Terry has been, is, and will be in over his head as head coach of UT basketball. CDC never should have hired him, ESPECIALLY after interviewing no other candidates for the job.  Terry's resume sucks. He's going to waste a great talent in Tre Johnson.

CDC was stuck...no way that UT or the media was gonna let them not keep a black man who just took over a train wreck situation and immediately took the team to the Elite Eight. Zero chance.

The national media would have preened about it for 2 seconds before moving on to something else. Texas would have been vindicated because either nobody else would have wanted to hire him, or whatever school did hire him would have done jack shit and ended up firing him. It was a terrible, emotional hire.

Terry may need to go but one-and-dones don't win titles on their own or typically lead teams to deep tourney runs.

If Tre is our best player by a lot this team won't go deeper than a SS. Unless he's like a once in a decade type freshman.

who cares. since when should cdc give a shit about the reactions of kirk bohls and the denizens of surly. if cdc makes a real hire then Texas is doing well right now and looking good for the future while RT is at some other school stinking up the joint. who’s complaining then?

Yep, the team with the best basketball player to ever play at Texas lost in (checks notes) the second round.

It's possible Tre Johnson isn't here to waste if we hire someone else. that said, I have to believe CDC made some phone calls and for people he wanted there wasn't interest or enough interest.  If he didn't well that is on him and very disappointing.  Terry being a "good guy" and having connections to the donors from being here paid off for him, I think.  We'll never know and can only go from here.

Current events tell me any blowback would have lasted @ two days.

people say they don’t want to write off the whole season after one game, but we’re probably at the point where the best bet for us to have a “good” season is to simply make the tourney and then win at least two games. i don’t think that the regular season is ever going to be a fun romp as long as RT is here. as long as he’s here the regular season will be a rollercoaster where we almost never win or lose more than 3 games in a row after the calendar turns over, and where every single season comes down to tourney performance. what’s weird is, as depressing as that sounds, the postings on this board since late era barnes would lead one to believe that that’s exactly how the people here like it.

Definitely not willing to write off the season based on one game without Tramon Mark.  He's going to be such a huge piece.  Like I said in the game thread, he's probably our best collegiate player (behind Tre, our best pro prospect player).

Hopefully he's back by Syracuse on the 21st - the next 3 games we should not need him (HCU, Chicago State, MS Valley)

I wish we had won against the Buckeyes, but if we can go 2-2 against our P4 slate (Ohio State, Syracuse, NCST, UConn), I think that will be a good enough non-conf, since one loss will be without Mark.

That first SEC game versus aggy will be pretty ugly offensively lol - Buzz is all-in on that Angel Reese offense.  Miss, offensive rebound, miss, offensive rebound.

It's not possible to observe our play under RT and conclude we will ever be as good as we could have been under Beard or Barnes.  He's just not that good.  I get the hire, I even grudgingly supported it, not on basketball terms, just situationally, but I will be shocked if we end up a conference championship contender or a second weekend kind of team under this guy.

Lulz, I'd say so. A trip to the sweet 16 would give RT our two best seasons in the last  15 years.

Edit: and I dont say that as someone that thinks RT is the  answer. I think most of realized he was a Div 1  retread when  he was hired while acknowledging the odd circumstances that led to that hire. But if he makes sweet 16's on the regular, he wont be going anywhere.

There's a zero chance this team makes the sweet 16 if we play street ball offense in the half court all season. I wasn't a huge fan of 2 guys from thew same team coming here. especially a mid major that had 3 guys that couldn't get them to the tourney yet were highly sought after like they were some program changing guys. Waited way to long to go after a big man shows. Our Inside presence will lack as well. Anyone thinking we can make the SS is drinking some Horn Hard Kool-Aid. and then you factor in our coach isn't great and there you have it. I think NIT is probably where we end up and if we do make the tourney it will be a play in game 11 seed or something.

What's RT's buyout at the end of this season? I think CDC would like a transformation in MBB like what have experienced with Sark in football. If we don't have a good season or show progress over the last season, he might not be back next year.

I said something similar to a friend earlier today. If we have a bubble team kind of season, no one is going to give a shit by now if Terry gets canned.

one final four appearance in our lifetime and that took a generational player, what exactly are your expectations year to year for ut basketball ?

sweet 16 seems a little high, year to year

Fuck that shit. Our program doesn’t need to be defined by an underperforming past. With the right coach, we can be in the top tier of programs in the country.

yeah, and this is what sucks about college basketball fandom these days. apparently everyone except me is willing endure an endlessly frustrating november, december, january, february, and half of march all so we can win two games one weekend at the very end of the year, resulting in nothing substantive, and call it a success. i hate it so much.

we have tre johnson and a bunch of talented guys who are going to take time to mesh. we have a bunch of guys who are supposed to be 34% - 38% shooters from deep. one of those guys getting hot + tre johnson playing like a lottery pick and that’s the exact formula for a mediocre team to make the S16.

I want Royal Ivey if we do move on. Not saying I want to but if it comes to it, I feel Royal would be a great coach

He's been coaching for 10 years now, and not a bit of it is in the  college game. I feel most guys that want to coach cbb would probably be seeking experience/exposure as an assistant.

a UT contract would be $15 to 20mil, guaranteed. the program needs much more NIL money

Sure, but I would want more out of a  coach than "sure, I'm not much  for the college game, but if you  want to give me $20M, I'll be your huckleberry." Put it this way,  If UT didnt offer, how many other schools that compete at the level we want to would be throwing that contract at  Ivey? My guess is none.

NIL has changed everything. Just because we had limited success in the pre-NIL era doesn't mean we can't set our sights much higher now. CDC wants a top 10 program. We are not one right now.

nil has always been around, one way or another. portal is a bigger shock to the system imo

Ivey on the surface seems like it would be another feel good type hire and not a championship winner mentality type hire

He is on track to be a NBA head coach as soon as next year. Even if you put the fact he played at Texas aside, he is pretty highly thought of in basketball circles.

The concern with him would be more of the fact he has never coached in college before so there would be recruiting and roster building question marks. It’s a tough adjustment for a lot of coaches.

I would make a serious run at Nate Oats and if he turns you down then go after Otzelberger or Underwood but you have to make Oats say no first.

those are solid coaches... I like the guy at Arizona as well.

Oats has a buyout of $18 million.

That amount of money wouldn't be a deal breaker IF Del Conte wants him AND Oats wants to come. But its a bit early to be writing RTs UT coaching obit after one shaky game on the road, and there may be candidates that are a better fit if/when that day comes.

$18 million buyout for a basketball coach is borderline insane.

IIRC, we waited a week to hire Beard so his buyout would drop from $5 million to $4 million and that was considered a lot at the time.

I think there will be good candidates outside of the obvious ones that people always try to will into existence (Brad Stevens, Jay Wright, some random NBA coach, etc.).

Every year that goes by that amount will be less and less insane. I'm not saying Oats = Hurley, but if you are serious about your goal to have UConn like success and you think a coach is a guy that can get you there, $18M is not that much money. Shit changes fast in the never ending escalation of salaries, tv contracts etc... The top cbb coaching salaries are now  running close to $10M. For some schools that amount would be a hurdle to high. I'm just saying that Texas could eat if they felt strongly it would result in greater than a cumulative $18M of revenue increase over the next decade. CDC could find the  money. Its a  hypothetical argument, I'm not even saying Oats  would be my number 1 guy.
