Voted about 11:30 in light-blue Birmingham suburb. Clicking along efficiently, I asked the poll workers how busy it was, they showed me the numbers on the machines, about double the usual.

No drama, even though I cosplayed wearing my replica Union Army belt buckle.

Saw one woman walk out from voting with a smile like she'd sent an abusive ex to prison.

Checking Instagram later, my local artsy friends are swarming the polls, some standing in hour-long lines. Maybe all the other people in those lines are Trumpy. Maybe they aren't.

Which why so many of us are just befuddled that he not only got the nomination without any pushback but that he's considered a legitimate contender.

Yeah. I kind of got it in 2016 and 2020.

Now I just have to accept people want fascism and coup attempts.

I can think of some. LGBTQ+ stuff like allowing gay marriage and being nice to trans people.

Abandoning free trade to an extent and going back to aiding Unions...to an extent. Trying to raise the national minimum wage. Doing some things to fight climate change.

Stuff like that.

All things that I like and I support but I guess if you are a 1990s type Democrat who wants big crime bills, free trade bills, and cozying up to big business you might be annoyed.

The Democrats have actually been a bigger champion of free trade than the GOP, especially since Trump (e.g., tariffs). Aiding unions has been a core Democratic policy for a fucking hundred years, that isn't a shift to the goddamn left. Neither is raising the minimum wage a shift. The fucking minimum wage was established in fucking 1938 and hasn't kept up with inflation at all. That isn't a shift to the left. The EPA was founded in 1970, in part to fight climate change (just not specifically global warming). That isn't a shift to the left. If anything, the Democrats have been a lot more lukewarm on these traditional "left" policies over the last 20 years, so I'd call that a shift to the center.

I’m not freaking arguing Trump isn’t an extremist at all.  Just the fact that both parties have gone more away from center, that’s it.  Which with polls of democrats since Clinton have proved. The other side I don’t even need to quote articles to prove obviously. I don’t understand why wanting both parties to be more center is a bad thing. The fact you have people like @Dahobbs and @Brisketexan negging anything they don’t agree with kinda proves my point.

Everyone is on edge about false equivalencies. And it is a false equivalency that the GOP has moved as far right as the Dems have moved left. I think that's what is pissing people off with your posts.  Certainly the tangible effects of those moves have been greater on the right (Jan. 6th, Charlottesville).  And before you say "yeah, but the George Floyd/Minneapolis and Kenosha riots," those were in response to actual police brutality and murder; worthy reasons to be up in arms unlike a fake stolen election and white supremacy.

I'm honestly shocked there wasn't more of this in places like Detroit and Philly.

i've been checking philly.com periodically waiting for some shit. I think the Philly DA's repeated FAFOs may have worked.

Well you will get no argument from me. I was just saying they have shifted leftwards on those issues from where they had been.

But to the Republican media machine these are dangerous radical left policies.

What’s the point?  You aren’t going to agree with any of it.  Both have moved farther apart on almost all issues.  There’s plenty of examples out there, this isn’t news to most people.  Women’s rights and immigration fuck the Republicans for sure.  It’s the rest they keep getting farther apart on but you and plenty others don’t see it obviously.  Literally posted a poll of democrats and their stance and how it’s changed.  There is no middle anymore on anything.

Not arguing the last part at all.  But literally democrats themselves in polls say they have moved more left.  What part of that are you so angry about?  Like what’s making this visceral reaction happen?  Everything ok at home?  The fact you use fucking so many times proves you won’t listen to any logical argument of a view you don’t agree with obviously.

The reaction is visceral becuase people keep asking you to name ONE policy, and you refuse to do it (becuase you probably fucking can't) and then you whine again and again about people not reading your fucking lame ass OPINION piece article(s).

If you want to engage in good faith conversation, you should try acting in good faith. So name a democratic policy that is super far left. Was it  the Infrastructure Act? Was it the CHIPS act?

Look can you please just call it quits? its called shifting the overton window, I don't care about the meta or what democrats think. it is this level of incompetence where the overton window has shifted to deporting all undocumented workers (and legals, and citizens and Jack Smith) is part of the discourse.

Discourse about moving to the center is surrendering to fascism.

You haven't made a logical argument, you've made an emotional one. That's why you've cited to polls and opinion pieces. The Democrats are far to the right of where they were in the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s. It isn't debatable. It is cold hard fact. Every genuinely progressive policy from those times have been walked back by modern Democrats to some extent or another.  I curse because I like it and it emphasizes a point: you're being fucking dense as fucking hell.

Thread shit over.

American Democrats, in 2024, are much further right than pretty much any major liberal party in any other first world country. I'm not even sure it's debatable.

What a completely asinine attempt at a point.

So in poll with democrats since Clinton the stance of most democrats has changed drastically to further left….  But pointing this out is my bad somehow?  There’s no actual conversation coming from this obviously, it’s the same for both now.  Neither will admit anything.

I read it but the key is that I also understood it. I explained why self-descriptions of moderate, liberal, etc. are worthless using you as an example but I can't understand it for you.

And yet again, two references to policy areas where Republicans have gone hard right but zero ability to come up with areas where Democrats have gone far left. You're doing a tremendous job of proving everyone else right.

The 1980s broke the leftism of the Democratic Party. We are currently slowly walking it back to where it was in the 1970s.

But that is on economic issues. On social issues, of course they are more progressive today. And that is also where the Republicans go after them and try to stir up panic.

We’re not asking some random sampling of what policies the Democratic Party has shifted far to the left on. We are asking you. Do you have an answer that you are willing to share.

And you're 100 percent wrong. You've lost sight of what center is.

Democrats have gone more towards the center while Republicans have gone so far off the map they're approaching Mars.

Name Biden policies of the last 4 years that were far left of actual center. List them and explain why.
