yeah let’s trot that out there for the next few years against our SEC foes as we completely rebuild the roster with a guy who has never even recruited at this level before.

come on guys, this is ridiculous. ben mccollum went viral in twitter back in december and like three days later a bunch of y’all are in here swearing up and down that he needs to be our next hire when you don’t even know anything about him. this is a silly discussion.

You get so lost in kenpom it's hilarious. Dude wins, google him.

if you think that ben mccollum is ready to out recruit, out coach, and out-program-build the likes of beard, barnes, pearl, oats, etc then i’ve got some ocean front property in the chisholm point trailer park to sell you.

One problem with "big game hunting" is that a lot of the big game is getting up there in years (Self, Izzo, Cal (*cough), Pitino (*cough), Barnes, Altman, Few).  We wouldn't even think of pursuing a couple of them and most of the others would be uninterested.  Beard's out of the question.  I doubt Hurley would consider it, but I guess you ask.  Same with Oats.

Pretty soon you're taking chances, and understandably so.

Beard, Barnes, Pearl, and Oats aint coming here so what's next? The UCLA guy who is constantly bitching about everything and sounds like a pussy?

As Jimmy notes above, we will have to choose...do we want to go older big game hunting or go with the next big thing type hire essentially.

I guess one silver lining is that we're (probably) doing this before KU, MSU, UTenn, Ark, St. John's, Oregon, Houston & Gonzaga (among others), and most of them will be facing the same problem.

Just off the top of my head, a guy like Tommy Lloyd would get me a hell of a lot more excited than a guy with zero experience. Lloyd is 50, made the tournament all three seasons as a head coach (two sweet 16's), and gets paid about what we paid Beard. With the financial problems that exist within the UA athletics department, I could absolutely see him bailing on UA.

That's cool,

Here are 22 schools with more final 4 appearances and also list their championships:

Obviously there are a lot of ways to measure the success of a program.  A team getting a Final Four or a Title in 1940-1970 isn't really that relevant as far as I'm concerned.  The KenPom "program ratings" take into account tourney success and computer rankings since 1997, which is longer than any recruit has been alive. And longer than many of their parents have even been actively following the sport.

Just going on the computer ranking, Texas falls to #14 and Florida, Ohio State, Louisville and Wisconsin jump ahead of us. That seems about right to me.

All that said, if a talented young coach is on the market, I don't think there are more than 4-5 schools that are more attractive than UT as a destination. Kentucky, Kansas, UNC... maybe UCLA and Duke.  I think that's it. That doesn't mean that we will be able to pry a good coach away from Arizona, UConn or Florida.  But if we are all bidding for an unattached coach, I think we win.

he’s a mark few disciple, he’s great at recruiting internationally, and he runs an exciting style that would pack the Moody center. He’s been near the top of the list ever since his first year at Arizona.

I could see this one, honestly.

International recruits would love Austin, compared to Spokane and Tucson.

Texas athletics uses $12m to wipe their asses.

Wait until april and its $9M if need be, but I aint worried about CDC figuring out the finances. The other factor unique to University of Arizona is how broke they are. The ath dept is running about a $30M+ annual deficit, so you know spending is tight. I'm sure there is always the chance that a big booster will kick in a huge donation if he was at risk of getting poached, but my guess is he would definitely take CDC's call.

Quote

Arnold discussed the Ernst & Young assessment of the athletics department, revealing a $33.6 million deficit with $95.2 million in revenues and$128 million in expenses for FY 2024.

The assessment suggested that operational changes could reduce the deficit to $1.7 million in FY 2025, by making $16 million to $24 million in operating improvements over the next three to five years.

The department forecasts a $9.1 million new revenue stream through ticket and parking, better development, and conference revenues, but also a $9.3 million revenue loss due to changes such as transitioning to the Big 12 conference and a new media rights contract.

“A big chunk of that is a one-time revenue that we sold our head football coach to the University of Washington,” Arnold said.

Potential operating cuts of $2.5 million include “expense transfers” of security, facilities costs, and the marching band budget to the College of Fine Arts.

An administrative service charge, not unique to athletics, which made up $7.1 million from charges to the colleges, will also be eliminated campus-wide.

The assessment revealed that the athletic department lacked established protocols and procedures in human resources, including hiring practices, compensation, bonus processes and merit increases, and budget procedures.

“The organizational structure hadn’t been looked at for a very, very long time,” Arnold said. “Several of the departments noted they didn’t know what their budget was and there seemed to be limited accountability, tracking or communication around [the] budget.”

Issues were also found in purchasing, particularly with travel expenses like lodging, meals, and the widespread use of corporate credit cards (P-cards).

The department was also underperforming in fundraising, ticket sales, and parking.

Athletics’ debt is divided into two parts: $171 million in outstanding principal for capital improvements to university facilities and $95.7 million in internal loans from the university over the last three years to cover operating deficits.

“At this time, we are not planning to forgive these debts, but we’re planning to change the debt service schedule that athletics owes back to the university and base it around net revenue instead of a set debt service schedule,” Arnold said.

And yet the last time few times we went out onto the open market to grab a coach we got Beard, Shaka, Barnes....all of whom had proven significantly more than a guy who has never faced a ranked Div I team in his coaching career. I would argue that coaching here in Austin is a more desirable gig than our historical "tier" standing would suggest. Resources are the name of the game, now more than ever, and we have resources few schools can match. If the best CDC can do is McCollum, I'll be shocked. My guess is CDC goes big game hunting if he's looking to replace RT this spring.

He basically has in every instance (except RT) when hiring coaches.

I don't have to guess. He absolutely will go big game hunting. That said, big game probably refers to "notable name" in this search. As has been said, we likely won't hire an older "big game" name.

Lastly, sign me the fuck up for Lloyd. That would be an amazing hire.

Would you give a shit if a coach at Texas ran the slowest offense in Texas history but won a national title? It's something really fucking retarded to try and use as a negative.

if we were talking about an elite coach who had proven that he could build a d-1 program from scratch and compete for national titles while running a slower paced offense (gee, that sounds like like someone familiar) then of course i wouldn’t care. but we aren’t talking about that. we’re talking about a guy with virtually no resume to speak of, who is nowhere near qualified to even interview for the Texas job. being that we’re talking about that guy, yeah, i most definitely care what style of basketball i’m going to be (considering) watching as my team gets run over by 30 every night.

What if we hired a coach that wasn't what you considered elite, ran a slow as fuck offense, but still won a title? Would you still bitch about it? Good to know you prefer style over substance when it comes to winning.

wanting to hire ben mccollum to coach Texas is like wanting to hire your four year old to build your new back patio because he’s been elite at making gingerbread houses in his pre-k classes.

That's just the plan to get him legitimate earned income so he can open up a Roth IRA at a super young age. Good thinking, Derka.

Does he have a D1 title that I’m missing?

I'm not talking about McCollum specifically. Just Derka using slow offense as a reason not to hire someone.

i didn’t say we shouldn’t hire him because he runs a slow offense, i said that we shouldn’t hire him because he’s not qualified for the job, and that watching his team pound the air out of the ball as we get blown out by our SEC opponents would just be adding salt to the wound.

it was more fun watching Texas lose 122-112 or whatever to LSU than it was watching Texas struggle to score 50 in tourney losses under terry and shaka. if we’re going to hire a kindergarten teacher to replace RT then let’s at least shoot the ball 100x a game.

Yet you posted his offenses slow pace as more justification.

I just want the program to win a national championship. I don't give a shit who the coach is, their style of play, whether moody is a concert, or if moody is a funeral. Winning brings fans, not style of offense.

I agree with Derka. All things being equal, who the fuck wants to watch 55-52 ball games every week as we sit in bottom of the conference.  But in reality, its a stupid fucking argument, because we aren't hiring a guy that has never even coached a single game against a ranked team in Division I basketball. Never gonna happen.
