Rumor is part of it was unrealistic NIL expectations and also Brooks wasn't necessarily gonna start.

Brooks to aggy would be fun.  And expected given the family ties.

Can't go to SEC team and play immediately next fall  due to an SEC in-conference transfer rule:

Per Gerry, the defensive staff that recruited Brooks at ohio state is gone.  Might be interesting to see if Phatterson tried to get baylor to add Brooks...

Had really high hopes for Brooks.  Saw him play in high school quite a bit and he really stood out - nfl written all over him.  But I agree his twitch and speed have gone backwards.  Don’t know if it’s injury or something else.  Sad either way.

Not to be one of 'those people,' but if your opponents don't score and you also don't score, you don't win. The game is a tie. Okay, maybe it's fun to be one of those people.

Has there ever been a game, since the invention of the line of scrimmage, that ended in a 0-0 tie?

Because I feel pretty good making the statement, "If you can hold your opponent to zero points, you will win the game." The number of times that statement ends up not being true is insignificant.

"Yes, there have been 73 games in NFL history that ended as 0-0 ties. All occurred in the early days of the NFL, and the most recent one occurred in 1943. Since the NFL merger in 1970, however, the fewest combined points scored in a game is three."Dec 10, 2023

The worst college football game ever: 77 punts, 33 plays and the growing legend of a record-setting 0-0 tie. Centenary vs Texas Tech in 1939!!!!

Crazy that it involves Texas Tech!

I'd think lots of 0-0, particularly in Olden  Daze. I know the '36 Sugar Bowl was a 3-2 game, TCU over LSU, and the '42 one was 2-0 Fightin' Lombardis over Mizzou. I think Lombardi was at Fordham in 30's, but I always associated him with Fordham.

NFL overtime still allows for ties, but I don't know what NC2A has done with college rules - wouldn't surprise me either way.

EDIT: Treaty Oak beat me to it, at least NFL-wise, and with actual data instead of speculation.

IIRC, if a college or high school game ended in a 0-0 tie, the team with most penetrations across the 50 was awarded the win.

This post brought up a nightmare memory. There was a large old neighborhood group of us that played intramural football at UT in the early 80’s. There were too many guys for one team, so we fielded 2, the best on one and the rest on the second who played one level down. The best team won several titles, including in the top class.

It was awesome to see because they would beat all these frats that drew from large populations, practiced a lot, etc. Our guys from the neighborhood were just 8 that grew up together and rolled out for every game and just played. These guys were great athletes and won football, basketball and softball titles at UT.

But the second team, on which I played, hadn’t won a title in the lower class. We always felt we weren’t holding up our neighborhood’s legacy. And the first team guys always gave us shit for it.

One year, we finally got our act together and played in the title game. With one play left it was 4th down near our end zone, the score was 0-0, but we led in penetrations. So all we had to do is keep them out of the end zone and we’d finally have a title.

Our DB intercepted the pass in the end zone and downed it, presumably ending the game. But the dumb fuck kid referee was so clueless he didn’t know football rules. He called it a safety instead. We argued with this idiot for 15 minutes but lost the appeal and the game 2-0. Thanks for reminding me. Dammit. To this day, we still catch hell from the guys for not also being on the wall at Gregory Gym.

In games that ended in a tie, but needed a winner, I think it was penetrations of the TWENTY, then if that tied, count first downs, then if that tied, total yardage. I don't recall that still tied, ever, but maybe lastly a coin flip.

Phenomenal video on Gunner Helm, Texas, Sark's culture and TE room. GH is an awesome imterview. His story on blocking Ray Thorton is funny AF.

It was interesting that he said all the guys who didn’t want to work either left or went “to the draft”

Who do we think that last part is about?

I took it as he was talking about beyond the TE room, but it doesn't matter now...they gone.

Now that the portal is closed, and it seems that the roster is pretty much set for 2024 save a potential grad transfer portal addition, here's how I am rating the position groups:

Ratings:

  1. Liability/Unknown
  2. Some Holes / Struggle Often
  3. Average / Serviceable (UDFA talent)
  4. Good (Draftable Talent)
  5. Great/Elite (1-3 Round Draft Talent)

Ratings are two numbers: (floor / potential)

Offense

QB: (4/5) - Quinn hopefully performs as a RD 1 QB; Arch Manning is ready

RB: (4/5) - Deep and talented RB room; will CJ Baxter or Jaydon Blue be one of best RBs by year-end?

WR: (4/5) - Plenty of talent and depth, just need to find the right mix

TE: (3.5/4) - Helm and Niblack are solid TE weapons (although for different roles)

OL: (4/5) - A lot of talent and depth. Williams is talented, but replacing a RT who got drafted won't be without some issues. How long will Conner start?

Defense

DE (4/5) - Lots of talent and depth. Getting pressure from the edge should not be an issue this season

DT (3/4.5) - The Arizona transfers help set a solid floor; Collins is the real upside for this unit

LB (3.5/4.5) - Hill is special, Gbenda has experience, and Lefau and Gullete have talent

CB (3/4.5) - Muhammad is a stud, but a lot depends on the development of the true FR and what Cole from the portal can do at the P4 level

NB (3.5/4.5) - Barron and Guilbeau are solid NB options

S (3.5/4.5) - Please start Mukuba next to Williams. Freshman are talented, but unproven

Special Teams

K: (3/4) - Auburn is a known commodity

P: (1/3) - A lot depends on Kern or a portal addition

Bert Auburn was 1st team All conference and honorable-mention AA, made 83% of his FG attempts and you give him a 4 for a ceiling?

Wtf is wrong with you, man?

4 in his list is "good (draftable talent)". How does Auburn not fit in that range? If anything it's a bit high as I'd be shocked if he's drafted.

He didn't do it a 4 out of 10 scale

Fair enough. But by that standard the ceiling for any kicker is 4, which is weird.

That's a fair take. The 1-5 rating I set is likely too hard for a K / P to get a 5. Regardless, I think Auburn is a good kicker and he will help us win games this year, but I don't think he is or will be great / elite.

I don’t have much expectations for Norton, his tape is suspect. Savea was a pleasant surprise, he looked strong and active in the spring game. I have zero expectations for Broughton. I believe Bryant and Bledsoe will flash. No idea what to expect of Sydir. January might be able to give you quality snaps this season. Collins was one of the most disruptive interior linemen in the country last year, I believe he’ll be the guy we’ve been waiting on. Kenny doesn’t have it made for him, but a good coach should be able to produce with these pieces. I feel we’re solid enough at ILB to remain strong against the run.
