Hell they should have made it without that damn blocking out call on Brock Cunningham

Or if Disu doesnt get hurt. Lotta what-ifs about that Miami game. That game still pisses me off.

Damn whoever coached that team to the Elite 8 must have been a great coach. We should hire him next

That team is in the final 4 if somebody's dumbass glasses don't get knocked off their face.

Great guy. Great assistant. The only thing that sucks about firing him is he can’t stick around in a demoted role. BUT this is big boy rules and he’s just not getting it done.

How do we know he is a great guy?  Posters here always said that about Charlie Strong, like a caveat to preempt getting called a racist for criticizing a black coach.  I don't think anyone knows these coaches and what they are really like.  Strong had some pretty apparent character flaws.

People say the same about David McWilliams. People don’t say the same about Mackovic or Herman, because they were pricks. Terry has been around Texas for a while and has apparently treated people well. Let’s not make this anything more than that.

Makes me wonder what a better coach could have done with that team.

I mean it’s just funny to claim that 1) coaches matter, and 2) the elite 8 team that RT coached was a worse team than the current team that RT is coaching

Correct.  Terry = decent guy.  Charlie = not really.  Both black.  No racism

chris beard would take shedrick, onyema, pryor, kaluma, and tre and have this team defending the paint and rebounding better than 80% of this league.

But then he would just beat up his girlfriend and make it all a moo point

you guys have battered fan syndrome. it is NOT the roster.

that roster has no centers, no shooters, a total of two players taller than 6’7”, a total of three guys who aren’t subpar athletes, zero nba players, and nobody remotely close to as good as tre johnson, and they were no.1 in kenpom and went to elite 8. *if* that roster is better than our current one then it’s marginally better. how quickly you guys forget that a good coach is worth an entire roster of better players.

My assumption is that all coaches from the pros down to the junior high level are assholes until proven otherwise.  About 90% of my coaches over the years were assholes, regardless of the sport, with my UT track coach being the biggest one of all.

You could say the same for drill sergeants.  And probably executives.

I don’t care if he’s green or polka dotted. All the players have nothing but great things to say about him, how the team rallied around him and supported him during the beard incident, interviews, etc.  Hell, he did 2 ten year stints here.  That doesn’t mean he’s good enough to do the job at a place like Texas, but it does sound like a nice guy though. I don’t remember anyone saying how “nice a guy beard was!” Or Tom Herman being a wonderful person.

I thought Charlie was too soft on them. People who recruit other people for a living, and are decent at it, probably have some charisma and pizzaz. Probably why they get that rap.

Not true.

I will say I think that he's likely a good dude. But his players don't particularly adore him and think he's kind of a weirdo.

Granted - a lot of high school and college players don't love their coaches.

The team he inherited seemed to like him.   Certainly had his back at the press conference where he got emotional.

After Beard left Texas Tech, Tech promoted an assistant to head coach, fired him after a couple of years, and now their new coach has them in the top 10 heading into March madness. I want that for us.

Are you talking about the elite eight guys? Very different situation.

@Derka has not been wrong that we have underachieved this roster and a better coach would have us in the top 15-25, if not higher

r/CollegeBasketball - Which CBB teams have overachieved based on their roster talent this year? This graph shows every team's roster talent ranking compared to their resume quality ranking at EvanMiya.com. Teams who have exceeded expectations are under the black line.

I’m not sure how some of you have managed to talk yourself into this possibility.

of course i don’t think we’re making the S16, i simply said that even if we did that RT should be fired.

Well yes he should but if that miracle happened, you and I both know he wouldn’t be fired.

Getting to use to this.

Back in the Sweet 16 again.

Maybe sort of till the next game again

This is better than the "Electric Eel" was at Sea World.

We're either making the Sweet 16 or losing to OU by 20 at home.

No telling which one.

mick cronin is a psycho, but this is why i’ve always liked him- particularly the second part about recruiting winning players:

barnes and beard understood that, and for me, this type of mind frame (and it being an obsessive, 24/7 thing) is the difference in the winning coaches and the shaka smarts of the world. you have to know what type of team you’re trying to build and what archetype of player fits in your system. this is why barnes and beard always have “barnes guys” and “beard guys” on their teams. barnes didn’t luck into royal ivey, isaiah taylor, grant williams, admiral schofield, and zakai ziegler, those guys all fit the archetype(s) of what he’s looking for, and he could give a damn about their recruiting ranking or how many stars they have.

this is what we *have* to have from our next coach- a clear identity, and the ability to identify the players who fit that identity. that’s what gives your program a high floor year in and year out and a chance to make deep tourney runs with relative regularity.

Good job wasting 3 years Money Dudes, Rodney Terry buddies and former players that liked him.  holy shit.

maybe we can stop being idiots and quit listening to the media.
