Fire Rodney Terry

I am, believe it or not, in wait and see mode.  I don’t think this a long term solution but am hopeful

I think this is where many of us are.  I doubt anyone believes that Terry belongs on the Mt. Rushmore of men's basketball coaches, but there is something to be said about getting to the tournament every year, and actually winning some games.  That doesn't mean that we shouldn't want to be at the pinnacle of the sport, but it's premature to assume that Terry can't at least be as successful as Barnes.  He's already exceeded what Shaka accomplished here, and that guy got 5 years.

I’d be pretty surprised if he were as successful as Rick but you never know.

uh, no. if RT was capable of that he would have shown it years ago at his previous jobs. let’s not get crazy here. barnes has a resume at Texas that will not be touched for a long time. Beard had the opportunity to actually exceed what barnes did at Texas, but he obviously blew it. RT is not going to win 400 games and go to 16 tourneys in 17 years at Texas. we can support RT without going crazy hyperbolic.

RT isn’t a top coach, and at UT we should be able to get someone at that level. But a lot of people think Shaka is a top coach and RT is doing a lot better than he did at Texas.

I will say that the teams play hard under RT and get better as the year goes on. Sometimes hard coaches like Barnes and Beard burn teams out and they get so gun shy that they crumble in tough situations. RT is also a great recruiter, both at the high school level and in the portal, so the floor is going to be pretty high.

In the end we are in the worst possible place. We are going to make the tourney just about every year. We will be in the 20-30 range and win a game. Maybe we will occasionally make a run. But I don’t see us ever having an ELITE team, and we will be good enough that firing RT will be difficult. And there will be no guarantees that his successor will be substantially better.

I'm still going to hope for the best and that Terry proves us wrong, however.

Last year was super frustrating, but this season's roster is better constructed and seems very promising.

Don't confuse being hopeful with expectation.  As far as wins and losses go, I agree with you.  As for tournament success, we'll see, but I like what Terry has done so far, limited data points notwithstanding.  As a fan, I want both, but forced to pick one, I'll take success in the tournament.  That is where Barnes underachieved at Texas in my opinion, and where Terry can potentially match, if not exceed him.  The math will get fuzzy if Terry gets us into the tournament less often but has a better tournament winning percentage.

I'm not judging Terry for what he did before he was head coach here.  I'm simply hoping that he can do more with the resources that he now has.  That is not hyperbole, it's guarded optimism.  This is why I'm in "wait and see" mode rather than expecting him to fail.  As a Texas fan, it's a lot more fun pulling for the guy than lamenting the fact that he got the job.

It's really hard to judge any coach, besides the obvious elite one like Self, K, Izzo, Roy, etc., when it comes to the new landscape of NIL.

Shouldn't we be hopeful and pleased with how RT and staff has leveraged the NIL money to land guys like Tre Johnson from the HS ranks and Pope, Mark, Larry, Kent, Shedrick, Weaver, etc. from the portal ranks?  And even though they decided to go pro instead of college, Ron Holland and AJ Johnson.

Judging RT's previous stops at G5 schools pre-NIL is not a good comparison.   He went from driving a Honda Accord with a cup full of loose change and the check engine light on at UTEP/Fresno to a Ferrari with suitcases of cash in the trunk.

And the last 2 seasons, he was driving that Ferrari through the conference equivalent of Fallujah, dodging weapons fire every single game from a bunch of elite coaches with elite players who fucking hated us and wanted us dead.  The SEC is good, but it ain't the weekly street brawl that is the Big 12.

Call me crazy, but I think we should wait for the guy who is apparently the 2nd best scorer on the team to get healthy and play some games before we start making judgments on this year's team.

January is about the right time to start judging a team in the NIL era short of total collapse.

I'm all good on enduring any more Rick Barnes Specials where we dominate in December & January, fade in February, and shit down our legs in March. The goal is making the tournament and then peaking at tournament time to make a deep run.

It's very silly to be making pronouncements on this season 4 games in with the 2nd best scorer on the team injured.

I suppose the post is addressing people who may have a different take.

when you come into a thread saying, “call me crazy but i think we should let this season play out before we write off this team”, there’s generally somebody, if not many somebodies, saying otherwise. when you say, “it’s very silly to make pronouncements about this team after 4 games”, you would expect that somebody is making negative pronouncements about the team. nobody in this thread is doing either of those things. the last pronouncement made about the team in this thread is that it’s a legit second weekend team. so what’s the fuss about?

besides which, this is the fire RT thread, not the team season thread. it’s just a strange, ad hominem, righteously indignant post aimed at nobody.

The entire premise of this thread is writing off any team that Terry puts on the floor. It's crazy that you actually believe otherwise, but then again...

the entire premise of this thread is discussing the job that our head coach is doing, a subject that was never brought up in motown’s incredulous rant about people writing off our team after four games, something that nobody in this thread is doing.

Nah we are fucked. This team has no chance.

My biggest frustration with this year’s iteration is that there really doesn’t seem to be an identity offensively. Like i’m not sure what we’re trying to accomplish. Haven’t picked up on any sets, specific action or touches/match ups we’re looking good to.
With all the new faces, i’m not surprised to see struggles on that end as they gel and develop together. But i’d like or expect to see them working with some kind of objectives in mind. But then again maybe the offensive philosophy this year is just to get it off the rim and run run run
