2024 Golf: Not even God can hit a 1-iron

Great recommendation, along with the stretching suggestion. I noticed last night that I was extremely dehydrated yesterday, hungry, and my shoulder/back was bothering me.  I think at the turn, I get a few minutes relief from the heat or maybe grab a quick drink, but by 16-18 I'm thirsty, tired, hungry, and cramping up in my shoulder and back. This makes a lot of sense.  Thanks for the idea. I'll give it a shot next time out.

Hope it helps! I also have started using LMNT or Liquid IV to help with hydration, I’ll drink the night before as well if I’m walking or it’s going to be hot/humid. Def also seems to help for me.

Some PGA tour player said to take a bite of something and a swig of water before starting every hole. Most underestimate just how many calories get burned playing golf. I don't follow that everytime but I'm noticably more mentally in the game when I do.

Playing a CTGA tourney at Lions. First lifetime ace! Sadly couldn’t see it go in, was behind the raised lip of the short right bunker.

158y, 5 iron.

I hate that hole, I never judge the wind right. Honestly Lions isn't a place where I usually play good which sucks because it's not that hard of a course.

I think it's just deceptively hard for some reason. Agree it feels like it is very gettable but then at the end of the day the score isn't there. The tourney I was in was net, and I had figured I was dead, but actually was a shot out of the money shooting a net 77 (def made my quad on 18, which is absolutely an easy hole, hurt a bit more). Lots and lots of people in all the flights shooting mid-70s to low-80s net, which is worse than the other tourneys.

Ouch. If I'm your caddy you're hitting a 6 iron on 18 in that situation. Such a stupid hole I agree.

Even the par 5s out there.....they seem so easy and yet I'm always having to make a par putt. The fuck man.

haha I had no idea where I was, no live scoring or leaderboards. honestly, my driver is probably more consistent than a mid-iron for me heh, holed out 5 iron notwithstanding. I went 7-6-6-6 on the par 5s, despite actually being over the water in 2 on 12 which always felt impossible to me.

For the love of God, someone help me. I used to be an 8 handicap 14 years ago but due to a variety of surgeries and injuries it took me until the last year to be able to swing the club regularly.

I decided about six months ago to give it everything I’ve got to see if I can get back down to a sub 10 handicap. The last few months I’ve steadily improved to the point where I now have one major re-occurring problem every round.

I always start the round okay, play lights out for several holes, then completely fall apart the last few holes (8-9) before the turn, get it back together for several holes then fall apart again the last few holes (16-18). Every single round.  It’s bizarre. Any idea what’s going on? I really don’t think it’s mental. It’s almost like I lose my swing during those specific holes. Something about the rhythm of the round.

I’m going the opposite direction of other replies. Something physical isn’t showing up on holes 8-9, resolving itself holes 10-15 and resurfacing 16-18.  Especially if you aren’t doing something midround to impact decline and improvement cycle. Sounds like someone grinding to get back to where you were and pressing when the prize is within reach. That’s a good thing. You’ll get comfortable with the pressure and then overcome it. You’ll be better for having done so. When shot my best side (32)and my best round (68), I was more proud of not screwing up the last hole or 2 than what came before. But I had to shit the bed several times and learn how to handle the nerves.

Played Bluejack yesterday.  Weather was perfect.  Course was immaculate as usual.  Hit 13 of 14 fairways (not saying much since the course is so wide open) and 8 of 18 GIR.  And carded an 89.  38 putts.  38.  Some of the pin locations were ridiculous.  I had a 15' birdie putt on 9 that resulted in a triple bogey after a 5 putt.  Had a quad on the par 5 5th hole despite being pin high in two.  Chipped three times to the pin only to have the ball roll 40 yards back to me.

Love the course, love the experience, but the greens make or break the score.  And, it's like eating an A5 Wagyu ribeye.  Fantastic, but so gluttonous that you can only do it every few months, IMO.

When I encounter greens like that, except for the bet, I just take a two putt for handicap purposes.

Anyone do a thanksgiving tourney at their club? If so, what time would you expect the round needs to finish?

Four hours.  This isn’t the club championship or the club member/guest. But it depends on the club and the usual time it takes to play a round.  Some courses seem to play longer than four hours.  Or maybe the players at that club are just slower.  So my answer is that it should play like a normal round.

I went out with plenty of snacks and electrolytes. While I still limped into 8-9 and 17-18, I at least held the damage to double bogeys and bogeys, rather than 8, 9, or 10’s.

I also stretched more after 5 holes on each side. I think it did help. The rest of my round was suboptimal, but at least I didn’t have the huge blow up holes. So maybe you guys are onto something. Thanks for the advice.

79 today from the combo men’s/senior tees.  With two doubles.  But then I had a 91 on Wednesday.  Crazy game.  That’s why I’m a 9.3 index.

Awesome.  I wish my dad had picked up golf.  Wasn’t in his nature.  I’m 62 but still hit it pretty far.  Then the short game disappoints.  Again, crazy game.

CBD sublingual drops can help with focus too.  However, I once made the mistake of playing after using some I'd bought on a trip to Bandon that had THC.  By the fifth hole I had such an internal monologue going I couldn't stand over a putt without telling myself to shut up.

Omg that brings back memories.

In 1995 I was living at 3030 Austin avenue in the castle heights neighborhood of Waco. That address is significant because the Waco creek greenbelt is directly opposite the property before crossing under Austin and wrapping behind my former house, and there is a 100’x100’ vacant lot adjacent.

Most summer evenings I would get baked AF and hit buckets of golf balls with a 7 iron across the street and into the usually dry creek bed, all the while providing audible commentary on each shot a la Bill Murray.

As someone who owns an indoor golf simulator bar and restaurant in North Houston, I highly recommend keeping your swing tuned up on sims the next couple of months. It’s not real golf, but it is the closest thing to real golf indoors. Depending on which sims any places near you are rocking it’s great practice and damn fun.

I’m on a one year quest to get my handicap back below 10. Knowing that a layoff in winter will set me back months, I signed up for an indoor simulator last week in Austin. They use Trackman which is incredible.

I literally fixed a major swing flaw in 20 minutes and then went out yesterday and played one of my best rounds in 10 years, if you ignore my atrocious putting. I’m sold.

Are you mofos afraid of the 40-50 degrees? Walk, it'll do you good.

Unless I'm out of town I normally play 1 round per weekend, but usually both Saturday and Sunday, and usually 1 or 2 rounds during the week. I easily get over 150 rounds a year, all walking. It's seldom ever too cold for golf in Austin.

This.  Unless it’s really cold and windy, this is the best time of the year for golf.  I love to walk.

As someone who owns an indoor golf simulator bar and restaurant in North Houston, I highly recommend keeping your swing tuned up on sims the next couple of months. It’s not real golf, but it is the closest thing to real golf indoors. Depending on which sims any places near you are rocking it’s great practice and damn fun.

nice, hope business is good

Business is good, very good. And while I agree personally that this is the best time of year to play golf, I’m also one of the guys that heat doesn’t bother and I’ll walk in the summer in the heat and humidity. That being said, there are a lot of people that would rather play indoors than outdoors the next few months. That’s a good thing for me professionally, lol.

Tobacco Road is closed for aeration while we’re in town to play pinehurst next summer.

The plan is to play 2/3 of mid pines, pine needles, and southern pines. If you had to pick 2, which ones are you playing?

I also joined an indoor place a few months ago and it's been great. Although I have the elbow/forearm pain that seems to accompany repeated swings on indoor mats.

Real Life HCP: 18

Trackman HCP: 7.7

Trackman has a handicap system?  The algorithm would seem to be a little optimistic.

Yes, when you play a full round at a vitrual course it keeps your handicap. No putting...there are some options to choose but generally it's an auto 1-putt from 10ft, 2 putts from 10-65 feet, and 3 putts from 65+

Also no bad lies or rough obviously

We have the Golfzon sims at my place. Company out of South Korea. They really are the best sims on the market. They have separate mats that simulate fairway, rough, fairway bunker and greenside bunker shots. As I mentioned, it’s not real golf, but it is the closest thing to real golf indoors. It also has putting. The putting takes some time to get used to but once you do it’s fairly realistic. They’re also the only sim on the market that has the area you stand on powered by hydraulics that mimics your lie on the course, uphill, downhill, side hill, etc. The accuracy on the Golfzon sims rivals Trackman. And it has an autotee function so you never have to tee your ball up. I have some videos playing holes from around the world on our facebook page. Search for swingzonegolf on FB if you care to see those sims in action.
