Speaking of enshittification, I received an email notice that my Amazon package had been delivered to my mailbox, which is one of those freestanding ones with boxes for about 15 homes.

Of course, there was no package.  Told the Amazon vendor and then went to the post office in person to let them know. Past experience told me the carrier probably put it in the wrong box. With me standing there, the post office guy conformed it had been delivered to the box and told the person on the route to go back and check. She never did.

So then I filed an online form. Two days later, nothing. So I got fed up and the next day stalked the neighborhood until I found the postal truck, followed it to our common mailbox area, and then flagged the carrier when she got out of the truck.

I told her the package was lost, and she said she’d already looked for it and didn’t find it. So I told her to specifically look in the box with the numerical address but one street over. Of course, there it is.

So think about the number of instances of mistakes. Three at least, and I have to go find my own effing packages. Ridiculous.

Cock ring eh?

Meta is betting that characters generated by artificial intelligence will fill its social media platforms in the next few years as it looks to the fast-developing technology to drive engagement with its 3bn users. The Silicon Valley group is rolling out a range of AI products, including one that helps users create AI characters on Instagram and Facebook, as it battles with rival tech groups to attract and retain a younger audience.

I firmly believe that all of generative AI is complete bullshit and on balance has made anything it touches worse.  Also, we are on our way to making Dead Internet Theory a reality.

generative ai is still just 1s and 0s. because it's based on a yes no dynamic it can't actually generate anything

Ho ho holy shit, this is some dystopian shit. We need laws against that sort of use of likeness

The intelligence level of the person who did this is the same as the people who used to do those “fill out and tag friends” posts where you were supposed to list your first car, mother’s maiden name, year you graduated high school, etc.

I didn't think it was trademark - the university didn't take the site down because of the "Bevo" in the name. It was because the former owner made a shit business deal with a scumbag and got fucked over after the fact.

The site was lost because the shitty business deal person successfully argued in court to a judge that shaggy was worth $350,000, based on Blacklab saying it was worth "tree fiddy" on a reddit AMA

Those are two different episodes, that you are commingling, beside this site sucks not because of those events but because of the assholes who post here.

Google protests Microsoft's abuse of users, right after it decides to abuse users.

I'm shocked how many people still use google and/or bing. They should both be measures of last resort.

At least in its current form (Transformer architecture at massive scale trained on stolen content), GenAI reminds me of Block Chain…a solution to a particular type of problem, requiring shit-loads of expensive compute to execute efficiently, and thus cost-recovery drives business to expand applications of it or follow the tech hype cycle to extremes.

So like Block Chain, “AI” is being crammed into every possible corner when no one asked for it in use cases with no value-add.  I’d like to think the smart way is to adopt the general language model, extend it with use case-specific training data, and leverage a process like RAG to give it access to SME-written policy/troubleshooting/etc documentation…make a legit useful knowledge base search, or virtual support agent that’s smarter than a basic logic tree, or digital Dr House that diagnoses Lupus.

I doubt I’ll be happy to have Apple Intelligence’s version of Clippy when I’m burning whale oil for lighting and oxen power to commute because all the electricity/water is fully dedicated to data centers.

No doubt better modeling architectures will drive towards legit intelligent systems…but current pace is going to bankrupt companies and waste limited resources standing up monster data centers to keep pace in an imaginary race.

I've probably posted it before but I unapologetically do it again, because it's funny and encapsulates our AI Utopia and the "NOW! With AI!" on everything from apps to zippers, regardless of value, user preference or common sense.
