No, Beard went to the students and asked to build a better environment. He went to West Campus. He brought his fireside chat from tech, which made tech fans even more mad. I think you could argue they worked for each other because the environment he built was perfect for an arena like Moody.

I think RT tried to go connect with the students a few times, but it hasn’t played out the same way for whatever reason. I do give RT props for trying as he wanted to keep everything rolling.

This. My kids were on campus then and literally every week I would hear something from them about Beard being at some event talking to students. He got mine fired up about going to games where as before they had no interest.
I do feel some gratitude to him because by getting my kids interested, we got to have that in common and it was fun.

Okay but the HCA hasn't fallen off.

I agree with @Ignatius that Moody is the bigger factor.

I appreciate what Beard did and he was masterful with it but Moody is still packed out, there are still huge lines for students wanting to get in, and it is still giving this flawed Texas team a chance in games against even the best teams in the country.

None of the current underclassmen at Texas are being swayed by Chris Beard.

moody was the perfect arena at the perfect time, but beard is the one who built the student support from the ground up, with the most aggressive student interaction campaign i’ve ever seen. again, i’ve never seen anything like it.

sure, tom izzo will bring you some pizza while you’re camping out, bruce pearl will paint his chest and cheer his ass off with you in the student section, and larry eustachy will bang your daughter; but chris beard, like the maniacal, obsessive person that he is, will seek out all 50,000 undergrads and do anything he can to reach them and sell them on why they should become hardcore Texas Basketball fans. he was rabid in his pursuit of building student excitement in a way that nobody at UT has ever seen. this atmosphere does not exist without beard.

i can also guarantee you that we don’t have hundreds of empty student seats for a saturday game against the no.1 team in the country. not a chance. he’d never let that happen, he’d be all over it. moody is great, but Beard’s one lasting legacy here is giving us a legit student section thanks to his total obsession with making that happen.

The legend grows!!!!

i’ve posted this before, but he’s like the ja morant of ncaa coaches- his talent and ability are undeniable, it’s simply about whether or not he can stay out of trouble when he’s away from the court. chris beard is 100% the real deal, probably as good as any other coach out there at program building. but those same things that make charismatic and obsessive in a good way have a down side to them, and he’s got to keep that shit in check. if he can do that he will be a top flight coach for the next few decades.

Texas will not midseason fire unless Hot Rod slaps the shit out of his gf and gets a mug shot.  And he ain't going to get fired because he lost on the road to Ole Miss by 3 points as a 6.5 point dog.

What about being swept by our former coaches? There should be a clause in the contract that states that the University can fire you anytime your team is swept by our former coaches.

Did Rodney Terry miss an open 3 to tie the game on Wednesday?

The last 2 games RT has drawn up plays to get great shots to win/tie the game.

It's his fault Tre bricked a wide open look? And Chris Beard's coaching ability helped cause Tre to miss it too?

Or is the argument that we should have easily beaten a ranked team on the road who were 6.5 point favorites and the fact that it was even close is RTs fault?

It's not a real logical leap from a close road loss to a ranked opponent to FIRE RT NOW!!!!!

To be fair, we've been on a fire Terry kick since last season. It's not like that sentiment is just from that game.

I'm not worried we are going to be "competing" with UNC for a new coach, because they like to keep it in the family.  Every coach since Dean Smith retired in 1997 has either played for UNC or coached under Smith at UNC

Davis - played at UNC
Williams - AC under Dean Smith
Doherty - played at UNC
Guthridge - AC under Dean Smith

Yeah it just feels like everyone has decided this guy isn't the guy from the jump. The prevailing sentiment and the actual results on the court are not in line.

I share everyone's frustrations with our "offensive plays/scheme" as they/it seem non-existent, but an Elite 8 -> Round of 32 -> at least make the tournament is not fireable IMO. Unless there's a perfect, no brainer replacement available.

IMO we have a ton of 50/50 games coming up. They could break that we lose most of them, miss the tournament, and RT is clearly gone. Or they could break that we win most of them, get a decent seed, and make a tournament run.

I don't pretend like I can predict the future. I'll hope for the latter scenario as I'm a Texas fan who watches all the games and likes seeing Texas win. If the former occurs the good news is we'll move on from RT.

From my perspective it's an uncertain tossup situation that we have to watch play out.

It doesn’t take 3+ years to rebuild in basketball. It’s quite obvious this team is not well coached, we have no semblance of an offense, etc etc. He’s not good at fundraising for NIL which in this day and age is critical to talent acquisition. Quite frankly never should have been hired and if it weren’t for his interim with another coaches philosophy and players he wouldn’t have ever been considered for this job. He’s never going to get Texas to where we want to be or a consistent top 10 team. It’s best to just cut loose and focus on hiring the real candidate to get that ball rolling.

I can see people supporting RT if the bar for success is Texas' previous history.  He has already done better than Shaka. He is trending better than Tom Penders.  He is doing better than Barnes last four years.  He won the same number of tourney games in his first true year as Chris Beard did (and took Beard's team to the Elite 8).  In UT's history, there is really only a period of about nine years with Rick Barnes that are better than what Terry is delivering.

None of that is good enough.

We have the money (if the right coach extracts it). We have the arena. We have the practice facilities. We have a prime regional recruiting base as well as national appeal. We have a slew of NBA players to leverage. We are in one of the best cities in the world. UT basketball should be an absolute winning machine similar to most of our other sports.  Terry will never get us to that level.

No, we have plenty of empirical evidence to prove that he is not. Given plenty of time he has not measured up compared to other coaches at the same program.
He is now 56 years old, we know who he is. Does anyone think he's going to turn UT into a blueblood? That should be the goal even if we never quite make it.
Could Tre/Pope/Kaluma go on a heater and get us to the elite 8 again?  Sure. But that doesn't mean I trust Coach Terry with the long-term health of the program.

Just the fact that the last guy worked his ass off to get the students involved and we get crickets from RT, and the last guy went to a program that had been perpetually bad
and in two years has them ranked and doing better than they have ever done, should be enough.

no sport on the planet sees wins and losses more affected by the HC than college basketball. the supply and demand is all out of whack. there is a HUGE pool of talented players, well rounded players, skilled players, athletic players, and sometimes players who are all of the above. the supply exceeds the demand by a mile. that’s why good coaches in CBB win everywhere they go, from the beginning of their career to the very end, with very few exceptions. they have their core tenets and philosophies, they recruit to said philosophies from the enormous pool of talent, then they win, and proceed to continue climbing the ladder.

if RT was capable of winning at this level then he would have proven that years and years ago when he was given a decade to prove himself as a HC at two different D-1 schools. after doing nothing of note as a HC for a decade RT went backwards and took a position as an assistant for a guy half his age whose six year head coaching career was already light years better than the entirety of RT’s career. people here didn’t “decide” he wasn’t good enough from the jump, we all knew he wasn’t good enough, it was simple fact. still is.

RT did a pretty solid job at Fresno. He took them to the tourney for the first time in 15 years (longer than that if you consider Tark put them on probation to get there). And he was steadily improving their recruiting and final KenPom ranking. He finished his time there averaging 22 wins in his last 3 years, which was good enough to get a better gig at UTEP.

I’m sure an elite coach like Self, Izzo, Beard, etc would have done even better, but it wasn’t a failure by any stretch of the imagination.

I just wish we could land a solid coach like Rick Barnes or Shaka Smart.

Let’s be honest do we really think they could win a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP here?? They couldn’t before and Rick Barnes probably had the most talented squads I had ever seen at Texas.

I honestly think we had one with Beard, smh dumb ass

Exactly. Even though Groundhog Day is tomorrow I'm really sick of having this same conversation again and again and again. But it's quite clear that he took a team with a perpetual losing record and got them to 20 win seasons and NCAA bids.

I also think it's irrelevant at this point. Of course he didn't get the job based on his past performance. But he has the job. I'll grade him on what he actually does here at Texas as opposed to a mix of his previous record and my subjective opinion of him.

CDC should not give RT an extension after this season... too many folks see RT as one of the worst head coaches in the SEC.

You don't have to gatekeep people's reason for coming to the Fire Rodney Terry thread.

he repeatedly comes into the Fire Rodney Terry thread only to get himself all worked up and upset that people are in here talking about firing rodney terry. if my kind suggestion that he stop clicking on the thread that only serves to upset him is “gatekeeping”, then fine, i’m a gatekeeper.

UTEP isn’t a better job than Fresno State. It was a lateral move, which is still nothing to shame.

Disagree. I think most coaches would consider UTEP to be a step up.

Since Fresno joined D1 (1970), they have only made the NCAA tourney 6 times (1 vacated). UTEP in that same timeframe has gone 13 times including a sweet 16. And this isn’t even including UTEP’s national title in 1966.

It isn’t a big step up, but it is a step up. And for RT it should have been a great move to get him back to his recruiting base.

We are going to eventually whack RT. It will be interesting to see where he winds up.

Neither utep nor Fresno are top eight jobs in their state.  It’s like asking who’s fatter Rosie O’Donnell or Roseanne Barr

Well, if they aren’t extending him next year after his third year of a five year contract why not get rid of him now?

Are we extending him?   Even if we do maybe it reduces his buyout

Depends on when we are talking about them. I don’t think Roseanne would have ever been a would for me. Rosie O at one point could have gotten it.

My point:  If RT is back at Texas next year, I want him to remain under terms of his current contract, and only have 3yrs left including next season.

I was gonna say you either have to extend or let him go next year but you could extend and reduce his buyout
