Republicans can call Hunter before Congress to testify about his business dealings now and the 5th Amendment no longer applies. He can be jailed for contempt of Congress.

From what I understand, that's incorrect.  A pardon can't be used to run an end-around on the 5th Amendment (note: I'm basing this on a discussion I heard on NPR from a gal who wrote a book on the pardon power and its history).  I found that surprising.

So does Hunter then get a South African Consulate Badge and .....

Trump already abused the pardon power to protect his family (Kushner’s dad, who is now named Ambassador lol) and friends (Bannon, Roger Stone, Manafort). The fake outrage over this is so dumb

Don’t forget Joe Arpaio and Michael Flynn. And that Navy SEAL war criminal. And just wait until he starts handing out pardons to Jan. 6 insurrectionists. Remember how he promised pardons to his followers if they engaged in violence against protesters at his rallies? He’s going to use the power of the pardon to incite all sorts of criminal shit in his second term.

I would think you just use the Clear and Present Danger “Senator, I can’t recall.” Defense and call it a day.

Counterpoint:

You just have to yell, "I want the truth".   Its cross examination truth serum...  Aaron Sorkin out front should have told you.

Not a shocking outcome here. Part of it is this is his only living son. I would posit most of us would do the same thing if we had that kind of power to protect our child from prosecution.

Does it make it right? No. I personally think Biden just finally said to himself “F it. You guys wanted me to step down as the nominee because I couldn’t win yet we still lost.” He is at least going to protect his son at this point. He has nothing left to lose. Caring about how he is remembered is not real important once you are dead and gone. That legacy stuff just matters to those still alive or the historians writing about it.

just proves once again the massively hypocritical double standard the populace has for each party. a literal rapist felon insurrectionist traitor who shares secrets with our enemies was just elected president. but a Dem prez pardons his son for politically motivated crimes and all of a sudden the skies are falling. dotard has all but shot someone on 5th Ave and Biden does the equivalent of steal a gumdrop from the Brachs display and everyone loses their goddamn minds. buckle the fuck up because if THIS is ruffling your feathers you will not survive the next four years.

This is exactly right. You can’t vote to reelect a guy who is the single most corrupt person to ever hold office and then complain that some other guy abused his power. You’ve already shown that you don’t care.  It’s Biden’s age scandal all over again

I’m assuming all the people who are upset about this will be back at 1 pm on January 20 after Trump pardons himself.

I think Biden should have pardoned Trump at the same time as his son.  Cleaning the slate, so to speak, would have taken away the right's talking points, and it's not like Trump will ever see justice for them anyway.

Plus, let's be honest, the chances that Trump won't commit more felonies in the future is so near zero as to be imperceptibly different.

I find it hard to disagree with this logic.

I expressed plenty of outrage with the Flynn/Stone/Manafort bullshit.  I also bitched about LIbby.  I don't think I know about Toussie, but will now read up on that one.    I will lose my absolute shit when the Jan 6 pardons come down.

There is no solution.

It doesn't change the fact that Biden is a liar and this move (even if you think its warranted for many different reasons) tarnishes his legacy, feeds conspiracy theories, and removes some of the moral high ground Dems might have had previously.  They still have way more than Rs and Trump, but a little less than yesterday.

Point of order, to be a "liar" or commit fraud for that matter, you have to have the present intention at the time of the lie not to do what the lie says.

I imagine Joe meant it when he said it, but now that we're approaching Thunderdome, why the fuck not go back on your word.

He has made the case all year long that to prevent Thunderdome vote for Kamala (or him in earlier iterations).  I completely agree with him on that.

To now claim that one has never expected Thunderdome or that it would be this bad so now I need to pardon him seems insincere.

Look - I get that I am in the minority on this one.  I understand Brisket's point that everything has changed and there are no more rules.  I just hold Biden personally accountable for this.  It likely also has to do with the fact that I lost a $100 bet I made where I said he wouldn't pardon him.

1) you made a really stupid bet. Thats your fault.

2) moral high ground lol. With whom? The only people who give a shit abiut this are concern trolls that voted for a felon. Do you even know what his crime was? How many people get charged with it per year?

There is nothing important about this topic. The pardon power is a joke and always has been.

For all you snow flakes now concerned about pardons after Trump pardoned his son-in-law’s dad:

The days of Democrats being the sober designated driver for the country are over. It’s all gas, no brakes going forward.  Whatever Trump does, Dems are gonna do it harder and faster. Let’s fucking go.

Nicolas Cage Hair GIF

This is a good post.  Let’s think about how long the GOP has been outsourcing responsibility to the Dems.  The encroachment of the crazies is deep but there are still probably at least 50 percent of the party who aren’t, and they’ve just let the Dems take over so they can posture.

Want a budget? Dems will have to do that. Prevent an ephebophile addict sex pest from becoming AG? Let the Dems do that along with Collins and Murkowski.

And it’s all well and good until you start asking them not just to preserve the norms when it’s in their interest, but also to do it when it’s not in their interest.

Yup.  You won maga fucktards!  You won!  So now we all adapt to your rules.  Power,  ethics..schmethics, fuck everyone but me, who gives a shit about curruption, lying, and grift!  So enjoy, we will all play by the rules win the game.  You won’t give a shit about anything trump and his minions do, his billions of lies, the endless grift, or when the deficit growns another 10 trillion and so don’t expect us to give 1 shit that Biden did what needed to be done anyway.  I will care about Hunter buying a gun while using a illegal substance as soon as i see all the methheads and MJ  smoking gun owners in red america get rounded up and arrested too.

“Moral high ground?” Who gives a fuck? What good has “the moral high ground” done the Dems? No good. Fuck, NEGATIVE good.
There is only one high ground: power, wielded ruthlessly and brutally.
Figure out the game and play by those rules, or get steamrolled in perpetuity.

The first rule?  There’s no rules MF’s…

From your lips to Dotard’s ears.  Eric just breathed a sigh of relief.

I'm still surprised almost 4 years later that Trump didn't offer blanket pardons to himself and his family member for unnamed crimes dating back as far as possible. Even if those pardons were later successfully challenged in court, it's not like the pardons would have harmed them.

I fully understand that the constitutional scholars are fairly in agreement that a President cannot pardon himself. But it wouldn't be illegal for Trump to attempt it and SCOTUS ruling on such a claim would always buy Trump time.

The losing moral high ground position is extremely hilarious to me. Guess what? Trump and the GOP are still going to do the exact same stupid shit that they were planning to do before he was pardoned. The only thing it changes is that it makes people like Incredulity's task of defending and justifying that stupid shit when it happens slightly easier. But guess what? They were going to find ways to defend and justify it regardless.

here is the text from Hunter's pardon. bolded mine.

Quote

ROBERT HUNTER BIDEN

A Full and Unconditional Pardon

For those offenses against the United States which he has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 1, 2014 through December 1, 2024, including but not limited to all offenses charged or prosecuted (including any that have resulted in convictions) by Special Counsel David C. Weiss in Docket No. 1:23-cr-00061-MN in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware and Docket No. 2:23-CR-00599-MCS-1 in the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

why not? the president can do anything, according to scotus, as long as it's an official act. I say he tests this theory early and often until he leaves office. just give the incoming admin a huge pretzel to untwist

SCOTUS said a President is immune from prosecution for official acts.  NOT the President can do anything.

So do the following words: "If the president does it while he's in office, it's an official act."

That was the entire, valid point of concern about the dissent.  The POTUS could make a finding that Incredulity is a clear and present danger, have a drone strike hit your house, and there are zero repercussions.  Not a one.
