What’s the deal with the mountain lion ballot measure?  Some interesting competing ads on the tv this morning.

Aldrin for Trump, unsurprisingly.

Thanks to xitter formatting it looks like he's endorsing putting the orange dotard on the moon. I usually get annoyed when people who paste from xitter don't post the full text but in this case I'm grateful you spared us, however inadvertent it may have been.

Mountain lion hunting is about to be banned and the out of state hunters who come here to shoot them are big mad about it.

They use dogs to tree the lions and then shoot them out of the tree.  It's not hunting.

The ads against it are entertaining, though.  They would make you think mountain lion attacks on people are a regular occurrence.  There have been 25 of them since 1990 in the entire state.

Another csb , Just got a reply from the GoP precinct chair who texted me earlier this week propagating election integrity lies.  I had replied to him that baselessly undermining people’s faith in elections is traitorous and told him to fuck off.

His reply: “Thank you for your reply.
I just got off the phone with a lady who voted at Riverbend on 360 last Saturday. Her choices continually flipped to another candidate as she was voting. She reported to the clerk that she was having issues with Machine #4 - the clerk told her that Machine #3 was doing the same thing. In my humble opinion, ANY mechanical device can have a glitch. It is only fair to the voter that they check their summary to be certain that their choices are voted. I hope you have a wonderful day.”

I know this story is bullshit.  Clerks are required by law to immediately stop the use of any machine suspected of malfunctioning.  No clerk would openly talk about a machine malfunctioning, especially to a voter while helping them vote on another machine suspected of malfunctioning.  I replied to him with that and told him to fuck off again.

I think you should call KVUE or one of the local TV stations put his ass on the news.

That one was fucking hilarious.  If you live in the mountains and want to keep your pets alive, you keep them inside.  There's a lot more than just mountain lions that want to snack on kitty.

Just had a conversation with someone at work about how tariffs work. I said if it's a blanket tariff on all imports of 20%, as has been proposed by Trump, then it's going to make a whole hell of a lot of goods go up in price by 20%. He said that's not how it will work, since prices elsewhere will remain lower and force the foreign producers/sellers to keep their prices lower to remain competitive with American made goods. I said Ok, but we don't make everything here, so many many things will still go up in price as taxes and fees always get passed on to consumers. He agreed it might go up some, but it's no big deal. American companies will see the opportunity in the markets and eventually "fill in the gaps." (Internally thinking WTF dude...)

That's when I realized Trump is a god damn magician, he's finally gotten Republicans on board with significant tax increases.

Nah.  The passwords that were leaked only work if you're physically standing in front of the machines (since they are air gapped) and they are locked in secure storage.  They will all need to have their passwords changed, obviously, but that's as far as this goes.

And there will be an audit trail to prove no changes before the pw change.

They think since they're getting a tax cut, it'll all work out.  Never mind most of them don't pay any taxes or very little.

You don't even have to be in the mountains.  Everything loves to eat dogs and cats.  Coyotes, foxes, raccoons, owls, hawks, eagles, etc.

Uh, I was also under the impression that assuming you could isolate a domestic product from an increase in prices due to foriegn inputs (which is virtually impossible in our modern global trade based world)...classic economics (as well as real world examples) suggest that domestic producers will not forgo the ability to generate extra profits by also raising prices to tariff inflated prices (or just below).  Why would I sell you a MADE IN THE USA widget at a 20% discount from my foriegn made competitor when there is a guaranteed government profit cushion?

True, you just get more of all that in the mountains vs the suburbs.  And you get mountain lions, too.

Voted against that one, personally.  The biologists tracking wildlife populations at Colorado Parks & Wildlife are best equipped to decide if and how many mountain lions are bagged every year (imo).

It's honestly amazing that more of the racist shit from that rally isn't getting more buzz. Well, it should be anyway. Calling Kamala Samoan-Malaysian, like every brown person is the same and lesser? Tucker Carlson being in any way attached to a campaign should be a disqualifier in and of itself.

Yep. Hinchcliffe's stupid jokes were a good thing in that they raised awareness of the attitudes these people have about minorities, but the way so many are focusing on only his comments is taking eyes away from the hateful, racist  tone of the entire night and indeed the entire campaign.

Its not this simple on either side of the argument and you are likely both wrong.

There will be retaliation on tarriffs that you didn't talk about from these countries that are will impose tarriffs on and there's not a lot of either finished goods or raw goods that are completely vertical supply chain wise here or there.

Tarriffs aren't a universal lever you pull because that's stupid and not how economies work. The cost of everyone's goods would rise, but it would be coupled with more government revenue to subsidize the cost of some goods or for some vendors. What actually happens in this scenario is buddies get cut in on dirty deals and get favorable pricing/subsidy/immunity from tarrif and everyone else gets fucked while the majority of people (not just Americans) get left holding the bag.

Its a really good way to change absolutely nothing and fuck over the people who need the biggest breaks. Its also heavily unbalanced and penalizes the high consumption companies more than low consumption ones.

Overall the 20% tarriff as a policy is bad because it's oversimplified and quite simply put, stupid. So yeah if you want stupid policy that's it.

I voted for it.  It's not hunting and humans don't need to manage the populations through hunting - the lions manage their own population and will not reproduce if there isn't enough food.  California has banned hunting since 1990.  They have a similar density of lions to other western states and they have had roughly the same number of attacks as CO has over the past ~35 years.  Hunting mountain lions is completely unnecessary.

And on a personal note, I think there is something wrong with people who want to kill a mountain lion just to kill it.

In general, I have a long standing position that except in cases where biologist led population control is necessary, I don't think you should be allowed to use weapons to kill predators above you on the food chain. It's messing with god's law.

I was just told on another board that "The Puertoricans changing their vote last minute (there is 450K of them in Pennsylvania) will be offset by the Amish community there who all decided to vote this time for Trump".

Hmm. LOL. There are 93K Amish folks in PA. Including those who aren't old enough to vote. And the Amish rarely vote.

Granted this is Trump we are talking about, so who knows what the hell he would actually do, but this is from a few weeks ago:

As president, Trump imposed tariffs with a flourish — targeting imported solar panels, steel, aluminum and pretty much everything from China.

“Tariff Man,” he called himself.

This time, he’s gone much further: He has proposed a 60% tariff on goods from China — and a tariff of up to 20% on everything else the United States imports.

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/trump-favors-huge-new-tariffs-how-do-they-work

So a 20% blanket tariff on everything is incredibly stupid and it will drive up costs of many many things is my main point. I don't even think you disagree with that part, which was the main point of my conversation with a guy who thought inflation is a problem now and we were better off 5 years ago. I'm saying it will be much worse under that policy rather than the current administration plan.

Of course you have a pony that the revenue from those tariffs will be significant. However, I don't think it will be offsetting the cost that regular people like you or I spend on those products. the money will instead be redirected into some big government coffers and used for something else that probably won't benefit us peasants.

Trump's entire campaign is trying to turn out demographics that don't vote.  But they seem to keep getting through these polling likely voter screens....

It will either be the greatest strategy or will absolutely bomb when they still don't show up.

Especially when his opponent is gobbling up college educated voters (who always vote), black women (who ALWAYS vote) and suburban women (who always vote).

This. If he pulls it off, then he'll win in a landslide, and we will have a new world order.  And we all need to be prepared for that.  That's my moment of darkness for today.

Without derailing the whole thread into a tariff discussion, tariffs are not blanket good or bad.  Judicious and appropriately targeted tariffs have their place, and can have a positive overall effect.  And, blanket, non-thoughtful application of tariffs can be economically costly and devastating.  They are a powerful medicine, to be administered deliberately and sparingly.

See, e.g., the solar panel issue.  China was vastly undercutting and dumping.  Trump imposed tariffs on them, Biden left them largely in place, and further supported the domestic solar manufacturing industry via the Inflation Reduction Act.  As a result, American manufacturing of solar panels, a good of great economic and strategic importance, has taken off and prospered.

"I'ma tariff EVERYTHING!" is stupid as shit.

I'm reminded of the lead up to the first Gulf War under HW Bush.

So many articles about how the Iraqis were battle-tested with large numbers of soldiers and armor. Their airforce numbered in the 100s of planes. It had been a while for us. The alarmism impacted me. I wasn't sure about the prospects of an easy victory.

Afterwards, we'd of course destroyed them, I remember Tom Clancy and other hawks deriding people like me who were worried at all. What, did Tom think I had my own intelligence service and crew of reporters? I had no other source of information.

Here, there is gloom projected by the main outlets again. Remember the template. Look at a poll. Check the margin of error. Announce if the results are within that margin. Then go to the panel as though that information is solid and talk about what it means. They need to analyse their premise before making the leap to opinion. They won't do that because they haven't done it before.

tariffs worked great …

before electricity / telephones / internet

before companies had factories worldwide and could shift production with a couple clicks
