Bernie is not concerned about funding. One of his chief advisors is Hank Scorpio, I mean Stephanie Kelton. She’s probably the most vocal advocate of MMT (Modern Monetary Theory) that there is currently. Essentially print money for anything you want. Free college, healthcare, bombs, and on and on.

https://twitter.com/StephanieKelton

He favors raising taxes. None of it is free.

BradInATX raised some good points about why certain taxes would be untenable. If President Bernie gets any pushback on funding it, he’s not really gonna be worried. Just crank that shit up.

I'm sort of lost as to why his plan to fund both M4A and the student debt relief isn't just a straight up tax increase starting at the top 1% and regressing down into the top 5% or so. I'm genuinely curious as to why he has convoluted plans for both of the above that have major issues vs. just taxing the ultra-rich, which seems to have bipartisan support amongst the electorate.

Is the financial transaction tax proposed to fund the debt relief just grandstanding with a "screw Wall Street" type message? I think Bernie is probably smarter than that, but I can't figure out the alternative.

I love how the whole political discourse that surrounds the M4A and student debt relief/Free Tuition totally ignores these simple, basic questions:

Why is American Healthcare so expensive?

Why is College so expensive?

Couldn't folks in the 70's work over the summer to pay for the next semester's tuition?  Why can't you do that now?

i think it's going to end up bringing up the question of "what exactly is democratic socialism, and how does it impact proposed tax plans."  these are questions bernie has answers to, so i'm sure it'll end up being a discussion/topic for future debates.

i do think it's a little misleading (as you earlier stated) to represent that these taxes are only on the uber-rich people/companies.

Thank god the Republicans have arrived to talk some sense into all these Bernie Bros. The sooner the better that they realize nothing is going to be accomplished unless they give up their principled ideals and have some sensible plans while reaching across the aisle. It is good when Republicans, in good faith mind you, give sage advice to the people on the left because then we end up with practical, centrist solutions and not an uber-conservative hell world where immigrants are brutalized, minorities are systemically oppressed, and the elites run rampant and further enrich themselves to unseen heights with no consequence.

I didn’t offer any plans and I’m not reaching across the aisle. I guess you’re referring to BradInATX.

I just offered some background on who is advising Bernie. I think it can give people an idea of how he and his potential administration would address certain issues. Take it or leave it.

Anyone who doesn't march in lock step with Bernie is a Republican, ergo he's talking to you, me, and a ton of other people on this thread.

Because the way to win elections is to group anyone who isn't in the 10% of the electorate who is a 100% Bernie Bro into the same category. Despite the fact that you and I are on completely different areas of the political spectrum, you and I are the same.

It's dumb, counter-productive, and it's why the Bernie Bros get the reputation they do. I won't be one of them, but if Bernie wins the nomination, there will be voters that will say "well, if I'm basically a Republican, f you, I'll go ahead and vote for one". And if/when that happens, of course the Bernie Bros, kings of introspection and reality, will recognize their mistakes and won't blame the DNC, the system, the electoral college, or Hillary.

They are so similar to rabid Trump voters that it's frightening. Look at Hank Scorpio or bad_teammate throughout this thread. It's straw men, purity tests, exaggerations, personal attacks (and of course indignation when they are attacked), snark, memes, and a complete lack of tolerance for other views. Attempts at substantive debate get shouted down ("Centrists! Shitlibs!") in the same way that Trump voters think scientists are nerds. Bernie is fine. His supporters, at least the "very vocal very online" ones are absolute garbage cans. The Russians don't even need their bots to sow discord in the Democrat base - the Bernie crowd is doing the heavy lifting for them.

The biggest thinkyface in the world.

Yes yes, you've nailed it.

I am allergic to substantive policy discussion.

You do well at policy discussion when people stay in general agreement with you and your god emperor. I'll give you that.

When not, well, you know. As does everyone else on the board.

FYI - I have a bunch of questions re:Bernie's FTT bill upthread that you never bothered responding to. Given that you respond to every post on this thread (sometimes multiple times), that's interesting.

I'm not sure what you mean by "do well", but to argue that I don't talk policy is just a stupid lie. I love Bernie and I'm partisan and I have strong beliefs, but you're just lying about my focus on substance because you've got hurt feelings.

I will be honest, your dishonesty and inability to make even a cursory effort to read or research makes it difficult to want to expend the effort, but please repost any question you feel I am avoiding like a coward.

My dishonesty.

Lmao.

Just a stunning lack of self awareness. My questions are up thread a few pages. I'll wait. I imagine you'll need some time to figure out new ways to call me names and avoid addressing the issues.

Lol. These stupid, spoiled Millenials! Why, when I was growing up, we had to work and slave to graduate high school before could land a union job with lifetime security, retirement pension, and ability to raise a family on a single income, or a private sector job with compensation competive with union jobs. Then as we got older and had to deal with skyrocketing drug prices, we voted for an expansion of socialized medicine, a concept we oppose when it comes to anyone else receiving it, that didn't even bother to pretend to have a funding mechanism. These young ones need wake up and smell the java!

Hi financial genius, how much did the recent tax cut bill cost for Americans? Over $1 trillion?

Your attempt at sarcasm is unintentionally more accurate than not. In the New Deal Overton Window, when there were higher levels of socialism in our hybrid capitalism-socialism economy, higher education was more affordable for the average American. In the Reagan Revolution Overton Window in which the levels of capitalism were increased, higher education became less affordable for the average American. Of course there's more variables than just that, and soon it will be a moot point, but across a range of issues that affect the average American's standard of living and ability to get ahead, a pretty clear pattern emerges.

This was NOT a Bernie-friendly audience, so I wouldn't read too much into it with regard to wider support among black voters. This crowd is professional-class women, which is a group of people who were not Bernie fans in 2016 and is the demographic that makes up a very powerful part of the #NeverBernie social media brigade.

His history is a strength, but it was stupid of him to be so blatant about referencing it in front of an unfriendly audience. Even though what he's saying is 100% true, he should do a better job of knowing that that it wouldn't land with that audience.

But that's just me criticizing his politician skills, which aren't really that important to me.

If he continues to propose strong and progressive policies to help the black community, then I think he'll do just fine.

Bernie's campaign is trying to find a way to mend the disconnect between him and the old ass black bitches demographic.  His first step will be inserting a long "mmmm hmmm" into multiple portions of his speeches while moving his head side to side to the "mmmm hmmm" rhythm.  Somehow the burden of straddling the fine line of reaching out and patronizing has become Bernie's alone.  When asked about this aspect of his campaign, Sanders dodged the question by dramatically throwing his head back, rolling his eyes and saying "child please."

Bad answer, Berno.

He's terrible at reading rooms.

I thought that was a perfectly rational answer.  Joy Reid primed that room before a response was ever given.  There was no adequate answer from the Caucasian person with a penis guy.  Beto's answer came off just as awkward because Reid conducted the entire panel like the Maury Povich Show, introducing the abusive step mom and then pretending like she wanted to have a valid conversation when the room was already trained who deserved their ire.  This kind of shit is absurd and totally counter productive to the Democratic Party.  The entire format was a spectacle where Joy Reid could pretend like she was actually someone meaningful like Shirley Chisholm.

Reverend Al Sharpton hijacked a town hall by having each candidate come up one by one to answer whether or not they'd support slavery reparations, because wage disparity and limited power distribution and access to medical care wouldn't be as sexy of a media snippet.

Saturday Sharpton will host an event called 'Not Just Black and White -- Race and the 2020 Election.'  MSNBC needs to fuck off.  If you want to have a viable discussion about race and power instead of a baited donkey show do it with real people like Cornel West or Tavis Smiley or Ciara Taylor and watch intelligent shit unfold.  This self righteous bullshit is nothing more than these people seeking to expand their celebrity profile and brand themselves.
