My immediate thought as well. I'm not sure ol' Francisco's parents were as wholesome as he thinks. Good for them.

Basically, people that have no issue trampling someone else's liberty, but will scream bloody murder the second they are inconvenienced.

Which all goes back to the core cause of our utter brokenness: a complete lack of empathy.  We worship the "me" 100%, the "we" 0%.

So long as we get ours, we don't give a shit if the leopards eat everyone else's faces.  But even that meme is problematic.  You shouldn't be upset when the leopards get around to eating YOUR face.  Any decent human being should be disturbed and called to action when the leopards show up to eat your neighbor's face.  Someone else's face being eaten is just as bad as your own face being eaten.

But in America, 2024?  Fuck everyone but me.  If I could vote for someone who would kill the half of the country that doesn't look like me, and then give me all their stuff so I am more prosperous, I'm all for it.  Not just okay with it, but FOR IT.

We are one fucked in the head society.  Mr. Rogers would kick all our asses.

With all the talk of dumping Trumpy friends and acquaintances.  Let's talk about Twitter.. and it's continued prevalence here.

Elon Musk gave $75M to his pro-Trump super PAC

Musk launched the group over the summer.

Billionaire SpaceX CEO Elon Musk poured just shy of $75 million into his super PAC backing Donald Trump’s presidential campaign last quarter, according to a new campaign finance filing.

Musk, the richest person in the world, was the sole donor to the pro-Trump America PAC, according to the filing submitted to the Federal Election Commission late Tuesday. Musk launched the group over the summer and has funded voter contact across key presidential states and more than a dozen House races.

Lots of GOP cope - I don't think they're that confident.  The GOP statewide requests were a little less than 500k ballots and Dems were over 1 million.

They can't reverse firewall with 500k ballots that don't exist.

Remember when Al Gore made a sort of awkward but largely accurate statement about his role in the early development of the internet that got misrepresented as him claiming that he "invented" the internet and it almost ruined his political career? Yeah, I 'member.

Remember when Dan Quayle followed an incorrect flash card and told a kid in a spelling bee that he had spelled "potato" incorrectly, and it DID destroy his political career?  I remember.

Quayle misspelled potato, and it ended his career.

Trump IS a fucking potato, and he's going to be elected POTUS.  Again.

That's a terrible idea.  Vance does not get rattled like Trump does.  He'll just spew his lies ad nauseum.  Zero upside for Harris to do such a thing.

She should be mentioning his mental decline every day, though.

Yes on the second part.

Though trying to frame it as Harris v Vance isn't the *worst* idea because H2H polling, she crushes him.

Like, look - if Trump wins, Vance will be president faster than you can blink.

I think you missed the point on that one. If something crazy like that actually happened, it would be Trump throwing in the towel, and Vance ain't beating Harris.

What a fucking boatload of malarky...I don't even know where to start. A man talking about the rule of law in favor of a guy who gassed peaceful protestors for a photo-op...a man talking the rule of law for someone who has said he'll suspend the laws to be a dictator on day one. A man talking about the rule of law who sent a mob at the capital when an election didn't go his way. A man who demonstably attempted to send fake electors. A twice impeached president with audio of a phone call demanding the GA secretary of state to find him 11k votes. The rule of law for a man who said legal citizens aren't legal citizens becuase they are also immigrants. The rule of law for a man who is endorsed by project 2025. The rule of law for a man who didn't approve FEMA payments for a state that didn't bend the knee.

I don't even know where to start.

Third, we’re facing a mental health and social isolation crisis. Young men are lonelier and struggling with mental health issues at higher rates, partly fueled by social media and the erosion of traditional community institutions (churches, men’s groups, etc.). White men in America are four times more likely to commit suicide than any other group. This is a national crisis, and we’re barely talking about it.

I'd like to see the data on this shit, or at least some cross tabs, because while I buy it might be high, I have a hard time thinking it's higher than trans or gay communities in general.

He's not wrong.  Really, he's not wrong about any of it.  Except...he doesn't get into the "how and why" these things came about.  Here's the rest of the story:

Young white men had it easy in terms of higher education, social dynamics, male roles in society and work, romantic relationships, etc.....because for GENERATIONS (really, all of western history), the deck was stacked IN THEIR FAVOR in all of those respects.

It was easier for Willy Whiteguy to get into a decent university because.....no/few minorities, and no/few women were competing for admission slots.

It was easier to participate in social institutions because they were almost all built for and run/filled with almost exclusively....white men.  The Elks Lodge, fraternities, the local church Board of Elders, all of it....99% white guys.

Nice cushy job in a downtown office, or at a good factory?  Again....much easier to get because they were filled 99% by white guys, no real competition from minorities or women for those jobs.

Romantic relationships?  When women didn't have any real prospects for a safe, stable, secure (including financial security) future without a man to provide for them, men held all the cards.  And again, the highest-value cards (remember the good education and all those good jobs) were held by white guys.  If Pretty Paula wanted a nice house and decent food and a good lifestyle, she needed to marry a Willy Whiteguy, or she was hosed.  Today....Pretty Paula beat out Willy Whiteguy for the latest promotion.  She has a nice townhome, eats well, and has a nice life....she doesn't need Willy Whiteguy for any of that.  Sure, she still might like a sexually compatible companion whose company she finds pleasing, but Whining Willy Whiteguy isn't doing great in that respect -- he sits at home, plays video games, has little ambition, and bitches about the fact that women who look like supermodels (the only women he thinks have any value) won't fuck him, and it must be someone else's fault.

We've failed young men because we haven't pounded into their heads "society isn't just going to hand you this shit anymore, you have to go out there and earn it."  And you're goddamned right I put a lot of that on the heads of loser young men who don't have the ambition or balls to get up out of the gaming chair and improve themselves.  But I also put some of that on the rest of society, because we indeed have failed young men.  When you take away an expected pathway (for all the right reasons -- none of this was to "punish" young white men, but simply to allow everyone else onto the field to compete as well) without offering a well-defined alternative pathway, people end up lost.  Shut down the factory in town where everyone works, without providing an alternative, training for a different field, etc., the former factory workers are 1) fucked and 2) pissed.  Metaphorically, we've done some of that, and we haven't figured out how to equip our young men for the new paradigm.  We really need to do that.

On the bright side, for young men who DO have their shit together, they're in high cotton.  My son has talked about it (and he's already seen guys descend into the Andrew Tate world, bitter and angry, with little educational/professional/romantic success).  He says "look, I'm smart enough, ambitious with a good work ethic, I'm decent looking and know how to dress and not look like a bum, and I can engage with women as equals and not treat them like they should be my property....I'm doing great."  And he is.  I'm sure he'd have done well under the old paradigm as well, but employers still want to hire men.  Women still want male romantic partners.  They just want winners, not losers.  And has his peers fall away and become embittered losers, he looks better and better.

But for all of our sake, that shouldn't be how things go.  His loser peers need to catch up, because society being stuck with a huge clump of underperforming, angry and bitter young men isn't good for anyone.

Scott Galloway did a most excellent podcast that basically hit every single one of those points.  I think this is it and still a great listen.

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/failing-young-men-with-richard-reeves/id1498802610?i=1000584062413

You mentioned that young men need to get their shit together and I'd like to expand on that.  There doesn't seem to much ambition with younger men to get girls.  When we were "utes," literally everything I did was to get laid/get a girl.  Look better, get a car, go to college, make money, etc.  Every single one of those had girls as a component as to the why.  Even college wasn't so much about throwing leg in college.  It was about making more money as an adult, knowing I'd have more options with women.

I see it a lot and I honestly have more in common with young women now.  They want the same things out of life I wanted at that age.  The boys barely want to even drive.

I do think porn is a problem and lord knows I'm not a sexual conservative.  I think the amount and type of porn these young men consumer completely ruins their ability to relate to women.  (Neg away, porn fiends.)

One caveat - as a white male, I'd argue this is still the case. It's still very much a white man's world.

What's been happening is the right has used things like affirmative action and DEI as red herrings to make white men think that they are going to be excluded or replaced, when in reality it's just about leveling a playing field that even with those is heavily tilted in their favor.

So I'm Chinese, but my parents spent quiet some time living in Austria where they learned to love and cook a lot of German/Austrian cuisine. So when we immigrated to Houston for the early part of my life all I knew was German potato salad. I still remembered being shocked going way to summer camp in central Texas and for the first time seeing... mayonnaise in potato salad.

No disagreement.  But still, when for centuries, you've had a 100 yard head start in the race, and now you only have a 50 yard head start....and because you had the 100 yard head start you never bothered to learn to run that fast because you didn't need to, the head start gave you all the advantage you needed....well, loss of a huge advantage into a smaller advantage can feel like a DISadvantage.

Young white men still have every chance to succeed -- they even have built in advantages.  But they have to actually fucking work for it now because there's competition.  We gotta figure out how to get them off their asses to compete.
