I've been impressed at how he has evolved as an offensive coach. The tempo and type of games his teams would end up in at North Texas his last few years was a borderline disgrace to offensive basketball.

He probably knew he had to open it up a bit to get the type of players he needed in a major conference.

i wonder if we will give will wade a look now that paying players is legal. his resume is the exact kind that you’re looking for when filling a vacancy like this one.

•jumped chattanooga up 163 spots from the previous year in his first year in charge. got hired by VCU after just two seasons.

•won the A10 and a tourney game in his first year at VCU. was hired by LSU after just two years at VCU.

•kenpom finishes at LSU:

66, 19, 37, 24, 21

his first four teams were elite offensively: 33rd, 12th, 4th, and 5th nationally in ORtg

his fifth team finished 6th in DRtg

•30-4 in first year at McNeese with a team that was 9th in the country in 3-point shooting and 6th in the country in forcing turnovers.

THAT is the type of resume that Texas should be going after. not a guy with four months of d-1 experience, not a guy with 10 totally unremarkable years at fresno state and utep- no. a guy who’s young enough to stick around for two decades but proven enough to unarguably warrant his hiring and the optimism that comes with it.

will we actually go after will wade? i very seriously doubt it. but i love his resume, and it should be used as a template for the kind of coach we should be hiring at Texas.

Texas cares about perception, so someone like Wade is out.

I do like what McCasland has done at tech this year, and if the rumors are to be believed, he was inquiring about the job when Beard was let go. I think CC at tech wouldn’t let him get away, though. With what they are doing with other sports and the disdain they have for Texas (especially after not recognizing their made up agreement after we left and after we took Beard), I think they would do whatever it took to keep McCasland.

If RT got the boot, I could see CDC looking at someone like Kevin Willard. He’s not a sexy hire by any means, but his background fits.

(Not saying that is who I’d want either.)

The first decent P5 opening is on the board with Florida State as Hamilton is resigning/retiring at the end of the season.

I used to give @Derka shit on Lloyd because I couldn’t see him leaving that job for the Texas job. Arizona is a good job, but now I’m warming up to Lloyd. I’m not sure what money issues Arizona has on the athletic side of the house compared to their academic side. With basketball being the star sport there, I’m wondering if some Arizona BMDs would step up to keep Lloyd. Winning the Big 12 in year 1 might change some things for Lloyd and Arizona though.

i have TJO and Lloyd in a tier above mccasland. i know that people think that TJO will never leave ISU, but they thought the same thing about The Mayor. we can offer him everything that ISU can’t, and he can coach here for 10-15 and still have plenty of years left to go back to ISU and win there. whenever we do hire a new coach, i hope we go after him hard.

I had them at most winning no more than 4 conf games, so it would take a huge collapse for that to happen.

Sucks, but I have no confidence with RT as our head coach... 😬

I’ve been a defender but tonight is inexcusable. This could and should cost at a tourney bid, and missing the tourney with a generational talent on the roster should be a fireable offense for anyone associated with this unmitigated clusterfuck

I either want Texas to be firmly in the tournament, or miss entirely. I want there to be no ambiguity around RT’s job security.

I agree with you, though. Getting run off their home court at a pivotal point in the season may start a slide they just can’t overcome as it relates to their tourney hopes. This is certainly more likely if Shedrick misses any extended time with this injury.

Regardless, I don’t see RT losing his job after only his full second season if his makes the tournament. Nevertheless, I have no faith in his long-term viability at Texas.

I agree. It needs to go one way or the other.

This is a really fucking bad outing that's going to take a lot to be made up for.

I say this as politely as possible, stfu. Terry sucks ass as a coach. If he were competent, this team would not be below .500 in SEC play when Ole Miss is already a ranked team with Chris Beard there in his second season there,

I think Terry is the first hire CDC has handled poorly. He never felt like a long term solution. A stopgap hire to keep all of Beard’s players.

I’ll concede RT had some upside as a recruiter, but almost zero upside as a coach. They’re not playing in the Mountain West. Out-talenting teams was never going to work.

Yeah there's talent on this team, but RT's coaching deficiencies are too much to overcome for this team to be great.

It’s gotta be Lloyd. That seems to be the clear best fit imo. We shoulda done this last year.

Meaning... in the past (the beginning), I didn't want him to be our coach. Today (the middle), I don't want him to be our coach. And in the future (the end), I will not want him to be our coach.

I don’t think CDC handled it poorly either - I just don’t think he had to hire Terry. Had he hired Mark Few, who purportedly had interest, no one worth a damn in this industry bats an eye. There’s no “my hands are tied” if a legitimate top-10 coach in college basketball wants to come to your school in lieu of a guy who would never be considered for an interview under normal circumstances.

Anyways, here’s to hoping this shitshow is sorted out soon. Go on a run and make the tournament, or please make it super apparent you need to be fired, RT.

Yeah. Worst case scenario is we sneak into the tournament, and lose in the round of 32. I think CDC gives RT at least another year if he does that. Next year's team will be worse without Tre and to me the program's trajectory is pretty clear 📉

Your wish is my command, JJ.

However, I will ask you this: who’s your pick for Terry’s successor?

eh, he could win at Vandy and go 3-2 in the last 5 and make the tournament at 8-10.  Everyone says 8 wins in the big bad SECSECSEC is assured a tourney invite. or at least that what I've been told.

saw CDC at the game. wonder what he thought of that.

As literally everyone with a modicum of common sense could tell you before we hired him "This is the Rodney Terry Experience" - 6/7 seed to no tourney is the sine wave you will ride.

Good news is he can still get a decent assistant coach gig, make some coin for 5 years or so and retire better than 99% of the people in this country so good on him.

I can't help but wonder what are the Texas basketball aspirations.

If at best, we hope to compete for an occasional conference championship and more often than not, fail at that .. then keep him.

However, if our aspirations are consistently a deep run in the tournament with a realistic chance of playing for a championship ... Coach Terry is not our man. Not even in the same zip code as who we need.

Now, he is not Coach Potato bad.

But to believe that Coach Terry will lead our proud university to relevancy in the tournament is idiocracy.

I don’t think anyone in power thought RT would deliver. I think they hoped he would.
I can tell you that the crew I run with, run with the top of the food chain, and they all want to win big, and believe CDC does too.

at this point there’s no reason not to trust cdc’s judgement when it comes to evaluating his current coaches and then replacing them with better ones. i have total faith in CDC.

Texas needs better basketball fans and donor support in addition to whoever the hire is if that is the "aspiration".

College basketball is very cult-driven and Texas doesn't have that cult. Texas could improve in that area but it isn't just money and recruiting and coaches that gets you to the Final Four over and over again.

None of the best programs since 2000 (or ever, really) are worth a shit in football. The closest you get is Michigan State and UNC. MSU hasn't had a title in 25 years and UNC is going through a weird spot right now.

Look at programs like Duke, Kansas or UCONN. Basketball is EVERYTHING there. All of them historically suck dick at football. They don't give a fuck about anything else.

Texas will never have that and never be those programs.

That said - Texas could absolutely replicate the best stretches of programs like Michigan, tOSU and Florida and do so consistently. But - it's going to take more than hiring the right coach - and even if Texas does hire the right guy - Texas is never going to be Kansas or Duke. You could hand the reins over to a 45 year old coach K and it wouldn't turn out that way.
