Looks like RT has a whole week to prep the team to play the worst team in the conference in a game that is a must win.

He’s walking a fine line with little to no room for a dud if he wants to keep his job and the team wants to make the ncaa tournament.

Will be interesting to see if the team comes out with the fire they showed at the end of the Kentucky game.

Yay?

Texas ranks all time

- 9th in all time NCAA bids

- 22nd in EE appearances

- 28th in S16 appearances

That's what happens when you can't upset higher seeds in March.

The last time we beat a higher seed in the NCAA tournament was 2002 against Mississippi State. Since then we are 20-9 in the NCAA tournament as a higher seed, and a dismal 0-9 as a lower seed. Texas has consistently been one of the biggest March underachievers.

Years ago CDC laid out the standard for UT sports:  top 10 in the country in every sport.  I agree that (for instance) a 12 seed making a run to the Elite Eight is not the standard.  Is it laudable?  Sure.  But I would argue that the standard should be on average a top 3 seed, top 4 at the worst.  Certainlly not EVERY year but pretty regularly.  Whatever "composite" seed over time would be among the top 10 in the country.

Top 10 also means contending for conference titles, not making a run as a 10-12 seed after finishing 10th in the conference.

I wouldn't want to either. Texas isn't Kansas. Sweet Sixteens are and should be a big deal. Texas has almost four times as many CWS trips in baseball as it does sweet sixteens in basketball. And fans here act like two tournament wins grows on trees for Texas.

And just because a coach makes the sweet 16 doesn’t mean he’s a sweet 16 caliber coach (by the above definition)

But say he makes another one this season he would be averaging a sweet sixteen. You can asterisk the EE run if you like, but included in that asterisk is that it should have been a FF were it not for injuries.

This is all purely hypothetical, obviously.

I worry about this South Carolina game. They are absolutely desperate for a win and have played the #1 SoS so far in the SEC. And as Derka has pointed out, they have been very competitive in many of those games especially at home. That includes a 3 point loss to Auburn, 1 point loss to Florida, OT loss to Miss St, 4 pt loss to Aggy, 4 pt loss to Ole Miss. Holy fook.

I think there is a chance that we get blown out in that game if we come in expecting an easy win.

On the plus side, with a week to prepare I hope that Rodney has their attention.  Souf Carolina plays LSU on Tuesday. I'm hoping that they blow out LSU to ensure they get our team's attention.

That's fine but you don't just get to be a top 10 program because you'd like to be one. Men's basketball is by far for Texas the hardest sport to get to that level and stay at that level. Barnes had Texas there for about a decade but still only made one Final Four and never made a title game (thanks, Melo).

Texas fans are pining for something that has never happened here and judging RT against it. I think that that is partially fair because Texas obviously has the resources to pull it off - but I also think that fans need to be patient and realistic.

Going on a cinderella run(because that is what it would be) to the s16 isn't justification for the future of the program.

I'm not debating the standard I'm saying that getting men's basketball there is the toughest job that CDC has and that fans need to be reasonable.

Texas can absolutely do what Florida did in the 2000s but it's a fight uphill

RT is pretty assuredly not the guy that can pull it off but (hypothetically) you don't fire a guy that keeps winning in the tournament.

And I'll make it very clear since I think there is some conflation of hypotheticals and reality going on in here - based on what I've seen thus far this season I would say that RT needs to go. I will also say that there are a lot of games left and at the very least Terry deserves to prove himself over this final stretch.

Weird shit happens in college ball. Kevin Ollie won a national title with a 7 seeded UCONN team.

I just think it's going to come down to CDC's assessment of whether we can get better than where we are now.  I don't personally see a reason for that to be the case, but it's a new era, so who knows.  Fan engagement is plummeting, though, and that's a really bad indicator.

Put me on ignore then pussy. Like holy fucking shit you're literally trying to rationalize keeping arguably the worst coach on campus while also hedging. Keeping a coach just because he made E8 with another coaches roster and going on a cinderella run to s16 isn't justification to keep him. There is no future, period. Bring in a guy that gets Texas to the standard our athletic director demands.

I'm not really sure that's true.  We were eliminated in a Super on a total fluke play.  We looked like warm ass the next year and he got canned.  I doubt the previous year played that much into the decision.  I think his terrible management of his staff, etc. probably had more to do with it.

He should get another year if he pulls off a SS run. Anything short of that I want him gone.

Why should he get another year for a S16? So we can continue saying he needs to be fired? So the program continues downward trend? So NIL continues to dwindle? It's literally just delaying the inevitable and wasting everyone's time and money. No reason at all he should be saved because of a S16 appearance.

I look at a school like Texas Tech and have to respect the way they run their basketball program more than what we do at Texas.  When they hire a lemon of a coach, they move on way quicker than us.  And they aren't afraid to go get coaches with questionable pasts. If it doesn't work out, then they move on.

  • Bob Knight - Great hire. Took them from average Kenpom of 127 to 56 with a S16 and national relevance
  • Pat Knight - Bad hire, but fired after 3 years. This was kind of like our RT hire.
  • Gillispie - Great hire who should have been like Beard. But fired after 1 year due to his demons.
  • Chris Walker - Stepped in for a year. Then moved back to assistant Transition year.
  • Tubby Smith -  Good hire. Got a title & 3 E8 at UK. Solid at Minnesota. But bad at TT so they moved on in 3 yrs
  • Chris Beard - Went out and got him despite him taking the UNLV job 2 weeks earlier. Tremendous hire.
  • Mark Adams - Very good coach IMO. Took them to the S16. But is a weirdo and they moved on in 2 yrs.
  • Grant McCasland - Another really good coach. Outperformed at UNT and has TT humming this year.

Compared to Texas, they punch way above their weight on the coaching hires.  And honestly their fan support dunks on ours as well.

There are a lot of false statements in this post.

Pat Knight never made the NCAA tournament.  RT is 2/2.

Tubby Smith left Tech for Memphis after being named Big 12 COY.

Mark Adams resigned because he's an idiot and said something galactically stupid to an athlete.

You've framed this post incorrectly.

If you win at Texas, the fan will show.

Vic's first year - (doesn't count bc of covid and no fans) - makes E8 unexpectedly
Second year - 3500 fans (makes E8 again)
Third year - 5700 fans
Fourth year - 6800 fans (makes his 3rd E8)
Fifth year - 6400 fans

Guarantee if Vic makes the F4 this year, we will surpass 7k/game average attendance

10,500 for South Carolina.  RT only had 500 more fans for his matchup with Kentucky.

Mike White keeps setting attendance records at McCombs with sellouts.

Win and fans show up.  That is RT's issue - there's no enthusiasm because the product sucks butt and doesn't win.

I'm fine if people disagree on the hypothetical SS because I see both sides.

What I would say is that the grass isn't always greener, and in the current landscape of this sport the year-to-year turnover is extremely volatile.

If RT closes this shit out strong then I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that he assembles a good squad going into '26 and can compete in the conference. They did some really good work this past offseason despite falling flat in a key area in my opinion. Tre Johnson is the 2nd best freshman in Texas history and RT and co. went out and snagged him. Kaluma was a monster get. Mark has been clutch but inconsistent. etc.

I also believe in forgiveness and second chances and improving as a man. There's a chance that Terry could look at what the staff did well and what the staff didn't do well these past two offseasons and adjust accordingly.

He is extremely easy to root for and I have never seen his teams give up under any circumstance. That is a lot fucking more than I can say about someone like Shaka.

I thought they might fold against UK and quit on the season but they came in strong - missing their 2nd best player - and gritted out a win against a top 15 team.

I fucking like the guy. Sue me. I also agree that there is an expectation and standard that CDC wants to create and if he falls short of that then it's time to move on.

We'll see what they do down the stretch. I will say - someone earlier on this season said they were boring to watch. They ain't that.

To some extent I guess. Part of the issue too is that Texas isn't a basketball school and the basketball fans kind of suck.

If we make the Sweet Sixteen, it is going to be very hard for CDC to make the change, unless he has the absolutely perfect hire already lined up and ready to go and announce the next day.

We are better off flaming out and missing the tournament or losing embarrassingly in the Round of 64.  Otherwise, hard decisions to be made.

Might be right. I'd prefer it to go hard in one direction or the other. I'm still going to cheer for them the rest of the way. These guys have a je nais se quoi about them and Tre Johnson is a total pimp.

I want them to at least make the tourney and see what the fuck happens. I've watched too many Texas teams flame out or get bounced early to cheer against tourney wins so we can fire the coach.

If he isn't the guy it will become apparent by the end of this season.

this.  the first 10 years of Barnes is something I think is absolutely what you can replicate currently at Texas.

you really need a guy who is going to win 11-13 games a year in conference.  averaging 11 would be nice. if you do that you will have a high seed because you can work the OOS in your favor some.  If your goal is to win it all some day and be in the top 15 type of program, you really need to average about a 4 seed.  you can't do that going .500 or sub .500 in conference.

below 4 seeds have won the tournament a total of 3 times.  the 6 seed has basically a .500 record in the tournament, meaning they only hit a 50% clip of getting to the sweet 16.

I think Terry is an average P4 coach, not good, not bad.

I don't think he is a guy that is going to consistently put together teams that will win double digit conference games.  It just isn't in his history.

The players after losing in Aggy Regional said that the atmosphere on the team was toxic.

beard had us no.1 in kenpom in november of his second season, and that’s with a roster bereft of nba talent, no shooters, no size, and no athleticism. the team he built was so good that even after he was fired midsession for a domestic violence arrest, the squad still went to the elite 8 and probably should have gone to the Final Four, despite a clear and marked drop off in play after Beard’s departure.

that happened here, not very long ago, and now that we’ve been shown that Texas can absolutely become a basketball powerhouse in relatively short order, that’s what we’re going after with our next coaching hire. the last time we did a real life coaching search, the guy we hired had us no.1 in kenpom and going deep in the tourney basically overnight. that’s the level now. that wasn’t dumb luck, that was a great hire who did his job very well. that’s we are aspiring to now. that’s the level.

22-23:  2nd in the B12, Elite Eight run (taking over for Beard)

23-24:  7th in the B12, Round of 32

24-25:  currently 11th in the SEC, tournament TBD

This is a negative trajectory.  I expect something like 8-10 in conference, so roughly 9th or so.  Maybe an 8/9 seed if true?

As I asked before, who is next year's Tre Johnson?  He has a near 2 pt per game advantage on everyone else in scoring.  He's surely gone.  Next?

This program isn't going anywhere good.  We have no reason to keep RT around barring an epic tournament run, which isn't happening.  We did the right thing and he will get paid.

Before the start of the 2012–13 basketball season, allegations surfaced from former and current players accusing Gillispie of mistreatment. Fifteen players departed prematurely in the year after Gillispie arrived, a very high number for a college basketball program in a major conference. Also leaving were two strength coaches and two directors of basketball operations; some 30 persons overall.

What the fuck does a terrible hire look like, lulz.

Unless the team suddenly plays up to its potential and wins out, then makes a deep run in the SEC tourney followed by a deep NCAA run, Rodney Terry should lose his job no questions asked.

Carr and Rice were shooters. Stop. And that team averaged like 5 years of experience. Sure they weren't NBA players but that isn't what wins college games. That roster was filthy. That RT should have gotten them to the FF only reinforces that. Obviously part of coaching is roster assembly and Beard nailed that but that wasn't the fucking Bad News Bears that made the EE. That team had killers on it.

Also - I'm not sure there is a Chris Beard out there to hire.
