Sports Illustrated, once thought to be the standard of sports journalism through its writing and photography, is laying off most of its staff and "possibly all," the magazine's owner said on Friday, putting its future in jeopardy.

“… We were notified by Authentic Brands Group (ABG) that the license under which the Arena Group operates the Sports Illustrated (SI) brand and SI related properties has been officially revoked by ABG. As a result of this license revocation, we will be laying off staff that work on the SI brand," an email sent to staff said.

SI was the go-to in the 80's, and not just for the Swimsuit Issue.

Yeah I thought SI had been dead for awhile.

I had a subscription that I bought using expiring American Airlines miles just a couple of years ago.  It was terrible.  Then it quit coming, without any notice that my subscription was expiring or anything.

My childhood bedroom walls were basically wall-papered with SI covers so mark me down as sad...

It was fantastic in the 1980’s and early 90’s. And Peter King’s Monday Morning Quarterback on SI.com was enjoyable, and during the last several years the only reason why I ever checked out SI. Once he left I was done.

Sports Illustrated Thrown Into Chaos With Mass Layoffs

The announcement on Friday left in doubt what lies ahead for the venerable publication, with some staff members dismissed immediately and others told they would keep their jobs for at least 90 days.

Growing up, I'd wait patiently for my dad's SI subscription to arrive in the mailbox, especially during football season, and read that thing cover to cover.  After a big Texas victory, I'd calculate odds of Texas getting on the cover, because that shit mattered to me back then.

I still remember when I was 11 or so, I asked my dad for the location of a weeks old February edition, because it had a a neat little article on skiing I wanted to read. I remember him smirking and saying "skiing, huh?".  I was convinced at the time that he had no idea I really wanted to look at the swimsuit models.  Kids are dumb, especially ones desperate for spank material.

This is the pic that had notakitten shamelessly lying to his father.  It's like the clouds parted and I understood the meaning of life when I saw it.

Damn I miss the glory days. Growing up overseas I would get it a few weeks after they came out. For a lot of the 1980's that and a few day old Miami Heralds were the only way I could keep up with anything about US Sports.

My brother while in college would send me his. Except for the swimsuit ones. Then one day he did. A few years worth. At the time he was a good big brother!

Wife permitting, I’ve moved boxes of SI issues with Cowboys, Longhorns, Jordan, Tiger, and NC and SB covers over the decades, going back to about 2008-2010. I even have some from Spieth’s first couple of majors.

I’ve dropped my subscription over at least 10-15 years, but would by a magazine at BnN prior to the college/NFL season.

I’ve got the issue/cover framed when Texas beat Namath and Bama in the Orange Bowl.

Started my sub while in the Army (late 80s), so it’s kind of cool to see the mailing label from West Germany, S Korea, and multiple US residences over the years.

Sad to see them go. One of the few pubs that I would read cover to cover!

In the mid to late 70s, I read it cover to cover weekly. In addition to the swimsuit issue, I picked up a lot of vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure that I used in later writing. It really made a positive influence on me from a writing standpoint. Plus, Kathy Ireland absolutely made me melt.

There was an era were I think dad was low key giving me bate material. I wound up with an issue of SI from the grocery store.

It had this whole shoot in it
