carr and rice both shot 37% from deep but neither was a knock down shooter. also, as a team we shot .347 from deep (156th nationally) on 20.8 3pa/gm (219th). it was by no means a great shooting team, or a team that relied on shooting. in fact, one of the most impressive things about that team by far was its individual and collective basketball iq. we tried to take practice reps and get good looks on offense as often as possible. just a very well coached and well drilled team full of senior, experienced players, as you mentioned. not the most naturally gifted team ever, but the whole team played with a high iq and high effort. i miss that.

Carr was absolutely knockdown that season. His shot difficulty was extremely high for a lot of those attempts. You could not leave him open - he got doubled the entire backhalf of conference play.

I miss those guys too lol.

What the fuck does a terrible hire look like, lulz.

Billy Gillispie is a really good coach.  I mean he won Big 12 Coach of the Year twice, and was also SEC Coach of the Year.  The dude took UTEP to the tourney in year 3 and took AGGY to the freaking Sweet 16 and a #7 final KenPom ranking. Now he is at Tarleton, one of the worst programs in D-1, and cranked out a 25-10 record last year.

The dude has had three DUIs.  If he got his alcohol issues under control, he could have been one of the great coaches in college basketball.  He was a perfect fit for Texas Tech, where his hard nosed style could work with the caliber of players Tech is likely to get (but never could work somewhere like Kentucky).

He reminds me of Chris Beard in many ways.

carr was up and down. he didn’t shoot a consistent 37% on a nightly basis, he’d go 10 for 15 and 5 for 9 and then have nights where he shot 2 for 9, 0 for 7, or 1 for 6. he was a knock down shooter on his good nights, but he was equally poor on his bad nights as well.

10 for 15 is absurd though. all time great shooting performance.

Texas made a mistake the first time they hired RT due to outside pressures. If this team somehow managed to get to the Sweet 16 because we have a generational talent on the roster who can get hot in any game, Texas would be making another mistake to not make a change at the head coaching position. Being in the bottom half of the league and potentially getting hot in the tourney does not make a top 10-15 program. The program and the fan engagement have been regressing since Beard was let go. CDC works too hard to generate fan excitement for our athletic programs to be ok with what's happening here.

Because alcoholism is a disease that doesn't care how much you make.

Money does NOT, in fact, change who you are. It just eliminates financial restrictions that might have kept you in check.

What do they say? Multiply each DUI by 100 for every other time they've driven drunk and not gotten caught? Can pretty safely make that at least 1000 for ol' Billy Clyde. Including about a dozen times he was pulled over and given a "Get home safely, Coach." A modern miracle that he hasn't killed anyone yet.

Dude could coach ball though.

I don't understand this trend of RT not getting credit for Tre Johnson being on the team. No shit the team wouldn't be as good without Tre. But he's - part of the team. This staff went out and got him.

"Syracuse in '03 only won the title because Melo was there - outside of him that team wasn't special"

It's not like Tre was sitting there shooting buckets at Greg the past 10 years just waiting to see who he'd play for.

Yea listen I don’t think Rodney is the guy for us but you can’t blame him for all the shit and then not credit him for the good stuff.

Australia and G League, yes.  I'm just saying if we're going to laud RT for landing Tre Johnson then we should at least be somewhat critical of him not being able to keep Johnson and Holland in the fold.

And once again, I'll ask:  who is next year's Tre Johnson?

Sure, I’ll go with you on that. But, at the same time, the team around him was not built to compete in the SEC. That was obvious to most of this board early on in the season.
His failure to be able to land Toppin, whether that was not convincing donors to chip in or otherwise cancels it all out.

Alluded to a 2nd weekend is probably needed.

Also said something along the lines of Indiana going after Buzz would be the wrong move because a NBA offensive mind is needed there and is also needed at “ a certain SEC school when that job opens” or something like that.

Wut?  I thought it was an open secret that Scott Drew is taking the Indiana job and Grant McCasland is replacing him in Waco.  Admittedly I've been out of pocket most of the day but did that much change since yesterday?

Pat Knight never made the NCAA tournament.  RT is 2/2.

Tubby Smith left Tech for Memphis after being named Big 12 COY.

Mark Adams resigned because he's an idiot and said something galactically stupid to an athlete.

Pat Knight was 91-29 in 3 seasons at Lamar including a Conference Title and an NCAA Tourney bid.  That is a better resume than Terry had before we hired him.  But mainly I meant that Tech was compelled to hire him because of Bobby Knight, regardless of whether he was qualified for the job.  Maybe not the best comp though for how we were compelled to hire Terry.

Tubby Smith was 46-50 at Tech. Yes, he finally made the tourney as an 8-seed in his final year at Tech (where he went 19-13).  His tenure there was very disappointing considering he averaged 21 wins a year at Minnesota (not to mention his success at UK).  He wasn't popular at Tech and both parties were happy to part ways.

Mark Adams resigned under pressure because he was a weirdo who divorced his wife and married his dead brother's widow, which was a huge distraction to him and ultimately the team.  His player discipline and quoting of master/slave bible verses was just the excuse they needed to get rid of him for cause.  If Mike Krzyzewski had made those statements, it is barely a blip on the news radar.

Dude, a simple google search will debunk a lot of this.  Tech was Pat Knight’s first job due to nepotism.  He was also an abysmal 29-62 at Lamar AFTER Tech fired him.  Rodney Terry won a conference tourney at Fresno and has a winning record as a head coach.  He made the tourney at Fresno and is at least a mediocre coach.  To compare him to Pat Knight is quite frankly insulting.  I’m not saying he’s the right man for Texas, but I am saying that facts are important.  It’s pretty incredible that you can continue to make false statements when the correct data is so easy to find.

This is bizarre.  Did you look up the wrong coach?  Knight STARTED at Tech and was sub-0.500 over 3+ seasons.  He was hired at Lamar, had a decent first season (division title, NCAA First Four) and then shit the bed for 2 straight years (a combined 6-50).

Simple answer: I'm a moron on multiple levels.  I confused the dates. And then I somehow was looking at Games as wins, and wins as losses. Holy hell.  I usually don't make mistakes like that.

Of course he could have done a better job with this roster - and last year's. But Tre was a big get and is proving why.

Depends.  A new coach brings a new cache of potential transfers.  Good ones, too.

RT? Dunno, but probably not going to be pretty.

Posted

well, we’ve currently got one commit for next year, and he’s not someone who’s ready to make a real impact at this level. as far as the transfer portal goes there aren’t going to be any tre johnsons moving schools, and finally, our entire coaching staff is probably gone after this year, so i’d say that as of right now nobody is going to replace tre johnson, and that several somebodies are going to have to replace kaluma, shedrick, mark, larry, onyema, tre, kent, RT, his staff, and possibly every single other remaining player, including the one current HS commit.

My point, which apparently wasn't clear, is that RT isn't going to land a Tre Johnson, so I think we can reasonably consider the likelihood that this team will be even worse next year if RT is retained, regardless of tournament success.  With a new coach?  Well, that's a bit more of an open case.

I'll worry about next season's roster when I know who the coach is going to be.

We had AJ Johnson and Ron Holland committed in February 2 seasons ago.

Holy smokes, what is the difference?  He get credit for Tre not doing the same, but can't be criticized for not keeping one or both of those guys in the fold?

He mostly lives by the portal.  I'm happy to see how that plays out but it doesn't seem like he's putting together elite, synergistic rosters.

It's a fairly material difference. Neither of them played college basketball.

Wasn't there a potential grades issue with one of them?

Johnson has looked like nothing but a flameout already, btw. He may have been okay at Texas but nothing close to what Tre has been.

Holland would have been great at Texas but I doubt he regrets his decision. He went 5th in the draft and as a rookie is a rotational player on a pretty good Pistons team.

Next year our team currently looks like this:

  • G - Jordan Pope, SR - 6'2, 165
  • G - Chendall Weaver, SR - 6'3, 164
  • F - Devon Pryor, JR - 6'7, 180
  • F - Nic Codie, SO - 6'8, 200
  • C - Jamie Vinson, SO - 6'11, 225
  • ------------------------------------
  • G - Malik Presley, RS-SO - 6'6, 210
  • F - John Clark, FR - 6'9, 238 - 4-star

That looks a little rough, but we should get at least marginal improvement from everyone.  A starting lineup of Pope + Weaver + Pryor could be pretty good.  Codie and Vinson also both have potential.

I think we could get a surprise great year out of Pope when he has to be the leader and main scoring option.  Weaver and Pryor also bring a ton of athleticism.  Pryor has been improving and could be great next year.  We haven't seen Presley, and he could also be a contributor next year.

But the bottom line is that the team will largely be built through the portal.  For me, the top priority is to get an awesome lead guard with elite competitiveness and distribution skills.  Second priority would be to get a couple of bigs who can dirty it up and bang.

Honestly, next year will be an easier rebuild than this year where we only kept Weaver, an injured Shedrick, and Pryor (who hadn't played yet).
