2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.

Rearranging the Deck Chairs

One week after his catastrophic debate against Donald Trump, President Joe Biden thinks an interview he is giving to George Stephanopoulos, airing tonight on ABC News, will save his nomination.
Nope.
Biden may appear “with it” in his teleprompter-free exchange, and even answer tough questions crisply with energy and detail. But for all the hype this interview is getting, on the big matter it will be largely immaterial. The Biden reelection effort is over.
The Democratic party won’t nominate Biden after what they saw on June 27, but more importantly what they have learned since. The president and his family were given several days’ grace after he humiliated himself—time they used to gaslight voters and donors while Biden read written remarks instead of actually demonstrating he has the mental and physical capacity to serve four and a half more years. It was insulting. And the response to it was, effectively, a jail break. Devastating leaks about Biden’s condition were first published Tuesday, and continued throughout the week.

The New York Times: “several current and former officials and others who encountered him behind closed doors noticed that he increasingly appeared confused or listless, or would lose the thread of conversations . . . the lapses seemed to be growing more frequent, more pronounced and more worrisome.”
A report from NBC quoted an unnamed senator: “The country saw [at the debate] what those of us who have had personal interactions with him have all known for the last two and a half years.”

New York magazine reported yesterday that disturbed “Democratic officials, activists and donors” have been questioning since January whether Biden could serve another term, or even serve until Election Day: “Longtime friends of the Biden family, who spoke to me on the condition of anonymity, were shocked to find that the president did not remember their names. At a White House event last year, a guest recalled, with horror, realizing that the president would not be able to stay for the reception because, it was clear, he would not be able to make it through the reception.”
Biden, urged on by his wife and son, remains stubbornly in the race. His campaign is planning more travel and big spending. But that money is now being devoted, in part, to damage control, not going after Trump.

On Wednesday, meeting with Democratic governors, Biden declared: “No one’s pushing me out. I’m not leaving. I’m in this race to the end and we’re going to win.” Last night he insisted he’s “going nowhere.”
Yet he conceded in that same meeting that he isn’t up to the grueling 24-hour-a-day job, telling the governors he needs more sleep and can no longer do evening events.

The American people have seen a tired face, the old-man stare, and we could hear the quieter, slower speech. But we have now learned the truth—that he cannot lead us. Donors are  abandoning him and creating a new PAC for a future candidate because no more money should be spent on Biden’s denial.
Republicans are asking, Just who has been presidenting?
The voters will too. And they will feel lied to. They have been.

I certainly understand the pessimism but the energy has massively shifted around Joe. The BMD are now saying no more candy until you behave. The Biden camp needs to do this with grace and not cost us votes or burn up valuable time, there is nothing for them to prove, the way is lost.

Oh you like chaos? Because we're the Democrats and we'll add more chaos to your chaos.

If this is the new narrative then it's over. If you want to tag Kamala as being complicit in the deception then that also means the Democratic Party went along with it so they are also complicit. So then really no one is clean in this so how can any voters trust the entire party?

I expect Biden to come out apologizing for his poor debate performance. Probably will claim he screwed it up and made some mistakes. The problem is that he didn't really make mistakes at the debate. He didn't come across as poorly prepared to me. He came across as forgetting what the point he had started to make 2 seconds ago was and being unable to finish his sentences or use his time. He can't fix that and get better. And even if he could, it wouldn't matter because there is no way Trump will debate him again and even give him the chance to look better.

I love the idea that not only must Democrats move on from Biden, they must also move on from Harris. The end result of this infighting is going to be not having a nominee at all or having multiple. People are stupid, panicky beings.

And the media will run with this new narrative if Kamala is the candidate because Democrats must be perfect and Republicans can be massive pieces of shit. As much as the right loves to complain about media bias, it sure as shit seems like Biden's age is a much greater threat to America than Project 2025 and Trump laying out in great detail what he plans to allow to happen in his next term.

The media has spent years telling us they are not tipping the scales towards the Democratic Party while dropping rocks onto the scale to give the GOP favorable coverage, ignore their policy positions and statements and refuse to fact check/push back in live interviews

If Trump came out on live TV and said he will immediately jail every reporter and personality from CNN, MSNBC, NYT, WAPO, I bet they wouldn’t cover it. NYT would have an op-ed from Murdoch about how Trump’s stance against left-wing media is the most presidential thing he’s ever said

We're all on the same page here---Biden, Harris, or Dennis Castro...anything to keep Trump outta the White House.

But have a modicum of self-reflection.  2015, many of you said, "Trump is running on a platform to exploit that much of America hated the notion we had a 2-term black President and drives out new voters.  2016, many of you said, "Trump is running on a platform that much of America hated the notion that a woman might very well be the next President to drive out new voters for himself."  Many of you said something to that effect.

No matter who you run, you're not bringing out any new voters of significant import.  All you can is keep them from coming out in even greater numbers.  They, and you, claim to turn out more numbers out of disdain for a person of color and/or a female.  Registration to vote in most swing states is over in 90 days.  For the most pivotal election in U.S. history since the Civil War.  Yeah, this is time to make cool t-shirts.

Especially when the most prominent replacement is VP and will take over anyway if the old man kicks the bucket during his second term. This whole discussion is insane.

This. So they’re okay with her being #2 and taking over if Biden dies, but if he bows out of the race, it must be someone else besides her.

If Biden wins and dies and resigns next year, they’ll be calling for their preferred candidate to be named VP so that Harris has to resign as POTUS

They are telling you they are, in fact, not okay with her taking over if Biden dies.

your VP nom is usually just to shore up voters where the President is weakest or in most need and to compliment so as to de-risk as much as possible, instead of picking someone who would actually be the 2nd best President (or even a good President, potentially).

This is a black swan type event where we actually needed both, but you still run with Kamala 10/10 times in 2020. Everyone can say they saw this coming with the age, but I think few truly felt it would come home to roost like it did on Thursday of the debate. We are still in somewhat of a shock to what we saw 8 days ago.

Biden has had horrible polling related to his age and competence the last 2 years. And then 8 days ago he came on stage and confirmed he was too old and incompetent. We can yell into the void or else run a candidate that can make a coherent point about what a piece of shit Trump is.

Very disappointing that Biden publicly acknowledged his lack of energy and needs to sleep more. I don’t think we need a president staying until midnight every night but why would he play into the fears that he can’t handle the job or candidacy. If you need more sleep, then just get more sleep and stop the late evening campaign events.

IF he steps down from the race and Harris is the candidate, he also needs to resign. Let her take the reins and run her campaign as the current president.

What’s the relative cost of a few big firecrackers when you have a 2024 Chevy duramax and ski boat parked in the driveway. Only 80+ payments left on both.

I think we've been hearing about how old and imcompetent he was the last two years, but it was by trolls, irreputable media sources, obvious antagonizers, and unserious people, so we just dismissed it as evidence 9,999,999 of disingenous political fodder from the far right.

Seeing it actually happen on TV, in a slow car wreck sort of way, really shooketh a lot of folks. I think the shock has worn off but the stink from it still lingers. I thought it would be gone by now in this 24/7 media hype circus cycle we live in.

In a way, the stupid disingenous media running the "Biden is senile" narrative worked against us because we weren't prepared for him to look and sound how very old men look and sound.

Oh that's West Selma, where I used to live. My town now, they're using their energy to rebuild their houses to take up every square inch of the lot, and they use one of two designs: either recreating The Prancing Pony inn in Bree, or else building a warehouse designed to look like a small cottage with double human proportions. I'm talking an HO scale house sitting on an N scale layout. No boats, hardly any trucks. We do have tiny angry women in Range Rovers who tailgate.

The state of the union was a banger. The Biden camp is the one that pushed for the debate. This was the biggest political miscalculation since Sarah Palin.

That was my thought initially, but info is coming out saying Team Biden noticed him going downhill, so perhaps they did it on purpose, so they'd have enough time to pivot if needed.

I'd like to think they are playing chess, but perhaps I'm giving them too much credit.

I mean, the only swing state governors I’d choose are Whitmer or Shapiro. Evers is too old and so is Roy Cooper.  Cooper or Shapiro would be excellent VP choices for Harris, along with, as mentioned, Mark Kelly

I think too much credit, they really prepared him trying to make it work.

The debate was not a disaster in effect, the debate may be what saves the nation.  The democratic campaign was under water and sometimes to fix something, first you need to destroy it.

We were (are?) running grandpa against satan. We need a vigorous, aggressive champion (ex- prosecutor? ) to go at Trump with both barrels. We need a wildly contrasting articulate truth warrior

to make that bleach drinking antichrist evident for the narcissistic moronic jackass that he is.

Find our defender of democracy and let's ride.

According to many pundits and most of this forum, Trump turned out 10mm new voters because of a Black President.  And turned out another 10mm new voters because of the possibility of a female President.  There are receipts.  Do you all not remember the last 9 years of lectures?
