Because Republicans are always viewed as better on the economy. Interest rates, inflation, cost of everything being higher all play into Trump's tiny hands. Jobs reports and Wall Street do nothing for Main Street when the former are a big issue. It's Jimmy Carter all over again.

Which is ironic because they never are.

Americans are weird.

This. Republicans always tank the economy and the Dems have to fix it.

Yes, exactly. Anyone remember what the economy looked like when Dotard left office? And, compared to now?

People use that line but the pandemic would've destroyed anyone's economy. Obama's, Clinton's, W's. But some people get all warm and fuzzy remembering the pre-2020 economy under Trump when goods and services were cheaper. Liberals have got to stop burying their heads in the sand on this economy. Data wise, it's improved but consumer wise, it hasn't. Groceries are still expensive, car loans and credit card loans are more now because of the Fed rate hikes, meals out cost more. That's all things that hit people in their pocketbooks and Biden, rightly or wrongly, takes the blame as Carter did and Bush Sr did. This administration has incredibly shitty messaging on the economy.

They remember the pre-2020 economy but also lump into that the 1.50 gasoline during the pandemic.

I am voting for a decent person I disagree with on policy over a criminal defendant without a moral compass

Too long for a bumper sticker, but this is the general idea. Hopefully in a month or so, change "criminal defendant" to "convicted felon".

Yep, as soon as he's been back in the news as the GOP nominee, people suddenly remember how much they fucking hate him.

Dems should ask how 8.4 trillion of debt Trump added affected inflation and the cost of groceries?

Spot on.  Some people are feeling pain due to inflation and/or resultant interest rate hikes, but I don't think it has anything to do with who has been in the Whitehouse.  Where I think this is different than previous fed actions that affected Carter or Bush Sr is that I think the fed held off on rate hikes much longer than they would have ordinarily because we were in the middle of a pandemic and a global response to it that was impacting the economy in unprecedented and unpredictable ways.

I'd ask him how deporting all the illegals is going to affect the cost of groceries.

Well, immigration is supposedly the top issue so I'm sure people who think we need to get rid of all migrants don't think that far ahead. We know Republicans certainly don't.

I think the Fed is going to sink or save Biden's chances. But the clock is running out on this and Powell seems to need years worth of evidence to lower rates at this point. It will probably be similar to when the recovery was starting under Bush Sr and Clinton rode the wave. Trump would do similar...until the country starts imploding under his policies.

Back to the NYT bullshit:

Of course, the New York Times is full of bullshit. #bothsides.

Has been for at least 35 years … at least since I first read the Times on a regular basis in the Perry-Casteneda Library newspaper room. (Anyone else recall that room lined with newspapers, ground floor, on the right just past the security desk.)

The Times has enabled damn near every fucking major political problem in this country with their “bothsides” editorial policy and supposedly “objective" reporting. They have enabled fascism and theocracy for certain. Yet, almost every liberal I know reads it like a sacred text.

“All the News That Fits” …. that’s what should be on the front page.

These are the only remaining people who will vote for Trump:

1. Racists

2. Sexists

3. Single issue voters who think they’ll pay less taxes under Trump (most of them are wrong, because they are not as rich as they think they are)

4. Single issue pro-life voters

5. conspiracy theorists

6. people who suck brain poison out of the boob tube (Fox News viewers)

There are ZERO rational-thinking, analytical-minded voters who look at truly meaningful things like foreign policy, economic policy, social policy, or character who will pull the lever for Trump.  And it still might be enough for that piece of shit to get to 270.

You just pointed out over half of the citizens in this country.  Let's hope they all don't vote for Trump or at least the ones in the 3 states that matter for the election.

oh wait, here it is - the REAL economy:

Stock market returns
edit
Stock market returns are also higher under Democratic presidents.[21] CNN reported in September 2020 that: “Since 1945, the S&P 500 has averaged an annual gain of 11.2% during years when Democrats controlled the White House, according to CFRA Research. That's well ahead of the 6.9% average gain under Republicans.”[3] Analysis conducted by S&P Capital IQ in 2016 found similar results since 1901.[22] Blinder and Watson estimated that the S&P 500 returned 8.4% annually on average under Democrats, versus 2.7% under Republicans, a difference of 5.7% percentage points. This computation used the average value in last year of the president's term, minus the average value in last year of previous term.[1]

The Washington Post cited a study by CFRA Research that the stock market (as measured by the S&P 500) averaged the following annual rates of return, under different control scenarios, from 1945 to September 2020:

Democratic president with split Congress: 13.6%
Democratic president with Republican Congress: 13.0%
Republican president with Republican Congress: 12.9%
Democratic president with Democratic Congress: 9.8%
Republican president with split Congress: 5.8%
Republican president with Democratic Congress: 4.9%[23]

LOL that would be something.  Trump beats a rap of falsifying business records to pay off a porn star to stay quiet, gets elected and bans porn.  Of course on this fucking timeline...probably.

fantastic talk by A Yang. TL;DR summary - rank choice voting. Something many have been saying for some time

Yes, I’ve been saying this for some time. Since the first time I learned what it was and understood the absolute logic in it. But we can’t have nice things. Because we are stupids ruled by the corrupt.

yeah the data he cites there is just staggering. +90% re-election with a 15% approval rate. So motherfucking broken.

I think here AY does a better job of simply expressing the sheer stupidity of it. that data ^ + the citation on money. I mean for fuck sake the money take is unreal. We spend billions to make lots of people angry and only change the decision of maybe a 5% if we are lucky. The inefficiency is mind bottling

I’ve never understood this.

Looking at the only Republican presidents in my lifetime Trump and GWB. Their policies didn’t benefit anyone unless they satisfied the following criteria.

1) top 10% of this country financially ( or better)

2) owned a business

3) male gender ( republicans only acknowledge the existence of 2 of these)

4) white

I’m not sure, but if every single one of these guys were registered to vote would it be 10-15 million?  Trump got how many votes last time?

The GOP does a masterful job at convincing folks to vote against their own self interests by distracting them with culture war shit like abortion or “libs will kill you if I lose” propaganda.
