2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.

Can we talk about the political implications of this yet? He's going to get a 5 point bump in the polls plus the convention and VP-tick magnifying it. On the heals of broad recognition that Biden is likely to old to effectively run, probably serve, absent Biden dropping out and an inside straight from the democratic party, we should get ready for Dear Leader Dotard, no? For the record, my heart goes out to the family of the victim in PA and those injured, and reject political violence.

I remember posting a valid propublica article on this website and got negged and reprimanded by @markstanco and he hasn’t negged anyone else posting a pro publica article since.

Fun times.

There will be zero implications.  Three weeks from now, it’ll be like it never happened.

That’s where I’m at.  I just can’t imagine there’s a large population of former Trump voters whose affection is re-ignited because of the attack.

Just to make sure I'm summarizing things correctly over the past couple of weeks: nothing Biden can do can hurt his chances, and nothing that happens to Trump can help his chances. Got it.

You know Trump's rhetoric and policies really make we worry about the next 4 years but then again Biden is old and Trump got shot at. I'll vote Trump!

If you were swayed by Trump almost dying to vote for him then you were always going to vote for him.

That said, it's a long time until November. Say you're an independent who is leaning Trump after yesterday and you tune in to the Republican Convention, do you really think you're going to hear policy discussion and speeches that are going to validate your decision to go to Trump? If so, you were always going to vote for him.

And if you're someone who wasn't going to vote because you have zero faith in Biden but Trump and the right is just too radical? Now, "the left" is just as bad, just as violent, if not more so. The both sides heroes are going to milk the shit out of this.

I get it. It shouldn't matter. But imagine a world where Trump had all of his (limited) mental faculties fail him in a debate, and Biden defiantly survived an assassination attempt a week later against the contrast of his "too old, too weak" opponent.

We'd all be dancing in the street about an election that's effectively over.

And that would have been a mistake.

Reagan was the active President when he was shot. If Biden was the one it was attempted on that would be a much better example. And if it was a guy who had Republican leanings that tried to kill him, I think that speaks a lot larger volumes for how fucked up that side is. How does a kid on that side get radicalized to want to kill the leader of his party?

I'm sure we'll learn more in the next few weeks, but my guess is that he didn't particularly care about the politics and was more in it for fame like a lot of these lunatics.

They may have stayed home.

The apathetic probable Biden voter has absolutely nothing to motivate them at this point.

The apathetic Trump voter just a major shot in the arm.

I acknowledge that we all know shit about fuck, but this can't all be just one big nothing.

i mean we don't know much but what we do know...he was a registered republican and a gun guy. not exactly a textbook from 'the left'.

One of the common guesses is he’s a true Q believer and the Epstein files might have pushed him over the edge

I 100% think that this will be the case. Just a nutjob looking to be famous in death, not a political revolutionary. Hopefully the facts of the case don't give a ton of room for alternative interpretation.

Yep, there was a concerted (and wise) effort by the Biden campaign and DNC to drill down on some milquetoast Trump voters in certain states so they'd just sit it out.  You're gonna get your straight ticket voters who'll pull from anybody from Trump to Tito Puente.  You're gonna get the ultra-luny MAGA base. The idea was to keep a few million in the middle of that bloc to stay home outta shame and frustration with Trump.  This just convinced a few million of 'em to get back into the fray after all.  As if Biden didn't have enough of balancing act, now he has to try to heal all sides while still seeming above the fray of insulting Trump's obvious flaws.

There's a job for a surgeon of a surrogate in here somewhere who can still hammer home all the shit wrong with Trump, but without seeming too insensitive nor too close to Joe.  And that person will have to get comfortable looking over their shoulder for the next decade.  I don't envy them, but somebody's gotta step up.

Well written speech from Biden in Oval Office. Reframed as each side has different visions for America. Resolve our differences with the ballot box not with bullets. Reframed as he has a different vision for American than the other side. No longer saying existential crisis or Trump great threat, just that the other side has an agenda and vision that will impact America for years to come. It’s the importance of democracy in his vision not any longer that Trump is the threat to it. Just that Trump has a different vision, well written.

Yeah. Classmates are saying the kid was relentlessly bullied. Doesn't appear to have any solid life prospects. Makes more sense that he wanted to go down in a mass shooting event than it does that he was radicalized against the party he registered for so much that he decided to kill their candidate ahead of the first election he was even old enough to vote in.

I actually think this is by and large true.  The outcome will be determined by the Democratic GOTV operation, driven by Project 2025 and womens rights, and how effective it is in the swing states.

I don't think anything either Biden or Trump do, besides dying, is material to the outcome of the election.

Maybe.  There are apathetic republicans, but Trump made them apathetic. What is an apathetic Trump voter?

This kid wasn’t a nutjob… he knew exactly what he was doing and why he was doing it.  I think it’s flippant to refer to him a just another crazy.  Something was wrong with him for sure, but insanity wasn’t it. The Trump movement is defined by its cruelty and intolerance. Something like this happening is not surprising given the environment this kid was probably immersed in over the past several years. It’s a sick world and that doesn’t excuse this guys bad behavior but he wasn’t crazy. JMO

I know many of you are surrounded by Republican family members and friends, but I’ve been surprised by how many in my circle I’ve communicated with in the last day have said to me something to the effect “we were only inches from Haley or DeSantis”.

These people have no personal affection for Trump.  But my circle is more the rich, low taxes type than MAGA.

I don't know how I hadn't heard this before, but I just learned that WI is an open carry state.  They won't be able to bring their guns into the RNC venue in Milwaukee, but they'll be all around it.

That's gonna be one seriously dangerous atmosphere for a few nights.

I don't think it will be any more dangerous than any high school in America during the school day.

I’m not sure, barring Trump coming out with some sort of Kum-ba-ya Reaganesque “we all need to come together to save America and I’m the first to moderate ” moment, this changed things all that much, other than making him look much more physically robust than Biden.

What reliable likely voters  are most likely to change their vote based on Saturday: older white men who consider themselves Reagan Republicans who are likely to rally back to the GOP flag. The question is whether they stay there when the crazy starts to creep back in.

By Wednesday we are going to be shoulder deep in GQP conspiracy and angry talk. Maybe, Trump’s folks will tone the convention down, but what in recent memory has shown any indication they ever take their foot off the gas?

Maybe the entire country will Rally to Trump like Johnson in 64, but that seems….unlikely given how deep our political divisions are.

I knew the Democratic Party was weak but holy shit this is like political malfeasance on so many levels.  Who is running Joe Biden’s campaign? Is it Dick Morris or some other washed up out of touch boomer?  Kitchen table issues and healthcare aren’t even in the conversation and the only articulated agenda Biden has for a second term is somehow doing all the shit he failed to even fight for in his first term.  People are not buying what he’s selling.  Divine intervention is pretty much our only hope and that’s the saddest part because the other side is a bunch of unpopular weirdos with horrible ideas no one likes.

They should all be forced to read Caro's biography of LBJ.

Do you think Biden would have survived that SS tackle or are you chortling at how feeble he is?

Of course he would have. He's in better shape than Donald Trump.

Sure, buddy. Also, Robert Caro spends an awful lot of time hating on a man who did this:
