One of the all time black eyes for CDC is going to be this hire. Huge error on his part. Got swept up in the emotion of the run and made a very bad decision without conducting a proper search. Hopefully he learned his lesson so nothing like this ever happens again.

Yeah, but it was over here. He wasn't building anything.

That Shaka guy looks good at Marquette. Let’s hire him back!

At the end, his current players were telling recruits not to come here. The program was stagnant and the results on the court were regressing. 1 tournament win in his last 4 seasons.

Same thing with Shaka. It was time. Just because they are succeeding elsewhere doesn’t mean they should have been retained or given more time at Texas.

Sounds like Texas is the problem then.

Anyone with a brain won’t ding CDC for that hire. He was in an impossible situation from an optics standpoint. In the end, he did the sensible thing with the $3MM per year deal that I am sure won’t be extended.

Yep. No one will ding him for cutting bait after 2 full seasons.

Well, Tito’s is made in Texas. So I mean, I guess your statement is accurate depending on how you’re looking at it.

Impossible situation? Everyone and their brother knew that Terry was a terrible hire. Almost nobody here thought he deserved the job. But CDC decides to give it to him without even conducting a coaching search. This is a product of CDC getting swept up in the emotion of the moment.

Yes, because coaches aren’t allowed to adapt or get better at other jobs.

Not like we currently employ a football coach who was a mediocre coach at other stops before evolving into what he is today.

If you think this, you don’t know anything and are just going by recency bias.

That's revisionist history. Everyone had concerns, but most understood that there was no world where we could not hire him unless there was a slam dunk hire to be made. And there was no such candidate available at the time. I'm sure there was some back channeling with the guys we'd all be thrilled with (e.g., Donovan), but when they didn't bite we were stuck.

The optics of hiring someone without real skins on the wall over the Black interim head coach that damn near got us to the Final 4 could have set this program back much further with recruits than we are now. CDC had the long term view in mind, and made the best decision possible in a really bad situation.

Sometimes all the options are bad and you need your leader to choose the least bad option. I think CDC did his job there, just as I have confidence he will do his job here when the time comes.

So we threw away 2 years of our program for political optics? Cool. Maybe CDC will remember his job is to make tough decisions and not cave to the woke mob. Pretty sad that 90% of the board knew the hire was an abject dud but "optics" prevented us from conducting a proper search.

And that's fine. He did the right thing.

I will disagree until the cows come home, but that's because I dont bend my knee to "optics". I guess we are all just gonna give this abortion of a hire a free pass because of that. Cool cool.

A bit more than just political optics if you just stopped and gave an ounce of thought to it. What do you think the schools we recruit against might have said about UT in a world where CDC ran off Terry after that tournament run?

That’s weak ass bullshit. They do that anyway. Decisions made out of fear are rarely good ones.

"TeXaS iS RaCiSt BeCaUsE.... they didnt give a head coaching job to a guy that never achieved success at any level of basketball EXCEPT when he was handed the keys to the ferrari" And I would argue that he underachieved by losing to Miami. Choked a massive second half lead.

But hey, we may have wasted two seasons, but at least nobody thinks we are racist now, even though the coach before Beard was black too.

I had no problem hiring Rodney Terry.

If he doesn't produce, I'll have no problem letting him go.

Spoken like someone that has zero appreciation for how much relationships matter in this sport. And they matter in all sports, but I'd argue that they matter more in basketball than any other revenue generating sport.

i mean look at every other decision that CDC has made in his time here. He generally doesn't fuck up. So maybe a different way to think about this situation is to trust that he actually did make the best decision possible under super shitty circumstances.

Or just sit back in your lazy boy and criticize a guy that has done well enough to ascend to one of the best AD roles in the whole country. I'm sure your professional accomplishments are just as impressive.

Getting your ass waxed by 20 points by the aggies in your SEC opener is pretty fucking pathetic. This dude is gonna set our program back 2-3 years.

Nobody is advocating to fire CDC. People are criticizing him for fucking up this hire. Which he did. Unless you think this is an acceptable product on the floor. This is pathetic.

That’s impossible to do in the portal era of college basketball.

We all thought Shaka did this and 2 years later were playing in the Elite Eight.

Our football program wandered the desert for over a decade, but one good hire was able to right the ship in ~2 years. With NIL and the portal, Rodney Terry is incapable to doing irreparable harm to our program. He got his chance. All indications are that he'll come up short and we will move on. That's hardly the end of the world in my book. There are a ton of great things to see and do in Austin in the spring. Some of you guys should check them out.

I was accounting for the 2 seasons he is coaching plus 1 year to rebuild.

Well, I’m younger than him and retired so at least that I’ve got that going for me.  What about you?
Since you are so fucking smart, show me where I criticized CDC for making the Terry hire?  You won’t find it. The reason you won’t is because it wasn’t his fucking decision.

Fuck off.

I'm a decade younger than CDC and could easily retire if I wanted to. But I'd be bored and I like making money.

You said "Decisions made out of fear are rarely good ones" (among other things), which I could only assume was pointed at CDC's decision to hire Rodney Terry due to the optics of making a different decision. Go ahead and tell me what I got wrong there and then I'll give some thought to fucking off.

Chris gets a pass for this one.

He'll need to swing for the fences on the next one, though.  Hopefully, in 4 months.

Agree, we need a homerun hire. No excuses for CDC this time.

ha. he didn't get swept up in the emotion of the "big run"(which was basically meeting our seed), he was afraid of what would be said if we didn't hire him.

Haha, I know man. I was trying to avoid politics. We all know why this hire was made. Sad that he didnt stand up for what was right because everyone knew would happen if he got hired.
