They really take the enemy of my enemy is my friend to a different level.  It's like 8 different spider mans pointing to each other meme.  To top that off. I wonder how stable the alliance between the House of Saud and the Wahabs are.  Bin Salman has to be walking real tight rope right now with those Wahabbis.

He can pay them off. "fuck with me, no Mecca." His tightrope is more with the people who don't get paid off but kind of do all the shit in the country. Ya know, like the military.

The Wahabbis loved when KSA attacked Yemen. He can appease them by declaring a holy war to defend Mecca and Medina. I mean, they hate the Shia more.

I like the payoff thing.  It reminds me of the time I went to Saudi lite(Qatar).  Did some research on them and the reason they are still the ruling party is because everyone is getting paid.  300,000 citizens.  Each person gets a mid 6 figure salary a year by virtue of being a citizen.  The other 3 million are basically slave labor from around the world.  They are some vice-y motherfuckers for being devout Muslims.

UAE... If you are from the right tribe, no worries. In the neighborhood I lived in expats would comment why a lot of the houses were not finished. Reason? Well you don't pay taxes until they are finished. So the plans say 3 stories, well just don't build the third.

Also, if you are a minor member of the ruling family in Dubai your credit is paid off. Yep, by a new BMW, get a flat in Chelsea? No worries, be nice to the Sheik and your bills get covered. Does not apply to everyone, but from second cousins out it does.

But getting back to the Houthis, you think there's any winnable situation out of this?  I honestly don't.  No one has the heart to invade right now.  And then even if we decide to invade and beat them.  Then what?  They have learned the Talibans playbook.  Just wait us out.  We will leave eventually.

Maybe, or we could try something different. Yemen has always been a failed state. Armed backed development works if we do not upset cultural norms. Saudi's and the UAE just attacked and killed a ton of people. I would take the port, secure it, and push in humanitarian assistance. We have tried this before but we do not coordinate well. Bring in a third country, say Rwanda to run convoy escort. Incorporate the Use US assets as oversight, command and control and a hammer. I know this sounds like Somalia, but we should have stayed and been smarter. Blackhawk Down is an anomally, not a norm.

Oh, and the same for Haiti. We sit in barracks, pay a ton to the "UN Allies" and try to change nations to look like us. It was a major issue in Afghanistan. Maybe we need a thread about this.

So back to Yemen. There is more than just the Houthis. Look up the reports on famine, health, etc. Neither group gives zero fucks about the population.

A law professor looks at the legality of the US retalitory strikes

https://reason.com/volokh/2024/01/12/does-biden-need-congressional-authorization-for-his-strikes-against-the-houthis/

tldr;

Quote

In sum, there is likely solid legal justification for US strikes against the Houthis—at least so far. I  have been highly critical of previous military actions that lacked proper constitutional authorization, such as Barack Obama's 2011 intervention in Libya (which lacked congressional authorization, and was not a response to attack). But this case is different.

The attack (and this comes after Pakistan and Iran have been launching missiles into each other’s territory).

As I stated previously, the use of Ballistic Missiles against Al-Asad Air Base in Western Iraq today is a Serious Escalation by Iranian-Backed Forces that Crosses a Major Red-Line set by U.S. Defense Officials and the Biden Administration; there will likely be a Significant Response to this Action, but whether it will be against just Iranian-Backed Forces in Iraq and Syria or also the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iran is not yet known.

https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/20/politics/al-asad-air-base-iraq-us-personnel-injured/index.html

Quote

US personnel were injured in a ballistic missile attack on Al-Asad Air Base in Iraq on Saturday, two US officials said. The attack resulted in minor injuries, the officials said, though it was not immediately clear how many personnel had been injured.

US Central Command confirmed the attack Saturday evening and said in a statement that “a number” of US personnel are being evaluated for traumatic brain injuries.

Quote

Multiple ballistic missiles and rockets targeted the base and, while most were intercepted by the base’s air defenses, some made impact, the CENTCOM statement said.

The use of more powerful ballistic missiles, far rarer than rockets or one-way attack drones, comes at a time of growing tension in the region as the Israel-Hamas war passes 100 days.

Iran is escalating. Don’t know what their end game is, but it’s most likely going to involve plenty of dead Iranians and probably some blown up Iranian infrastructure.  We could legit hit those Iranian factories and it’d be killing two birds with one stone - shutting off supply of missiles hitting our forces, as well as Israeli forces, and would hurt Russia’s missile supplies.

Lot of soft US targets around the world. Al-Quds is what we need to worry about, not their rockets. Oh, my IKEA shipment is a week late.....

I don't get it.  JDAMs are cheaper but we're using Tomahawks because they're cool?

Pretty much.  There’s a lot of grumbling in the military/OSINT social media that JDAMs should have been used and save Tomahawks for contested skies, and that CentCom just couldn’t help themselves.

Tomahawks are leased from Raytheon.  We don't get billed for it unless we shoot it.  Either some admiral got promised a cushy defense contractor job if we shot them or they were going to have go through recertification and Raytheon promised an admirals brother a cushy defense contractor job.  Either way Raytheon is winning this war.

Raytheon wins all the wars. Always has, always will. Whether by Raytheon or another name.

My armchair leadership, tells me that all Iranian ships should be removed from service. First with a warning to return to port, then sinking or seizing everything else. Same for the Houthi. Not even fishing boats tolerated.

So again.  How hard are these launch sites to find and blow up.  Do they shoot/scoot?  Are there too many to substantially destroy?  Are there more coming in from Iran?  Should America be embarrassed of this?

I mean, that's been my question for a while.  China's economy is the one that is most at risk from yet another interruption in the global supply chain.  Their inaction up to this point hasn't been consistent with the risk they face.

The Tomahawks have stand off range, they would have to fly closer to drop JDAMs.

If they're >20,000 feet, they're gonna be safe from MANPADS and I'd imagine they could just do a SEAD with the Tomahawks and then send in the gravity-powered weapons

The Iranians have given them missile AA systems, and I don't think we have any convenient airbases nearby. With the carrier closer to the Gulf, ship launched cruise missiles were probably the efficient choice.

Yeesh if we are being bitches about flying F-18s against a bunch of amateurs then that definitely means we don't have the resolve to launch airstrikes against Iran.  If we are being that big of bitches.  Just bring everyone home
