I realize we’ve discussed it plenty on here, but I’m not sure Venables decision to go with Jackson Arnold over Gabriel gets enough attention. That may be one of the worst personnel blunders of all time. He watched both those guys practice for a year and decided to push Gabriel out. Absolutely wild.

Every time this comes up, my brain still can't believe it actually happened. It took watching him play about one and a half quarters of college football for me to be absolutely 100% convinced that Arnold was incapable of ever being a serviceable QB.  Gabriel already being a proven and reliable, occasionally dynamic QB pushes the story into the realm of absurdist fan-fictional parody fever dream territory.

During the offseason I called him their Garret Gilbert, Imagine if Colt had an extra year and Mack had decided to let him go lol.

Where did you see that he pushed him out? I think it just as easily could’ve been him wanting to play for a contender

The OU spin was that they had to give Arnold a chance because he’s a 5 star from the Metroplex and they didn’t want to burn bridges. The reality is they couldn’t afford Gabriel.

This was basically the story floated to me by some of the small fish donors I know. Basically, Lebby leaving for Mississippi State soured Gabriel on staying in Norman. Oregon made an offer and OU couldn't compete so Gabriel said adios mofos. I assumed the opportunity to play for a legit title contender didn't hurt either.

How much truth there is to it, I can't say it, other than they believed it without question. It does seem to drip with copium.

Arnold held them by the balls and said either I start in 2024 or I transfer. They choose poorly

And then followed that up this class by torching their bridges at Mater Dei. Very coherent.

No, I don’t. But, it’s Louisiana. I have no reason to doubt that they would redirect mid eight figures from legit academic needs, towards football, if that was the only way to compete.

Louisiana would burn every schoolbook in the state if that was the only way to compete.

The SEC went to great lengths to explain their scheduling methodology. It’s available on their website, it was displayed during the scheduling show, and was even read aloud by the broadcast team for the vision impaired.

OU fan we will gladly trade your 2012-2022 for our lost decade and a harder schedule.

Texas got good at the right time, and that sucks for our enemies, but it is what it is.

I know they talked about factoring team quality from recent history. Texas got better and OU got worse. Life gets harder when you suck; nobody knows better than UT. Best approach is to get better, and not whine.

OU seems to feel that the SEC should have given them an easier schedule, to help support the OU brand. Sorry, the SEC is not the Big XII.

There was another factor not mentioned by the SEC- UT’s rivals. The RRS is one of the great annual games, and must be played. ESPN and the college football world expect Texas to play TAMU (even if UT and TAMU can take it or leave it). Third, even though Texas is fine ignoring Arkansas, an Arkansas - Texas game is Arkansas’ greatest desire. There is 3/8 of Texas’ schedule, locked in.

I assume OU agreed in some way to the schedule. I don’t think it was voted on, but they likely signed everything with a rough draft of the scheduling methodology in hand.

I told the office Sooners it was a very tough schedule and they all scoffed at me. They were riding high after beating us and enjoying competent QB play with Gabriel. Of course they’re bitching about it now after they had a losing season and Texas is in the semifinal.

@Brothahorn what are you doing looking at 6 month old posts and liking them? 🤣

I was “when the fuck did I say that?” Oh, last summer.

Haven't been able to keep up with the crazy. So I was binging Surly.

Also CPT. For reference I didn't start watching Seinfeld until the last season.

Besides, a good post is a good post, no matter the time.

Agree but.. let's not forget someone chose Chance Mock as a starter over QB with the intials VY.
