USC will suck, Utah will win the Big XII, LSU lost their OC, so it might set them back a year (no idea who Kelly replaced Denbrock with), ou will get hammered with Arnold as their starter (turnover machine), UM will beast out on D, and I can see them in the playoffs and they are more than capable of giving Day a mushroom tattoo on his forehead for the 4th year in a row. Who knows with Clemson? Easy conference, especially with FSU looking like they could win 8-9 or go 6-6. Klubnik is average, and Riley is meh, their D will keep them in every game.

I've always tried to get back down to Auburn for one game per year. Last season I couldn't make it work with my going to all the Pitt games.

This year Pitt is off Sept. 28 so I am going to see Oklahoma at Auburn. I'm excited.

This will be just my second time seeing the Sooners in person. The first came at Pitt in 1984 when they came in and kicked us in the teeth, 42-10.

Inside Texas' best college football preseason hot takes

by:Joe Cook•about 12 hours

IT member playawon got the weekend started right with a great discussion asking the Inside Texas Members Only board for their best hot takes and/or bold predictions ahead of the 2024 season. Here are some of the highlights from the almost 24 hour stream of takes.

playawon

This year’s Heisman Trophy winner is a Big 12 QB.

Bolden leads the Horns in receptions and receiving yards.

CoSLonghorn

WE’RE WINNING THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!!!!!

rodofdisaster

Dillon Gabriel will be a finalist. I feel confident in that.

I know the competition is tough, but I feel like this OL could win the Joe Moore Award.

I have a good feeling about individual awards. Ewers wins one. Perhaps a DB wins the Thorpe or Hill wins the Nagurski.

dick fingers

If a Big 12 QB wins the Heisman it’ll be Rising.

Other varying hot takes:

Michigan loses to all of Texas, USC, Oregon, and Ohio State

UF does the unthinkable and beats A&M (hater take)

A&M only wins 7 (hater take part 2)

Jackson Arnold throws 16 picks

bdwehner

The ACC will be hot garbage and as a result, Clemson will be wildly overrated.

theelusiveshadow

There are usually preseason top ten teams that turn out not to be top 10 teams. For example, last year LSU started at #5, USC was #6, and Clemson was #9.

My guesses for pretender top ten teams are #9 Michigan (will still be ranked at the end but QB will sink them in certain games) and… let’s say #5 Alabama due to some tough games. Other teams like Notre Dame and FSU have pretty manageable schedules, which will help their ranking throughout the season.

Now watch both teams kill it with first year coaches because I said this.

texaslove2

Florida gators 9-3.

Kansas or Iowa St. in playoffs.

gohorns8

This will be Deion’s last season in Boulder.

Not sure how hot that is considering what is coming out about the program but yeah.

STLaw

QE wins the Heisman

Texas beats Georgia by 10+

Texas has 3 first round picks

We recreate the infamous scoreboard kick on purpose just to watch Aggieland burn after the game

ABOESE

Jaylon Guilbeau wins the Thorpe…..

HornNRaiderLand

Dillion Gabriel becomes a Heisman finalist for completing 10 yard passes and having a 70% completion percentage doing so 😂

justin1996

UF will win 10 games. Ohio State will lose 3 or more games. Milroe wins the Heisman.

HornDPT

I’d say a hot take would be 4 first round picks.

Quinn Ewers
Kelvin Banks
Trey Moore
Alfred Collins
Isaiah Bond

Are all candidates to go early if they have either the season they expect to or have an insane season

Hooked#1

USC has 5 losses on the season

LSU has four losses on the season

Nebraska goes 7-0, then loses 5 straight

tOSU has two losses, and nether are Oregon

Dante Moore ends up QB1 for Oregon

HornsWin

Texas gets ranked #1 at some point.

Colorado will be bowl eligible.

JoeCook

UCLA goes 8-4 and beats USC.

The Outland goes to a non-Michigan DT.

Texas has three first-team All-Americans.

Bert Auburn wins the Lou Groza.

Texas loses one staff member to a head coaching job after the season.

TipOfTheHorn

Wisner has a better season than Blue.

judgesmalls

Nico wins the Heisman.

IMFletch

USC has 5 losses and Riley is looking for a job.

horns91

Sherrone Moore gets fired before seasons end. Trey Moore records 10+ sacks and becomes a first round draft pick. Quinn wins the Davey O’Brien trophy and leads us to a second consecutive playoff and we beat Utah in the playoffs to advance.

kazooman

Texas State makes the playoffs as the Group of 5 rep.

Michigan underachieves, but gets it together at the end of the year and beats OSU. Ohio State fires Ryan Day.

becook3108

USC beats LSU
UF beats Miami
A&M has 10 wins
VT wins the ACC
Colorado loses to NDSU
Brady Cook wins the Heisman

Texas goes 10-2 and Anthony Hill will take over as the premiere defensive player in CFB.

Zombie_Slayer

We beat Aggie by 21 on our way to the SEC title.

BEHR

Georgia does not make the playoffs. Losses to Alabama, Texas and Ole Miss, injuries, etc…

1benmike

Oregon will not make the playoff

eagleeye7277

North Carolina State plays for the ACC championship.

Arnold is benched mid season.

Colorado is looking for a new coach in the new year.

Two different Texas players win a year in national position award.

Florida goes over Vegas’s 4.5 wins and gets bowl eligible.

jacoblangston1

Both the Big 12 and ACC win a playoff game

4e_horn

A&M enters our game with them ranked in the top ten

younghorn01

No one in the SEC and Big 10 makes the natty

bvalday

Nebraska contends for B10 Championship

codeorange

Lincoln Riley shows he can still coach and USC surprises to the upside.

Texas handles Michigan easier than expected causing an overreaction by fans and the media. Michigan ends up losing 4+ games.

1NTXHorn1

The Heisman finalists will be Quinn, Jalen Milroe, Tetairoa McMillan, and Preston Stone

Coolllllhhj

USC will be the suprise team in CFB this year. Not maybe as good as Michigan in 2021 but a lot of similar vibes in that there is a coach going in with a ton of questions/hot seat, changes a lot of the coaches, and could play with a massive chip on their shoulder with as many people doubting them. I don’t see Riley just falling flat on his face

And don’t forget their schedule sets up nice. They don’t play the top two teams in the Big Ten, no late cold November road games, get LSU who normally starts slow under BK and also Michigan breaking in a new QB/staff early and also get ND at home against a QB with injury history at the end of the year

DocHorn11

Blue wins the Doak Walker

Rusty Shackelford

Arch ends the season as QB1

Paul Wadlington aka "Scipio Tex"

Last season, Washington and UCLA combined for 22 wins. This year they combine for 11.

Virginia Tech wins 10

Rutgers wins 8

CRAZY...

Boise State has named sophomore Maddux Madsen its starting quarterback for the 2024 season, according to 247Sports. Madsen beat out former 5-star recruit Malachi Nelson, who was seen as a favorite to win the job after transferring from USC.

Madsen appeared in nine games last season, throwing for 1,191 yards and nine touchdowns and rushing for another two scores. In his lone career start against New Mexico, Madsen completed 6-of-11 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-14 victory.

Now, Madsen takes over a Boise State offense that is ready to hit the next level. The Broncos ranked No. 26 nationally in total offense and cleared 40 points three times in their last four regular season games. Madsen also presents a serious rushing component with his mobile, stocky frame that forces the defense to account for him.

Nelson was a favorite to win the starting job after transferring from USC. The redshirt freshman ranked as the No. 13 overall player and No. 5 quarterback in the Class of 2023. However, he threw just one pass at USC and played the 2023 season as the third-string quarterback. Conversely, Madsen rated as the No. 110 quarterback and No. 1657 overall player out of American Fork (Utah) and fought his way to the starting job.

Madsen replaces Taylen Green, who transferred to Arkansas after two seasons starting with the program. He takes over a Boise State program that was picked overwhelmingly to win the Mountain West under first-year coach Spencer Danielson.

Boise State in ready-to-win mode

Choosing Madsen shows just how much pressure is on the 2024 season. Madsen boasts more experience and familiarity within Boise State's offense system after spending two years as a backup and should be quickly ready to step into a starting role and keep the offense rolling.

Nelson's arm talent jumps off the page, but he has gone through some of the normal tribulations of an underclassman. Unlike Madsen, Nelson has only gone through one spring of practices and is still getting comfortable in the system. Additionally, Nelson is still developing physically. Despite standing five inches taller than Madsen, Nelson weighs eight pounds fewer. In the physical Mountain West, Nelson has to prove he can protect himself.

In 2024, Boise State is choosing the high floor. The Broncos are seen as a potential favorite to make the College Football Playoff as a Group of Five team out of the Mountain West. Alongside Madsen, running back Ashton Jeanty and a stacked defense gives Boise State a high ceiling.

Setback for Malachi Nelson

Nelson heard from major national brands like Alabama, Miami and Texas A&M before picking Boise State as a transfer, according to 247Sports. A significant part of choosing Boise State was the chance to play right away for a serious College Football Playoff contender. Unquestionably, losing to Madsen was not part of the plan.

Since enrolling at USC as the perceived next in line to Caleb Williams, Nelson has been plagued with bad luck. He suffered a torn labrum before enrolling that limited him. Thanks to the issue, he was QB3 for the 2023 season. His struggles to put on muscle have also held him back.

The way Nelson handles the 2024 season could define his future as a quarterback. If he continues to prepare and get himself ready for prime time, there's an excellent chance he could start at some point this season, due to injuries or improved play. If he struggles with the setback, it could damage his stock for good.

FootballScoop's Group of Five dive: New coaches about but pressure mounts on many

JOHN BRICE         9 HOURS AGO

Sean Lewis is back as a head coach after parting with Deion Sanders, Colorado; key seasons away Clay Helton, Butch Jones, Will Hall and others

"It's the Sean Lewis coaching revenge tour."

It's been well-chronicled by now that Lewis and Deion Sanders, for reasons perhaps only those two ever will fully know, just didn't mesh together last year as Sanders arrived atop Colorado.

Coach Prime made a dashing hire when he plucked Lewis away from his head coach's post at Kent State to run the Shedeur Sanders-led Colorado offense.

But the mesh-point was a bad handoff instead.

Now, in the words quoted about from FootballScoop's own resident head coach, Doug Samuels, Lewis is back atop a program -- this time at San Diego State.

The Aztecs have a demanding schedule but an opportunistic one; they face Cal, Oregon State and Washington State in addition to their Mountain West foes, which notably includes Air Force and Boise State.

They're a definite Group of Five program to watch closely this fall, as FootballScoop discusses in-depth here in its latest podcast.

Opening with the American Conference, transitioning to the SunBelt and then closing with the Mountain West, MAC and Conference-USA, there are no shortage of storylines.

In fact, these "mid-major" programs still figure to feature prominently in the major college football landscape.

Someone's going to get the first-ever Group of Five College Football Playoff bid.

But there's a total of 13 new head coaches just between the SunBelt and Mountain West conferences.

There's several more coaches who need decisive years forward to avoid being a statistic -- coaching carousel victim -- by year's end.

Clay Helton at Georgia Southern enter a key Year 3 after back-to-back 6-7 seasons while Will Hall (Southern Miss) enters Year 4 with just one winning season and two 3-9 campaigns.

Hall has brought in well-regarded offensive coordinator Chip Long to run the offense, and Long's bonafides include helping Notre Dame to an unbeaten 2018 regular season and CFP berth, among others.

Butch Jones needs more wins at Arkansas State. He's coming off a solid bounceback-season in which the Red Wolves advanced to a bowl game, but even after doubling his win total from the year before, Jones is just 11-26 since he departed his role on Nick Saban's Alabama staff to become a head coach at a fourth different FBS program.

Lots of coaches in the MAC need big seasons.

My brain still hasn't adjusted to what a good season might look like in the BIG and SEC now.  Look at the number of BIG coaches mentioned in that article.  Conference realignment has led to a consolidation of not just money but also player and coaching talent.  In the BIG tOSU and Oregon are elite.  PSU and Iowa have been good recently and hired new OCs to try and make that next jump.  NU, Wisconsin, Washington, MSU, USC all hired coaches with proven winning backgrounds.  Indiana, Rutgers, and Minnesota have reasons for optimism with their coaches.  I think 13-14 teams in the conference all believe they could be winning 8 games a year within a couple of seasons, and they aren't completely crazy for thinking that.

I use the BIG in the above example only because I'm more familiar with it.  My assumption is the same could be said for the SEC.  7-5 and 8-4 might be pretty solid seasons for the next decade unless you are one of the top 2-3 elite teams in either conference.  All obvious thoughts, but I still need to remind myself to adjust expectations for the upcoming season.

WTF. Is this dude actually eligible to play this year for Louisville?

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/41018554/ahmari-huggins-bruce-rejoins-louisville-south-carolina

Quote

Ahmari Huggins-Bruce is back on Louisville's roster, months after the 1,000-yard wide receiver transferred to South Carolina and participated in spring and fall practice with the Gamecocks.

A news release from Louisville said Huggins-Bruce was expected to join the team for practice Tuesday but did not elaborate. South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said last week that Huggins-Bruce was no longer with his program but he did not know where he was going. Asked Monday whether Huggins-Bruce had reenrolled at Louisville, Cardinals coach Jeff Brohm instead focused on his current roster -- but now he has a key offensive contributor back on board.

Huggins-Bruce was second on the team with four touchdown catches and fourth with 312 yards on 20 receptions in nine games last season as Louisville reached its first Atlantic Coast Conference championship. He has 1,121 yards and 10 TDs on 80 catches in three seasons at the school.

This transfer shit is out of control. I'm waiting for the first guy that plays for both a MAC team and a Power conference team simultaneously to double up on NIL.

Rules committee is apparently exploring adding in a 2 min warning.  TV would have to reserve their final scheduled commercial break of the 2nd half for the 2 minute warning.

Yeah this two minute warning bullshit is bullshit.

I have no doubt this was forced on the league by ESPN so they can replay the same goddamn insurance commercials one more time per half.
