Nightly walk update — some new Harris/Walz signs up in neighborhood. Harris households now outnumber the orange shitstain on our two mile route, 12-5. (I am under no illusion that we are flipping Texas.)

So in my neighborhood, which is pretty consistently 2/3rds Democratic, I've seen two Trump signs.  One is a handwritten sign of crazy.  The other is a campaign sign just next to the old beater pick-up truck in the driveway that is really very incongruous with the neighborhood.

A quick thought on that Trump sign, if you haven't seen those campaign signs.  It's blue, for one.  And that strikes me as odd in a world in which red has become the universally understood color of the GQP.  But for another, the font size is very small.  Shockingly small for something that says "TRUMP" on it.  It almost implies a certain shame--"I'm putting out this yard sign, but I don't actually want to advertise that I'm voting for that guy."

There are houses in the neighborhood that always have their GQP campaign signs out, no matter whether the candidate at the top of the ticket is Trump or Cruz or Abbott, but which don't have anything right now.  Maybe it's just too early.  I don't know.

And I think all this is meaningless.  But it's interesting to observe on an otherwise-slow Wednesday.

Trump said today that Ukraine is completely destroyed, and that it will take centuries to rebuild it. Also, every nation on Earth could pool their money together, and it wouldn't be enough to rebuild Ukraine.

Of course.
Except it’s not, not even close. Most cities are just fine. Some damage, but fine. Kyiv still stands, e.g.
And gee…have we ever seen a European country that took even more damage than Ukraine? I guess the answer is “no,” if you don’t consider England, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Russia, and several others after WWII. Seems to me they were all rebuilt in a few decades, without bankrupting earth.
There’s nothing he says that’s not wildly false or wrong. Not a single thing.

Subtext being, obviously, "Well it's destroyed, so might as well just give it all to Russia now!".

My neighbor on one side has like 50 pieces of his nazi flare all over his front yard and the neighbor on the other side is some sort of Travis County Democratic party admin and has his single Harris sign. I hate them both and just have my Astros flag flying. If the bullets start flying I am going to make for damn sure they know this yard is a DMZ. Pretty sure they both know I am crazier than a shithouse rat.

I grew up in OK, so I probably had that moment a few years before you had.  I remember sitting there thinking, why should I respect adults, when so many of them are fucking stupid...

Sitting in OK right now.  Was shocked to see that OK was one of two states where every single county went to Trump.  Even majority Native American counties.  WTF.

Okie City and Tulsa are purplish.  The rest of the state is MAGAstan.

As of today 6 Harris signs on my street and none for Trump. There was a Trump flag about a half mile south but I think it’s gone now. Next closest was about 3 miles south. He’ll still win the county but it’ll be mostly straight party line voters.

Also a gay porn dude who Greg Abbott is very fond of was outed yesterday. His job was to promote using public funds to pay for private schools.

I saw a blue dotard sign that looked like it was half the size of a normal sign.

You mean like folded in half along the horizontal bias to hide the Pence?

I saw a nice big sign on fence posts a couple of weeks ago driving in Republic, WA and they had carefully painted blue over the Pence lettering so it was Trump on top and a ton of empty blue space below.

A neighbor had a Trump/Pence sign that they had covered up the Pence.

They were out in their yard the other day while I was walking the dogs and asked "Wait, Pence isn't running with Trump against Biden?   How come?"

I got a nasty look and kind of a snide "Are you serious?"

I replied with "Yeah, I don't pay attention to politics at all."

The retort was "Trump isn't even running against Biden.  You didn't know that?"

Me... "Nope, like I said, I just don't pay attention" and proceeded on my way.

I'm pretty sure my neighbor was incredibly pissed off.

Does Trump know 82 words?

Almost certainly. If Trump is 1/2 as smart as a dog, or a baby, that still gets him up above 80:

(BBCMaestro)"In his seminal 1994 work, The Intelligence of Dogs, he writes that a typical dog can learn around 165 words, and some super-bright sparks can pick up closer to 250 human terms. As an interesting comparison, a typical two-year-old (human) child knows about 200 words. Like a human baby, your dog learns by association."

Also, though his speech is garbled, it is generally recognizable as English. Long ago a polyglot told me that you could "speak" a language by learning only 80 words, so long as they were the right 80 words. The fact that Trump can manage a 3rd grade level of English makes me think he's got more than 82.

(teachsafeschools.org) "But by this point, they are 3000 to 4000 words behind more advantaged children. Children in third grade at the lowest 25% have an average of 2500 root words, while those in the highest 25% have an average of 6000 to 8000 words."

I have a hard time believing Trump could actively use thousands of words. I think it likely that he has a solid 100 that he pulls up and uses constantly, bigly, and then a vast stew of semi-familiar words he would never be able to use properly himself. We haven't touched on this, but I bet Trump, like any other mammal, draws in lots of information from the tone of voice he is addressed in, or from familiar gestures that evoke comforting memories. Perhaps, like an ant, he gets many of his social cues from following scent trails.
