Post retirement gigs

Recommended Posts

I’m getting close to the end of my IT career. I could go longer but if I decide to end it I’m thinking about something to do non IT to keep me somewhat busy. Something like 20-30 hours a week at the most so I can golf and do whatever.

I searched but couldn’t find anything. Money and benefits aren’t important.

My ex boss and I always used to joke about being a delivery driver for an auto parts store. I know another guy that worked for one of the railroads who would drive a van and deliver new crews to the train and pickup the crews that had timed out.

Why would you do something non-IT? That’s the least flexible. Just do something else IT related with more flexibility that isn’t what you do now and is more fun?

Work at golf club part time.

Get your bartenders license and work events like ACL.

Crosswalk guard at elementary school.

Start you own consulting business in your field.  Find a way to leverage your IT experience?  Might be tutoring?  That's mostly evenings but plenty of time for golf and daytime activities.

Maybe "Mr. Wrinkles" on OnlyFans.

Volunteer helping young people do something or learn something.  Very rewarding emotionally, and being around younger people keeps you young.

Odd one here, but I know a retired gal that does this and likes it... Hearse Driver for funerals.

But if you are a risk taker the answer is obvious...

Volunteer at a hospital. You wouldn't be cleaning bed pans but more like helping people find their way or other light tasks. Gives you a chance to talk to a wide variety of people.

Best part of volunteering is that you pretty much tell them what your schedule will be. Downside is zero compensation, outside of appreciation lunches, gifts, etc.

Retail is what it is, but Home Depot and Lowes have pretty flexible part time positions.

The ACL bartender thing,  there are several places in Austin that staff festivals, COTA, etc..  Gigs pretty March-October, plus there's the stadium and Moody

School bus driver

Work probably 7-9, 2-430.

Weekends and mid days off. Need a CDL and some endorsements but most drivers these days are retirees

Plus summers off.

I've known people who do/did this solely for the health insurance.

My thoughts exactly. So much of it now you can do anywhere, anytime, for as long or as little you want.  Unless you are just tired or burned out on IT, I'd find an area I always wanted to know more about and just learn/do it.

Knew a girl in hs, her older sister was shamu fat, a really big chick. Anywho, she got a job driving railroad or rig workers, some group of hard up guys. She started by bringing tacos to sell the guys then it escalated to selling blow jobs. Her company had an anti sex in the company van policy, who knew

I run a youth baseball league and we are currently looking for a retired guy to be our maintenance/ground crew for our fields.  We are offering $20/he for 10-15 hours a week.  Something similar maybe available in your area.

She could’ve made some money on our last major construction project. The craft folks were bringing hookers in from Dallas and they were using the project port-a-potties to conduct their business. Apparently it went on a while before the guards caught on.  I don’t think most of those guys would cull anything

Driving cars for car dealers.  My ex FIL used to do this; he would do it 2-3 days a week.  Dealership would have some cars they bought at an auction or they traded it to a different dealer.  They would haul 2-3 guys to the lot, toss them the keys and they would drive it back to the dealership.  He used it as test drive opportunities when he was in the market for a new car or truck.  Cash pay, which was mileage + meal reimbursement.   Sometimes he would deliver multiple cars in a day.

Larger dealers may have a group on staff that already do this, or hire one person with a trailer to haul multiple cars.

Personally, I'm going to do real estate photography.  Low pressure, photos of properties that are going to be listed, work on my own schedule.  I have no interest in shooting subjects.

Greeter at Victoria's Secret/ dressing room boy

That's what i jokingly tell folks my next gig will be.

Wouldn't mind being a parts runner/ courier in a big metro.  Low stress, and I'm reliable as hell.😁

Doordash, $14hr plus 100% tips.

If you are going to drive, do uber and lyft. I have done all 3 of these things. Doordash sucks dick. I drove cars for an auction lot for a bit and it was pretty fun but the pay was shit. Driving for dealers might pay better but it wouldn't be as fun.

Just drive during the day - airport runs, taking people to and from work, etc. Most people are chill, you can make a lot of money and you get to know the city you're in extremely well.

Some people prefer food delivery because they don't have to deal with people but then you have to deal with both restaraunts and customers, and you have to find people's houses/apts, get out, hoof it up the stairs etc. and the pay is worse.

Uber you drive to a spot, someone gets in your car, you drive to another spot, they get out, you move on. It's easy and fairly stress free if you're a good driver and decent people person.

That said: if you don't like driving I wouldn't recommend any of these things. If you don't like people I wouldn't recommend Uber but honestly doing Doordarsh you're going to have to put up with just as much bullshit and likely more.

I've done a decent amount of gig-work and odd-jobs and uber/lyft was by far the best in terms of both pay and experience.

There should be a thread on Uber/Lyft drivers.  Have to be some great stories.  I definitely would have done this in med school if it was an option.

Just a guess but I’m assuming the OP isn’t looking to give blow jobs. Either for free or paid.

Not sure why but I'd like to drive a hotel shuttle bus when I retire. Seems easy and fun, and you only need to memorize the airport terminals and the route to/from the hotel. And there's a good chance the passengers will tip if you're dealing with bags.

I picked up a drone a year ago to start getting familiar with aerial photography.  By the time I want to do this, I'll need to upgrade hardware, but I'll have practice in.  I also received my FAA license for this as well.

Do you like people, or hate people?
I assume you are tired of screens if you don't want to do more IT, but maybe not?
Do you like to make things with your hands?
Do you want to stay near home, or travel around?

Umm. All of the above.

Traveling Craft Fair Woodworker. You'll need a couple of folding tables, a camp chair, a 10 x 10' tent + weights, and some sort of floppy hat.

Also a bunch of stuff you carved.

You'll befriend the other craft fair hippy folk, and as you see familiar faces after several shows, it'll be like joining the circus minus elephant shit.
