I know we would have dudes that can shoot, and they probably can shoot because their coach knows how to get them open.

Since 2000

3 point percentage

#1 Gonzaga 38.2%

#115 Texas 34.7%

You are routinely one of the dumbest motherfuckers on this site and I'm glad you aren't running Texas' athletic department.

What - on God's Green Earth - any of you think suggests that Mark Few would have long term success at Texas is beyond me.

Let's dig up Bobby Bowden's corpse and have him replace Sark while we're at it.

nice set shot.  you know shitall about sports and display it daily.

I personally think Mark Few would be a great hire.  He just turned 62, which is on the older end. But as we have covered, that is a lot younger than Barnes, Izzo and Sampson. Younger than Bruce Pearl. Same age as Bill Self (they were born on the same day, lol).  He could be a very good coach for a decade.  Even in the NBA you got guys like Popovich, Thibodeau and Carlisle who are still great coaches well into their 60s.

Over the last 10 years, Gonzaga has a runner up finish, +3 Elite 8s, +3 Sweet 16s. And that doesn't include possibly their best team which was 31-2 in the lost Covid year. You would be hard pressed to find a better program over that stretch.

Moreover, they play an fun brand of basketball with an offense that is consistently ranked in the top-5.

This would be a slam dunk. But I put the odds at 10%. Why would he leave?

I'm pretty certain we would be in the top-10 right now with only 1-2 losses.

Coaches winning% all time (10 seasons minimum)

#2 all time in winning percentage (behind West Texas A&M legend Sam Burton). Seems pretty good. 62 is not that old. Musselman is 60. Cal is 66. Pitino is 72.

It's hard to see Few leaving after 26 years. I don't see it happening. But if Few was truly up for it, sure, why the hell not? He'll retire at Gonzaga though.

I’m not sure but I do know we would be playing better defense.

Everything in blue from 1999 forward is Mark Few at Gonzaga, everything in burnt orange is the entire history of our program. Perhaps one reason Few could want to come to Texas is our potential NIL and him being able to get over the hump and cap off his career with a title?

If my maths are right, he currently has a kid in HS. He also talks a lot about fly fishing, which seems to be his main hobby. His wife went to Gonzaga and he has spent his entire career there even before being head coach. And he is from that part of the country.

I’m revising my odds down to 1%.

ok, a couple of things:

1)we are not hiring ben mccollum. he may end up being the next coach k, but Texas, and especially CDC, are not replacing RT with someone who is currently in his first season as a D-1 coach.

2)we are in no way too good for mark few and if whoever we do hire is even on par with mark few then that means we’ve fired cdc and replaced him with someone who will hire chris beard back.

I don't catch enough games, but when I do, I don't see top 10 shooters. Am I just catching bad games? It's been a while.

this is one of our better shooting teams in a long time, they just aren’t forced to take good shots, and as such, usually don’t. tre johnson is our best shooter since KD. truly. his shooting talent is unreal.

Watched y'all the other day, I don't love his shot motion but there's no questioning it works for him and he's smoove. Easily would start for any program in the country I think.

i was calling for mick cronin to replace shaka smart as far back as 2016 or 2017 when he was at cincy. that said, while he’s a very good coach, he’s as big of an asshole as rick barnes ever was without any of the charm or public tact. is he a great fit personality wise in austin? not really. but would be have Texas respectable and competitive in short order? yes, i believe he would.

I don't think he's a good personality fit anywhere. Dude is just a tiny man with a Napoleon complex that can't handle himself like a normal person.

This is dumb.

CDC is going to upgrade from RT and it's going to be a damn good hire.  And it's going to be someone elite with skins, and everyone else will be surprised, but I won't be.

And if the rumors were true that he had Few very interested before we hired RT, don't be surprised if he circles back on that.

CDC gets his guy (or gal).

FWIW

Roy Williams was an assistant before being hired at Kansas

Coach K record at Army before Duke: image.png.62148744a8dd7adba5f198293f80992c.png

Dan Hurley prior to UCONN

Completely ruling out McCollum would be retarded. He's a winner plain and simple who is only 43 years old so if we did hire and strike gold his next job will be the NBA(if he wanted to go that route)

Just seen Texas softball is pre-season #1,  and more than likely Texas baseball top 25. Seems everyone else pulling their weight in Austin but the basketball team.

CDC has to be thinking that .

Terry better make something shake and quick

He coached under Dean Smith for a decade at UNC where they won a championship and rarely missed the s16 or better.

Played under Bob Knight for 4 years and won the NIT while it was still a big deal. Also coached under him for a season and won a championship at Indiana as the assistant.

Dan Hurley's father is one of the greatest HS basketball coaches of all time. Also Rhode Island had not made a tournament or won a game in almost 20 years up to that point.

McCollum may be the guy going forward but playing under Steve Tappmeyer and coaching with Doig Moe doesn't bring much confidence. He needs a few more years at the D1 level to get a high major job.

I wonder how many of these McCollum stans also were pining for Jeff Traylor to be the next football coach. The dude may be the bastard child of John Wooden and Coach K, but there's no chance he's the next horns hoops coach.

I just pine for him because it would be a good hire for our program. Some of you look at our program as some upper tier of college basketball program, when we're clearly not, nor have ever been in that tier.

And yet the last time few times we went out onto the open market to grab a coach we got Beard, Shaka, Barnes....all of whom had proven significantly more than a guy who has never faced a ranked Div I team in his coaching career. I would argue that coaching here in Austin is a more desirable gig than our historical "tier" standing would suggest. Resources are the name of the game, now more than ever, and we have resources few schools can match. If the best CDC can do is McCollum, I'll be shocked. My guess is CDC goes big game hunting if he's looking to replace RT this spring.

Yeah but idiots in this thread scoff at Mark Few, who has a career almost as good as our entire program history. So McCollum isn't experienced enough and the thought of Mark Few isn't good enough. So which is it?

he’s not qualified for this job. he needs A LOT more HC experience at the D-1 level before we can have a clue as to whether or not he can handle recruiting, coaching, NIL, etc at this level. this shows us nothing:

IMG_2609.thumb.jpeg.0e5e0b18d1f91949dfcdb71120f2c034.jpeg

we've never even seen him build a roster before, he just brought all of his guys who’d already been playing together for multiple years. we cannot hire someone who’s never shown that he can do a single thing that we’re looking for from our next HC.

You're right championship pedigree head coach doesn't matter. That is an important fucking trait for coaches and he's also a tremendous X's and O's guy which is also a very fucking important trait for head coaches.

KenPom has us as the #10 ranked program since 1997, and that includes some pretty lean years.  If we aren't in the upper tier, we are very close to it, and absolutely have the potential to reach it.

Name the idiots outside of ztejas that scoffed at Few. Luckily, he wont be involved in the selection process. My guess is that Few would get about a 99% approval rating from UT fans, not that I think he has any interest in leaving the PNW.

ben mccollum runs what is literally the slowest offense in America:

IMG_2610.thumb.jpeg.580159c68bb73ba8b9a6f975d6684e3d.jpeg

yeah let’s trot that out there for the next few years against our SEC foes as we completely rebuild the roster with a guy who has never even recruited at this level before.

come on guys, this is ridiculous. ben mccollum went viral on twitter back in december and like three days later a bunch of y’all were/are up in here swearing up and down that he needs to be our next hire when you don’t even know anything about him other than a. idea you saw on twitter + his wiki page. this is a silly discussion.
