Credit to a tweet I saw that I thought was fitting for this game.

8PM tonight on ESPN at NRG

Okie State -3 with an o/u at 54.  Robinson with one foot out the door coaching for aggy, and most of the OSU team seems motivated. Gundy can hit 10 wins for the 9th time in his 19 year career.

A&M has won 10 games 12 times in its entire history stupid sip! Advantage aggy

Starts off saying it was Thurman Thomas and Barry Switzer at RB

Finally by the 5th reply an ag with a functioning memory shows up and sets the record straight.  Of course as of this posting they still haven't connected the dots that Gundy was the Cowboy QB that day

Jesus it’s not often you get to witness dementia in written exchanges. Truly amazing in the age of Google.

NIL was a different form back then? Barry's only other scholarship offer from what we now call the P5 was Iowa State. Even if you try to apply the NIL/Portal era, Barry's only big year was 1988 and went pro the next year. He played behind Thurman in '87 and had like 600 yards and probably wouldn't be big on the NIL/Portal radar of major programs. Not to mention we just retained Ollie Gordon, this year's Doak Walker winner, and he obviously could have made NIL bank somewhere else, so we at least have NIL capabilities to compete on retaining our own players.

I think Thurman Thomas was recruited by UT and some other big programs, but they wanted to move him to defensive back, he went to OSU because they gave him a shot at RB. It seemed to work out for us.

Fuck aggy.

I'll give Aggie credit.  A lot of SEC teams play "down" in a bowl game, lose, and claim afterwards, "Well, we didn't really want to be there so..."  In this case, 40 Aggie scholarship players said, "No, we literally don't want to be there" and caught the last fanboat outta the bayou...

I don't disagree in general, but I'm curious what specifically you're referring to. That he cheated and got caught? Everyone cheated, we were just particularly bad at it. Because we didn't win enough with those talents? The rest of the roster was still not great. Pat Jones is a radio host here and has told the story a few times that when we hosted recruits we showed them everything on campus, except the stadium. We were terrible, our facilities were terrible, and the administration barely gave a shit. The fact that we had that little run in the 80's was pretty surprising because we struck on Barry and Thurman and Gundy was a good QB. I think Gundy was recruited by OU but chose OSU, I always assumed because he either didn't get a formal scholarship offer or because he knew he could start right away at OSU.

Going into this season I thought aggy was going to be a mess.  I couldn't have imagined this level of self destruction.  I would have laughed someone out of the room if they would have described all the shit that has happened.  I can't wait to watch them get completely dismantled by the mullet.

Quote

Gundy had been committed to Oklahoma and coach Barry Switzer for about two weeks after making a visit to Norman. The Sooners were coming off a national championship in 1985, when dynamic freshman Jamelle Holieway took over at quarterback, running the wishbone after Troy Aikman broke his leg earlier in the season. Aikman moved on to UCLA, and Gundy began having second thoughts about whether Oklahoma was right for him.

Pat Jones, then Oklahoma State's coach, talked Gundy into taking a visit to Stillwater.

"Which was unheard of back then, because once you committed to Coach Switzer, that was it," Gundy said this week. "But I just started thinking, 'Gosh, even if I'm a really, really good player, how am I ever going to get Jamelle Holieway off the field?' Switzer was a powerful person in this state, and I still don't know where I came up with the courage, for lack of a better term, to come up here and visit."

Been a lot of posts around here expecting OSU to blast aggy. I have the same hope. But, aggy may only have 55 players, and OSU settled on a QB and Gordon after early season struggles, but those blowout losses to 6-6 South Alabama and 6-6 UCF still happened. OSU is in that no win situation of supposed to win so do so and no one cares, but lose to depleted aggy and it's a disaster.

When Barry Switzer is able to point out your short comings it's not a good situation ;-)

Yes, we're capable of being pretty good or really terrible. With the break to get healthy and prepare for a coachless team with 55 scholarship players, I think we win. We rarely blow people out so I'm not predicting that, but I think it's far more likely we blow them out than we lose by any margin. True it's a no win situation, but a bunch of bowl games are like that now with transfers and opt-outs.

Ah, ok. I guess "he should have benched Thurman Thomas" isn't something I think of or hear too often. I think Switzer is way overexaggerating that story, it's consistent with his entire persona. I remember he said he came up with this after Sanders had two long kick returns a few weeks earlier. Not exactly a sure thing at the time that Barry would be the best of all time.

Pretty sure the NFL has proven you can utilize two backs without benching one or the other.  My great aunt who graduated from OSU back when it was still Oklahoma A&M sat me down in the summer of 1988 as I was getting ready for 5th grade and she told me I had to watch Barry Sanders play football this year "because he was going to win the Heisman" and so I did exactly that and became an OSU fan and Lions fan (next to the Longhorns & Oilers).  Anything my great aunt told me after that regarding sports I took as the gospel truth so clearly the signs were there he was going to be great regardless of Barry Switzer.

This is fucking awesome.  They've long since banned my myriad IP addresses and cell phone number over at TexAgs, so would do it myself and take the heat.  But can somebody please post this over there?  I'm sure many have already seen it, but make it the last thing they see at 4:59 before they clock out from their shift and head out to watch the game.

Not sure why that is, he’d fit right in there.

We recruit heavily out of the Houston area and aggy has long paid players (before it was legal) and are notorious for negative recruiting. I also haven't seen Gundy on the sidelines goose stepping or squeezing his nuts, so he's not exactly a good fit.

He’s a dipshit redneck.  He would adapt very quickly.

Man this is a missed opportunity for aggy.  They should have picked an athletic kid off campus who played HS football and put him in on one play in kick coverage where their kicker boots it through the end zone. They’d have been masturbating for years to have the legend of the 12th man alive and well in 2023.

I said before our game that Gordon struggled some down the stretch because he was banged up and overused.  He will go off tonight after having almost a month off.

Fun fact of the day....

Oklahoma State has more bowl wins (21) than Texas A&M (20) despite playing in 9 fewer bowls over the years and despite Oklahoma State being 10% of A&M's all time bowl win total.

That fact WAS fun.

I take offense to the title of this thread. There's only one Red River Shootout and this ain't it...

Maybe... "The Winstar World Casino & Resort Clash of the Klans" or something...

Winstar Manager, "And we're running a special for you Aggie fans after the game.  At our fantastic Blackjack tables if you buy insurance, in honor of your great tradition, we'll allow you to double-down on 12!  So just like the transfer portal, allows to take your MACtion.   Er, I mean ACtion!"
