our guards are way too meh to be a top 10 team.  that said, a good coach probably wouldn't be in this position with his guards.

Lol not wrong. Pretty sure the CW by this board was we’d probably be looking for a new coach after the 2025 season

I don’t agree with this as the team has some obvious limitations, but yes, they should be better.
I wouldn’t be surprised to eventually learn that there is some kind of screwed up dynamic with the players. I don’t say that for any reason other than just watching how they interact with one another and the coaches. Also, I’m not really sure that there is any leadership on the team.  Johnson seems the most vocal but most of the time when he’s telling someone something they won’t even look at him.

How many more games does this team win with a different coach?

Outside of Johnson and Kaluma, this team doesn't have the talent of a Division I basketball team, much less one in the SEC.

Ultimately everything falls on the coach, but this team is garbage.

It is odd to say we don't have the talent of a D-1 basketball team when most of our players have been successful starting for other D-1 teams

  • Tre Johnson - Probably top-5 pick and the 2nd best freshman we have ever had
  • Arthur Kaluma - Started 37 games for an Elite 8 Creighton team
  • Tramon Mark - Started 37 games on a Sweet 16 Houston team (and was a 20 mpg contributor their Final Four team)
  • Jordan Pope - Leading scorer for a bad Oregon State team
  • Kadin Shedrick - Started 34 games for Virginia team that got two #4 seeds
  • Julian Larry - All MVC on a team that won the NIT
  • Jayson Kent - All MVC on a team that won the NIT

Plus Chendal Weaver, Devon Pryor, Nic Codie, and Jamie Vinson - All of whom would be starting for at least half the D-1 teams in the country.

Talent and construction of the team isn't the problem.  This is one of the more talented teams top to bottom that we have had.  Coaching has been horrendous.

A better coach would have beaten Ohio State (lost by 8), Auburn (lost by 5), Ole Miss (lost by 3), at Arky (lost in OT), Tennessee (lost by 4).  Maybe more than that.

yeah, i’ve said this all year and ain’t shit changed: this is a top 25/S16 roster with a better coach.

IMG_5946.thumb.jpeg.2003f97dd92dbde899546677e025a864.jpeg

i’d venture to say that our roster is superior to those of arkansas, uga, vandy, miss st, ole miss, and a&m. this team is wildly inferior to the sum of its parts. this team should be favored seed, tourney shoo-in. we’re so far from being what we should be it’s crazy. tre might be the only one on the team living up to his own potential. total waste of talent and good players. this roster is not at all far off from the one that was no.1 in kenpom and went to the E8 a couple of years ago. very similar talent wise. we’ve just wasted it.

There are at least 5 to 6 surly posters that could coach this team to 12 conference victories.

Surly posters? They would be the next John Wooden if it wasn't for the complete lack of qualification and ability to coach basketball standing in their way of getting hired anywhere by anyone. They would probably also run the touchdown play all the time and be the next Saban. Maybe CDC will see the light someday.

CDC's modus operandi is to not fire until he has his replacement lined up. Even if the BMDs are driving the hiring direction, CDC still covers the operational side.

if the bmd's start dictating to cdc how to do things, it'll be a step in the wrong direction

LOL how? Is RT leaving Michael Jordan on the bench or something that I'm unaware of?

This team does not have top 10 talent

They have certainly more than 5-11 SEC play talent. But not top 10 talent.

Have you watched them play at all?

Yeah, no.  We have no inside presence and no real point guard.  The ceiling of this team with good coaching is still probably .500 in SEC.

A good coach would have this team as currently constructed 8-8 in the SEC

An elite coach would somehow have this team 9-7 or maybe 10-6

An average coach would probably have this team at least 6-10 or 7-9

RT is 5-11

That all sounds reasonable to me

None of that is a top 10 team

We simply don't have the horses to be a top 10 team. And that is not a defense of RT in any way. It's just reality.

Great guy. Great assistant. The only thing that sucks about firing him is he can’t stick around in a demoted role. BUT this is big boy rules and he’s just not getting it done.

That's not the way to do it.  He needs a negotiated landing spot like Shaka & Marquette.

Say, UTEP.

Lol UTEP, UTSA, UTA, UTRGV - get ready to have a coach forced upon you by the BOR

That would be great. I’m just saying it sucks we HAD to promote him to HC now we have to get rid of him when it didn’t work. I think he was really valuable as an assistant.

RT's career record screams average coach at the D1 level. He just happens to be coaching in the strongest league in the country. Shaka looked like dogshit in the BigXII and looks better comparatively in a weaker conference. I dont absolve RT, as the roster is his responsibility, but this season was lost before it began. No frontline talent or depth. No PG worth a shit. And very few shooters. Doesn't sound like a recipe for success in the strongest conference in many years. If it wasnt for Tre, we could arguably be winless in conference.

I think everyone is underestimating how much impact a top-5 coach would have on a team like this.  In my view the difference between a top-10 and a top-40 team isn't all that great.  Hell, we almost beat #2 Auburn and #4 Tennessee with shitty RT.  And we actually beat #12 Mizzou, #18 Kentucky and #22 Aggy.  The problem is consistency and getting a team to do the little things that result in close wins.  And keeping their focus to avoid the blowouts.

We currently have a team full of individuals, playing individual defense and one on one hero ball offense.  A great coach would elevate everyone individually, but also have them working like a well oiled machine such that the sum is better than the parts.

Hot take, but this team is more talented than the one that Beard took to the National Title game.  We have some players who can play individual defense, but Beard would have them working as a unit, switching and helping and masking all the deficiencies.  He would smother teams with a lineup of Larry + Mark + Trey + Pryor/Kent + Kaluma.  And his boring motion offense would make a guy like Kent look like the all-conference player he was at Indiana State.  The team is already pretty efficient on offense, shoots FTs and 3s well and doesn't really turn the ball over.  Perfect for Beard.

Or imagine if Dan Hurley had this squad, they would be one of the top offensive teams in the country, out running in transition and maximizing all the individual abilities.  Coaches like Hurley or Bill Self would have Jordan Pope and Mark playing like different players.

like i said, we have a better roster than like six teams that are ahead of us in the sec, including teams that have been in the top 15-25 all year long. the roster isn’t the problem.

A good coach probably wins 1 Arkansas game, South Carolina and Georgia (8-8)

A great coach probably wins both Arkansas games + South Carolina/Georgia (9-7)

An elite coach wins one of Tennessee or Auburn on top of the other 4 games (10-6)

It's all fucking coaching.

Still not buying it.  Several of those teams have physically kicked our asses.  No coach can fix that without different players.

Arkansas - kicked our asses inside down the stretch.  They had a post game to get easy baskets, we did not.

Vanderbilt - their big guy kicked our ass right from the whistle and their big stocky guard could not be handled by our guards at crunch time

those teams do not have better rosters than texas. neither does a&m, ole miss, miss state, or georgia. again, our roster is not the reason our team sucks. the fact that we hired a guy who wasn’t anything other than mediocre in conferences five rungs below ours is the reason.

I don't disagree that RT is problem #1, but our inside game is dogshit.  Getting around that for any coach would be a hurdle.  I think a great coach could fix or even exploit our smaller guys.

you guys have battered fan syndrome. it is NOT the roster.

IMG_5993.thumb.jpeg.734a940fd48aa9cfadfcc83c13c62819.jpeg

that roster has no centers, no shooters, a total of two players taller than 6’7”, a total of three guys who aren’t subpar athletes, zero nba players, and nobody remotely close to as good as tre johnson, and they were no.1 in kenpom and went to elite 8. *if* that roster is better than our current one then it’s marginally better. how quickly you guys forget that a good coach is worth an entire roster of better players.

The interior needs to be a complete overhaul. Portal can fix.

chris beard would take shedrick, onyema, pryor, kaluma, and tre and have this team defending the paint and rebounding better than 80% of this league.

Our roster deficiencies come down to the inability to get easy baskets or stop easy baskets at the end of close games.  Arkansas just started trapping Tre and we had no way to reliably score.  Meanwhile they did have a way.  And it's because of our roster.  A coach can scheme up all kinds of looks but you have to have players who can get to the rim and finish so you aren't relying on shots to fall all the time.   We have one guy who can take it to the rack and  finish.  Take him away and we are totally reliant on hitting outside shots.  Barnes best teams always have multiple guys who can finish.  So do most of the SEC teams above us.  We don't have enough dudes.  I thought Mark was a second one but he isn't.  Kaluma is, but only against bad teams.  He can't finish against good front lines.   So have one stud, two role players, and a bunch of jags.

texas a&m has one player over 6’7” and can’t score to save their lives and yet they dominate the glass, are 2nd in the sec in 2-pt fg% defense, and are an unequivocally better team than Texas, despite our superior roster.

Two things can be true at the same time.  From my vantage point at Moody, we get pushed around inside because Shedrick is weak strength wise and Onyema shouldn’t even be on our roster.

Did you see what happened when an undersized DL from Arizona State did when motivated against our much bigger OL?

If a true hardass coach would completely toughen up this soft ass squad. Last year’s team was super soft as well. It is almost like many of you have never played actual competitive sports.
