seek Whitaker’s replacement.
“I love the Black and Gold and thoroughly enjoyed my time here,” Whitaker said. “I love Calhoun. This is my home.”
Upon his retirement, Whitaker ranks 20th in the state of Texas active wins list, with 191 career wins.
Under his guidance, the Sandcrabs won 7 district titles, 9 Area championships, reached the State quarterfinals 4 times and the State semifinals once. The Crabs averaged 8 wins per year during his 20 years at Calhoun.

He took a true bottom feeder and made them competitive big time.   That Triple Option was hard to defend.  Very few stopped it when they had the right personnel to run it.  Most slowed it down and took advantage of one or two mistakes to win against them.

The sandcrabs!  They kind of sucked when we played them in high school.  And their field really was all sand.

Maybe they saw Willis make the turn, and have hope... I doubt Michael Bishop or DJ Lagway are walking through them doors though.

I’m 3 years he won nearly as many games as North Crowley had won in the previous 16 years combined

  Quote

North Crowley went 12-1 in his first season, followed that with a 14-1 record in 2023 and finished undefeated (16-0) for the first time in school history this season.

Prior to Gates' arrival, the Panthers were 50-113 over the previous 16 years.

That's amazing. Similar to the turnaround Longhorn Joey Florence set in motion at Denton Ryan. The school had 13 wins in school history and he proceeded to win 12+ per season (2 state titles and twice runner-up) for his first 5 seasons. The opening of Guyer HS caused a talent drain for a few years before they regrouped for another run.

Many would like to have D Ryan’s success over the previous decades. It’s happened to others as towns/school districts have grown and the Goliath is taken down a notch or two with the addition of newer schools within the district. Converse Judson (SA) is a prime example! Hell they can barely make the playoffs now with .500 teams getting in.

Kevin Hoffman resigns at Mart, after years of brilliant success, including a 3 year run of State Championships in 2017-18-19. Mart also qualified for the State Final in 2020, 2022, & 2023.  Until this season, the Panthers had won 28 straight playoff games in their Region. Hoffman's record in 10 seasons at Mart was 130-16-0. Two games that were unusual this season were the close of the regular season, a 46-0 loss at Goldthwaite, the only District loss Mart had since Hoffman's initial season in 2015, in which they lost to eventual state semi-finalist, Crawford, 21-0. Mart's final game this  season was an Area round loss to a District runner-up, Overton, 31-30; the Panthers' first loss before the Semifinal round since 2016.  That's one hell of a run and a dramatic drop-off in a season in which Mart returned 8 starters on both sides of the ball from a State Finalist squad in 2023.
2015 Mart  8-3
2016 Mart 12-1
2017 Mart 15-1*
2018 Mart 15-1*
2019 Mart 13-3*
2020 Mart 14-1
2021 Mart 14-1
2022 Mart 15-1
2023 Mart 15-1
2024 Mart 9-3

Hoffman had a great run for sure. Mart is one of those places that has always won and won big. He is the 4th different coach to have won a state championship there and the Panthers have 40 seasons of 10+ wins. So whoever replaces him better win right away
